It's always fun to see people realize that the Hunger Games films are actually fantastic, instead of mediocre/childish like they assumed. It's funny to think about: The Hunger Games books/movies were so good and popular that they spawned a ton of mediocre knockoff books/movies in the "dystopian YA" genre, and so now years later lots of people automatically assume the Hungers Games will be just as mediocre as all the imitators it inspired. :)

@@MamadNobari i think the first 2 make better movies but the last one is a great story that doesn’t translate as well to a movie. A big part of the reason why is that this isn’t a series about an oppressive government and a revolution, it’s a series about a girl who was placed in that and forced to be in the center of it all. The end of the revolution and much of the fight isn’t shown on screen which made the ending seem anti-climactic but in the book it made sense because it is all told through katniss’s perspective and that’s not part of her story. So much of the third book mirrors the first in such a perfect way that may not be as noticeable on a first read but makes it so interesting and enjoyable for a fan. So yes it should’ve been one movie but it still wouldn’t live up to the excitement of the second movie I think. As a major Hunger Games fan I’m glad they didn’t sacrifice the true story for a more exciting movie even if it would’ve been more fun to watch. idk that’s just my opinion

I always say this, but one thing to keep in mind about Haymitch is that, as a mentor, he’s seen tributes come and go and they always die. It’s bound to take a toll on him, which explains why he wasn’t that keen on getting close to Katniss and Peeta until it seemed that they actually had a chance.

With regards to how many times each name appears in the reaping, at 12, your name is usually in there once. Every year, 1 more is added (2 at 13, 3 at 14, etc) all up to 7 times at 18. But there’s also another system, especially targeting the poor. You can exchange having your name in more time for extra food (from what I remember, 1 additional name in exchange for 1 years worth of grain for 1 person in your household). That’s why Gale’s name is in there so many times (because he has a lot of younger siblings). It’s pretty much illustrating the way the poorer people in society is at a disadvantage. That’s also why it’s so shocking that Prim’s name is called, because she’s only 12, and Katniss has not allowed her to exchange her name for food (Katniss does so herself rather than letting her sister do it), so her name is only in there once.
@NinjaDog251

The districts aren't supposed to train their tributes, but Districts 1 and 2 are wealthier districts and send potential tributes to special academies. (The Capital turns a blind eye to this because Districts 1 and 2 are where they get most of their Peacekeepers). During the reaping, these specially trained children volunteer in place of the randomly selected tribute. That is why they are known as "careers". It's also why the kids from District 1 and 2 tend to be bigger, stronger, more skilled, and win most often. On the other hand, it's really unusual for kids in the outlying districts to volunteer, which is why Katniss makes such a stir, as she was the first volunteer ever from District 12.

At the beginning of the Games ceremony, when all the tributes ride in, they aren't just wearing pretty clothes in general. Their outfits have to represent their district. Each district, based on where it's located, produces their own material. So district one is luxury, district 4 is lumber, district 11 is agriculture, and district 12 is coal. District 12 is almost looked down on by the other districts. The fact that Katniss and Peeta rode in with their outfits literally on fire was a big deal. They weren't there to just fade into the background, district 12 was going to mean something for once.

But that was so easy for Peeta to do cuz he didn’t have to play it up. And then to calm Katniss down after the interview he said he was just pretending. But as the movie goes on you can tell that Peeta isn’t pretending at all. Thats why he says “I dont want to forget”. Katniss is pretending at first. 1. Only later you realize Haymitch is no useless as all. He's traumatized is why he's constantly drunk, but also, him playing the indifferent at the beginning is also to test and to see if they have any actual fight in them. It is where, I believe, he recognized Katniss' potential. 2. Peeta's insistance of having no chance of winning also served double purpose. First because he didn't actually believe he did have a chance, and second, he wanted to make sure Katniss worries about herself alone and if she actually thinks he stands a chance, it would possible 'take her of her game', in his view.

also to explain the start (2:30) Gale put his name in more than once to get more food for his family, which is something you can do in these poorer districts. Great reaction and some great observations. The reason Katniss missed the first shot during her "exam" was due to the fact that she had only ever been using her own, homemade bows. This new bow was very different in the way it handled and fired the arrows. In the book it took Katniss several attempts to completely master it, but by that time, the game makers had lost all interest in her performance, leading her to shooting the arrow at the apple in frustration. They should really have explained this in the movie. Even a quick line, like "I have only used my own bows" would have done the trick.

