THE LAST DRAGON MOVIE REVIEW | 36:20 - 37:50
The Last Dragon Movie Description:
Leroy Green (Taimak), a young martial artist living in New York City, trains tirelessly to attain the same level of mastery as the great Bruce Lee. One night, his life changes forever when he rescues television personality Laura Charles (Vanity) from evil businessman Eddie Arkadian (Chris Murney). Impressed by Leroy's bravery, Laura falls for Leroy -- but to keep her safe, he will have to defeat a gang leader named Sho'nuff (Julius J. Carry III), the self-styled Shogun of Harlem.
The Last Dragon (sometimes listed as Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon) is a 1985 American martial arts comedy film produced by Rupert Hitzig for Berry Gordy and directed by Michael Schultz. The film stars Taimak, Vanity, Julius Carry, Christopher Murney, Keshia Knight Pulliam, and Faith Prince. Choreography was created by Lester Wilson and Lawrence Leritz.
The Last Dragon was released in theatres by TriStar Pictures on March 22, 1985. The film was a financial success despite a mixed reception by critics, and is considered a cult classic.

That "little boy" is Ernie Reyes Jr, a professional fighter, actor, and stuntman. He was trained by his father, who did a lot of stunt coordination for 80s and 90s martial arts movies. You might recognize him once he grows up a bit from the movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle II, Surf Ninjas, and as the guy who beats up The Rock in "The Rundown." My favorite movie of his though is in the Arnold Schwarzenegger sleeper, "Red Sonja." It's almost as cheesy as this movie is. Which is why we kids of the 80s love it so much.

The reason why I loved this as a kid was because back in the day all the movies came from Hollywood and more or less the same studios, so to have a movie released in theaters that came from Black filmmakers, and a legend like Barry Gordy was amazing. So I think a lot of us love the movie partly for that reason. Black or Latino produced films just weren't happening on a large scale in those days. Also you have to look at this in the context of the 80s. The 80s were silly, fun, excessive and in fact the 80's were the epitome of "too much". I hope that helps understand why we love this, even though we know it's corny in parts, the acting is not good and the story is lacking. It was like something for us, in the neighborhoods and we ate it up.

Yeah, of course the music in this movie is gonna be awesome. In addition to it being the 1980s, this was also affiliated with Motown, a major record label. The Executive producer, Berry Gordy was the head of Motown Records. Incidentally, he is also the father and grandfather of the 2 members of LMFAO, which is probably part of the reason for the line from Sexy and I Know It where he says "and like Bruce Leroy, I got The Glow, yo!"

"The Last Dragon" was a cult movie when it was still in theaters. It was meant to be a combination parody/homage to Blaxploitation movies, Kung Fu movies and movie musicals and was directed by Michael Shultz ("Car Wash" "Cooley High), one of the few black film directors at the time.. It was supposed to be like a live action cartoon, that is why many of the performances were so over the top. It is still fun to watch almost forty years later. BTW, you can't be serious with the Berry Gordy comment, lol.

A year late, but I appreciate the honest reaction Mel! I’m a Gen-X old head and I love this movie unapologetically. Let me give some 80’s context: This movie was before Denzel Washington. Before Wesley Snipes. Way before Will Smith, and obvi b4 MJB and Black Panther. 1 year before this movie we finally got an Eddie Murphy movie where he was the lead, Beverly Hills Cop. Which paved the way. For us black gen-x kids this movie was a revelation. Black hero, mostly black cast, set in the black part of NY, and he gets the black girl in the end. It was everything we wanted and more . It’s why we love it so much.

Ok if you haven't looked it up yet Berry Gordie was the founder and owner of Motown so yeah I think at 1 point he employed Quincy Jones. The little Asian kid that kicked ass was/is Ernie Reyes Jr. - his father Ernie Reyes Sr. not only a great martial artist himself he was also a student of Bruce Lee and if I remember correctly the martial arts coordinator for the movie and played one of the guys the kid beat up in the group fight scene. For me I can never get enough of this movie even when it first came out people saw it as corney but we grew up on early Kungfu movies plus the evolution of it threw Bruce Lee. This movie is an urban take on those early movies a heroes journey if you will. Glad you enjoyed it - it is pure entertainment and a bit of philosophy about how to use the power you have and what ill use of it can look like.

