I remember the day I went to see this in the cinema. We had planned to go and watch Natural Born Killers but that got cancelled. So, since we were at a cinema complex miles from town, we picked a random movie. All the seats were booked except for 3 at the front, so we had no choice but those ones. I remember I got neck cramp cause my head was jammed so far back to get the screen in view. This meant I couldn't see the sides and had no reference for perspective, so when they flew through the screen it really felt like it was happening. There was no advertising for the movie at all so they just relied on word of mouth. I've never seen a trailer for The Matrix though they might have later made one to sell DVDs.

I remember the "What is the Matrix" promo everywhere. It also seemed like people weren't total troll tossers back then. They asked for $36M for the production and he studio green lit them for $16M. They spent the entire $16M on the Trinity opening Scene (on the "Dark City" movie Set). Then showed it to the studio, who immediately gave them the rest of their requested budget.

Worth remembering that Keanu was recovering from a bike accident during the making of this and was wearing a neck brace while training and filming - and yet, his performance totally sells it. By the time of the sequels and he'd had time to heal, he was able to do a lot more wire gags and stunts and such on that basis.

I really wish Seb hadn't been spoiled about The Matrix before seeing the movie. True, it's hard not to be spoiled by a 20+ year old film in this day and age, but this is one of those movies where the twist is so surprising that the genuine first-time reactions are the most entertaining. This movie blew a lot of people's minds. I didn't even see it until I was at a friend's house a year or two after its release. When Morpheus holds up the Durecell battery, the twist hit me like a ton of bricks.

The choice of red and blue pill was always kind of terrifying to me, one is bliss in ignorance while the other is misery with knowledge. You have the choice to be happy and all it will cost you is not knowing, but then again you wouldn’t know. My choice would likely be the worst, red pill purely out of curiosity and then a lot of regret. Most people came out this movie like “hell yeah I’m the Neo of my story, everyone else might be a soulless construct living in ignorance but not me”, me on the other hand came out this movie thinking “Bro if this whole thing was real I’d be Cipher” living whole “real” life full of regret for not taking the blue pill

Loved your reaction ! But before reacting to matrix 2 reloaded, you really MUST react to the animatrix (or watch on your own if you really can't). These are 9 shorts stories on the matrix universe who helps to understand it and to elarge the universe and the lore. Actually there are only 4 of the 9 that really matters to better understand the matrix sequels : -The second Renaissance : It's a matrix prequel which tells what happened between humans and machines and why the matrix was created -A kid's story : Origin story of a new character in matrix 2 & 3 -Last flight of the Osiris : It's an introduction to matrix reloaded, litterally a couple of hours before. Btw, and unfortunetly, Tank (the operator) won't be on matrix 2 & 3 because the actor had schedules issues. And you have to be aware that for matrix 2 & 3 : They dreamt big and had a lot of ambition. They propel the matrix franchise to be a franchise like star wars & lord of the rings, to tell an epic tale. Actually, it was one of the three biggest trilogy of the early 2000's with lord of the rings and the star wars prequels. Besides, I would say that matrix reloaded is my favorite in the saga (expect as a stand-alone movie, then the first one wins ^^). Btw, matrix 2 (reloaded) and matrix 3 (revolutions) are actually a 4 hours film cut in two parts (they were shot back to back) and this is why they were both released the same year with only a 6 months gap. A little bit like the lord of the rings wich were shot back to back as well. Can't wait to see your reactions to the matrix sequels (and perhaps animatrix) :)

This film was not only revolutionary with the special effects back then, but also because there are so many hidden small details that make sense in the whole. Like you realize you are in a simulation just by paying attention to the reflection in the sunglasses. When Morpheus offers the pills, you see one hand with the red pill reflected in one eye, the other hand with the blue pill reflected in the other eye. This is not how reflections work in real world, normally you would see both hands at different angles reflected in each side of the sunglasses. The green hue you also noticed. Everything was spectacular, from the clothing to the general atmosphere. The story could be a little bit cheesy but it was groundbreaking in a time when Windows OS existed just for a few years, the internet was becoming more available to the general public but was still not so easy to have (most of us were still on dial-up back then). Smart phones were not invented, social media did not exist, but technology was advancing by leaps and bounds every year, which raised all these concerns about VR and AI, it was the hottest topic. After you finish the series, I can recommend you to watch another SciFi movie with Keanu that was released before the Matrix - Johnny Mnemonic.