The reason Haymitch is so cynical and unpleasant is that ever since he's won the 50th Hunger Games, he's seen 26 teenagers from his district die while being unable to do anything about it. He has been forced to mentor them because normally, a female mentor from each district mentors female tributes and the same with males, but here Haymitch is the only living victor from 12, so he has to mentor both tributes and can never catch a break during the several weeks each game lasts, because he is the only one who can get sponsors. Katniss missed the first time in front of the judges because the bow was more tense than the one she was used to. Later Games usually last like fifteen days, but the first lasted few days if not mere hours (they took place in a decrepit arena before the Games moved to entire new places across the country/planet from the 11th Games on).

About the flames on the dress: In the books they specified that it doesn't actually burn, but the stones that have been sown into the dress will sparkle when she twirls and make it look like it's on fire. And Rue thinking of the singing thing so that the birds would repeat it is because she grew up in District 11 which is the agriculture district. Rue helped on the orchards from an early age which made her adapt in climbing trees and jumping between them, even on very thin branches. Because she was able to climb so well, she was able to see the flag which signified it was quitting time more easily and used that 4-note tune to notify everyone else in the orchard of it as well which was then repeated throughout it by the Mockingbirds. Then some other details you did not question, but explain a few things: Generally, the higher the number of the district, the poorer it is. 12 is the poorest, 1 is the whealthiest apart from the Capitol. That is why in especially the first 2 ditricts, becoming a Tribute is not a death sentence... it is an honor. Children actually train to become a tribute and to potentially win the games. Every year at the reaping it's about who can volunteer first and go to the Hunger Games in these districts. 12 always has the worst chances because they have no training at all. They are the mining district and are only sent into the mines from 18 on so they don't have any experience at all from it that could help. The "animal hybrids" also have something special about them in the books. The playmakers gave them the exact same eyes as the fallen tributes. One dog for every tribute that has fallen.

The 3 fingers is a tribute to sacrifice and hope basically. It’s their sign of defiance and care. But it’s mainly from district 12, and the rest adopted it as a sign of rebellion because of her.

10:54 it explains in the books kind of that she misses in the training grounds because back at home her own bow was made by herself with things she'd either managed to find/trade to buy in her district. So it was no where near as modern/well made, and also her own bow she'd had for years, and used almost every single day if not every day. So she wasn't used to the tension of the string with the bow made by the capital, which threw off her shot. Which is why she was able to aim perfectly the second time after realising the string was a lot tighter, and she would've had to pull back a lot more to create force with it. Hard to pick up in the movies. 14:55 in the books it also explains that the people who dress the tributes (I've forgotten the term for them) have their outfits that the tributes wear into the arena overlooked by game makers and such. The tributes are allowed to bring into the games 1 token from their district as a symbol of home but they are scruitinzed carefully. One of the other tributes from the career pack (districts 1 and 2) brought a ring that, when the gem was turned, revealed a small dart tipped with poison. Nightlock poison. From the same berries they use at the end. So it was a struggle for katniss to be allowed a pin into the games as it was argued back and forth that she could possibly use it as a weapon to stab, obviously not major wounds to the abdomen and such, but to stab someone in the eyes with it to blind them for example. So that's why cinna shushes her when he revealed it. I can't remember if he snuck it in for her, or if it was just a conflict on whether or not it was dangerous for her to keep. 🤷‍♀️ The movies do amazingly, but there are a lot of really insane, small details that they have to omit due to the time limit. Shame 🤙😂