Ernie Reyes Sr was not a student of bruce lee, i do not know where you heard this but its not true he started martial arts in 1966 with Tang Soo Do, he tahn studied Tae Kwon Do, by the early 70s he studied other arts such as boxing, kickboxing Escrima, knife and u Shu. but he never once learnt Jeet Kune Do or studied or even met Bruce Lee

Thanks for doing this movie and I think you’re spot on with your assessment. As a kid I loved this movie because it was corny, had some cool martial arts scenes, and a simple but inspiring message. Basically it’s a live action cartoon. As an adult I love this movie for being an immaculate time capsule of the eighties. One of the two formative decades of my life and I truly appreciated getting to revisit a little piece of that from your perspective.

I agree with your opinion of the movie. It was meant to be funny, corny,(in a good way), over the top Saturday morning cartoon type of entertainment. That was the appeal.

Did he seriously just ask who Berry Gordy is? 😑 His parents have failed him. Lol Berry is Motown. He is the man that put black R&B and black pop on the map, once black people were allowed to own their own entertainment businesses in the 60's. He gave the world the look and sound that non black people around the world would look up to and copy. The Motown sound, the polished look, the choreography dance moves...he put us on the map and they stayed hungry for more. Acts like: The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Jackson 5/The Jacksons, Stevie Wonder, The Marvelettes and many other talents.

That little dude with all the moves at the end was martial arts champion Ernie Reyes Jr. His dad was a stuntman, and at that age Ernie Jr. was also in Red Sonja and starred in his own tv show, Sidekicks. As a teen he was in Surf Ninjas and the first 2 Ninja Turtles movies. He's worked on a ton of stuff over the years as a stunt coordinator, too. Sadly, he had to retire from martial arts a few years ago due to kidney failure.

The problem with movies in general is starting in the 90s movies stopped being made for fun. Anything considered "fun" had to be a comedy. This is why, and not the 10,000 other reasons people would say, a movie like this can't be made today. The people who made this thought to themselves "Let's make a 70s Blackspliotaion film but set in the 80s, Kung-Fu, MTV Culture, Fairytale set in 1980s New York filled with as many one-liners as a Schwarzenegger film!" And then made it. No one short of Quentin Tarantino even thinks about movies like that. People take movie making WAY too seriously now. You can criticize the acting, the effects, and so on, but this movie has something even many of the top grossing, technical masterpiece films lack: Soul.

I've seen this movie a thousand times when I was a kid in the late 80s. Now I'm grown & yea it is corny but it was epic & iconic. Why? Bc it was the 80s & it was mixed in with Kung fu & black culture & among others, thx to Berry Gordy & the rest of the cast members. It was just that simple, it was the 80s.😎 Btw, some of the cast members like Sho-Nuff, LeRoy's younger brother, & Vainty were sadly passed away, so that's a dedication to them. ❤🙏🏽

The training montage in the intro was done as a homage to the Asian Kung-Fu movies of the 70s & 80s. A lot of those movies started like that. This was just done in a hipper, more urban way.

This movie is just great kung fu cheese. Taimak, the guy playing Leroy...was not a very good actor when he was cast in this. But they thought his awkwardness delivering his lines made him come across as more innocent and socially awkward. Sho Nuff was played by Julius Carry III. He helped Taimak with his acting, and got help with the martial arts in return. He was also in a TV series with Bruce Campbell called 'Brisco County Jr'. By the way, that little kid is Ernie Reyes Jr. He was in Surf Ninjas, Ninja Turtles II, and The Rundown (he played the guy The Rock fought on the vines.) His dad, Ernie Reyes Sr, was the goon in military fatigues. The one he did the flip with.

Great reaction! Totally get feeling some parts were corny especially since you didn't grow up with the film. But i think thats also part of its charm- the 80s fun and cheese factor! Also, Berry gordy is the founder of Motown which gave us Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and the Supremes and The Temptations to name a few. He is the most legendary music mogul in the business.