Compared to the Films that it's supposed to be expanding upon its absolutely dismal. Making it extra meta doesn't make it good. Also the fight sequences and special effects were a massive step backwards in comparison to its predecessors. Nothing original, groundbreaking nor revolutionary. It's a joke.

You should read about the directors and their vision for this film. It was directed by two trans women (sisters) while they were still presenting as male. They have since come out saying that the film is a trans allegory - Knowing that something is wrong with the world, like a splinter in your mind. Switch was also supposed to be male in the real world and a woman in the matrix but the studio didn't allow them to do it. Theres lots of examples esp with Neo and I highly recommend reading about it. This has always been my fave film and I love it even more now being LGBTQ myself. Of course, its still a brilliant film without all that deeper meaning. So glad you got round to watching it :)

Neo Wasn't the one through most of the film. Remember what the Oracle said, that he might be waiting for his next life. That was a hint, she knows everything that is going to happen, she knew he needed to die to come back as the one. You should watch Reloaded and Revolutions, I don't care what anyone says, they are fantastic films, not as good as the original but still bloody amazing.

I was taking philosophy at the time. We were literally going over Socrates "cave analogy" and I just saw this movie in theaters. I pointed it out in class and the professor was so excited that something so popular and topical was obviously directly taken from ancient philosophy. For those that don't know, the cave analogy is based on the idea of everyone being chained up in a cave with only a view of a curtain with shadows cast from a fire and people on the other side. The people would make their own world view, theories, and belief system based on this. If someone broke free, left and saw the actual world, stars in the sky, nature, etc and came back to explain to people that their tiny scope of the world based on the limited things they saw/experienced in the cave was not reality, they would be attacked and likely killed. Similar to people not ready to be unplugged from the matrix and the lie those still in the matrix had accepted as their reality.

32:00 It took me a few watches but I realized that she rezed him because the ORICLE herself told her that the man she would fall in love with in the future was "The one" as in "The one" in the prophecy Morphious was talking about. Through out the whole movie she's seen hoping and investigating Neo to see if he is the one she was prophesized to fall for and In that moment she MADE Neo the one. She fulfilled her prophecy and Neos in a weird way and I think the build up of that scene in general from those setups was so cathartic.

It's interesting, the script for Matrix 1999 had Switch being one gender in the real world and another inside the matrix. This part of the script never made it into the final cut of the film but all these years later, that piece of writing makes so much sense

I watched this on a boot leg VHS tape whilst stoned out of my mind with a load of friends really late at night and I had exams the next day... It was, absolutely fucking amazing. Late 90's, in some random living room, weed smoke thick in the air everyone watching with their jaw on the floor, we'd seen nothing even close to what this was.

@@bloodyneptune ..said the avatar in her own video game lol 😜 But for real, I don't think it's like the movie portrays, but I could discuss this topic for days. Sort of a spiritual matrix of matter itself. With our spirit playing the game of life, where we play video games of characters playing video games..where people want to upload their brains to computers to go even deeper into a vitual game. Crazy. Video game characters are unaware of the level above them yet steered by them. I believe our soul or spirit is doing that with us and our brain is the hardware, beliefs and ideas are the software, and this 3d reality is the operating system

There's a deleted scene (I don't know if it was actually filmed or just deleted from the script) where Neo is talking to Cypher at the console (where he offers Neo the alcohol substitute) and we find out why he hates Morphius and why he wants to leave the real world: Apparently Neo is the 5th or 6th subject that Morphius has claimed to be "the one" and Cypher has lost faith in him for that reason. Probably a good idea that it was removed from the final product because it would cast Morphius in a not so good light.

As cliche and goofy as the "love's first kiss" trope is, it actually makes a bit of sense. Feeling her kiss on the outside, he realizes what is in the Matrix isn't real. It's one thing to 'know' it, something else to really KNOW it. He's not been shot, because there are no bullets. Him looking around and seeing the code, he sees that world for what it is, code. Jumping inside of Smith works because neither he, nor Smith, are actually there.