This set of movies makes me think about that phrase quoted on Arrival; "In war there are no winners, only widows". The only way to not loose is to not fight The Other, and the only way to do that is to not see an Other, but to realize we're all One, the same ("there is no spoon"). Which imo, is what Asimov meant with his 3 Laws always failing, the only way humanity won't "loose" to the future IA/robots is if we include them as a part of Us, if we don't think we have a reason to fight them at all.

the reason why it is called Hunger Games is because you can trade better portions of rations for putting your name in an extra time. The more times you collect extra rations the more times your name is in the bowl. You want your family to actual eat for a change? put your name in and come home with actual food to eat for a change, try not to think about what it might cost down the road.

In the books it's mentioned that the Hunger Games last until there's a victor. They don't stop, so there's years where people die fast (the book mentions one taking place in an arena with a lot of traps and another in a frozen wasteland) which is considered a disappointment, and there are years when it takes weeks and weeks. But as you saw, they manipulate the arena to force the tributes together. In the book they dry up the water, so all the tributes HAVE to go to the one remaining water source. That way they'll have to fight. Katniss missed the first arrow because she wasn't used to the bow. Her own bow is wood, this one is metal. She had to adjust to the tension of the string etc. Katniss herself isn't quite sure if she likes Peeta or not, because she may have fallen for him, maybe, though in the books she is pretty reluctant to have kids, she would have to let them be in the reapings, but they're in the games so she doesn't really have a chance to really think about who she likes, because she is forced to play the part. When Ceasar Flickerman shouts during their final interviwe at around 29.51 you can just see Katniss plaster on her smile for the audience.

These films are always such traumatising experiences to watch. Also what you shouldn't forget, the hunger games are a reality TV show, a brutal and fucked up one, but a reality show nontheless. So there will always be a lot of hype around it in the capitol, the tributes trying to get people into likeing them, helping them, to turn the odds in their favours in order to survive.

People say the Mockingjay pin didn't work, but actually, it did. It made it so Katniss volunteered for Prim so she was saved. It made Rue trust Katniss (in the book) and all that spiraled from Rue's death (the fact that 'both could win if from the same district', Thresh letting her live) and it brought Katniss back home. So ... how did it not work, I wonder? ;)

I don't know if you want book details... but here's some. In the books to make sure people wouldn't think Katniss had something with Gal, they told the Capitol that Gal was Katniss' cousin (not true) And in the books Katniss and Peta actually eat the berries before their victory is announced and they barely spit them out time. Finally Peta actually loses his leg in the books. It's like the biggest thing they skip out. But to answer a question you actually asked. The three finger in the air thing isn't really explained much in the books, but it is an old District 12 tradition that basically shows great respect and honor

You should definitely read the books, the movies are pretty loyal adaptations but the books have so much more detail, lore, world-building and context. I love the shaky handheld cam effect in this movie as well as some other things like ringing ear sounds, blurry vision effect etc - it makes you feel like you're right there in the action and that adds to the thrill feeling of the movie. Similarly, the book is written in first person present tense (unlike the most common third person past tense) so when you're reading it, rather than it being events that have happened to her in the past it feels like events are happening to me right now - it has a similar "thrilling" effect I find. One thing I find the movies don't properly capture for me that the book is much better at is how all-knowing and all-powerful and all-controlling the Capitol is and the lengths they go to keep people in line. The three finger salute is described by book Katniss as "an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love". So originally it was just a District 12 thing but it spread to the other Districts through the television. In real life the symbol has been adopted by a bunch of countries' people as a pro-democracy/anti-tyranny symbol, particularly in Asia. Will Katniss and/or Peeta go back in? The rules say that once you win you basically become rich and you can live out your days in comfort. Your new job becomes like a face of the Games for the Capitol and also to mentor future tributes like Haymitch did.
