I love this movie - it’s so clever in the way its shot from the perspective of the ghost. Some really cool things to pick up the second time watching, after you know the twist; 1. The mother suffers migraines because she shot herself in the head 2. Anne’s hyperventilated breathing is because she was smothered with a pillow. Even the part where the mother says “stop breathing.” 3. I believe the scene where you questioned if Anne was sleeping, she was actually dead and the mother was having a memory of apologising after she killed her children 4. A give away that the servants are dead also, is that they’re not wearing clothes of the era. The movie was set in the 1940’s, but their clothes are from around the late 1800’s 5. The father reacts so strangely, because he knows he is dead from the war - he doesn’t know that his wife shot herself and killed her children while he was away, so he is shocked that he is able to communicate with them/that they’re dead. 6. The fog/haze throughout the movie clears when they realise they’re ghosts

she kept having the headaches cause she shot herself in the head - and the kids didn't react to the light cause they were dead. I sure as hell didn't know they were dead lol.

They were photosensitive (sensitive to light). The mother was alone with them during the occupation and it all everything got to be too much for her. Photogenic means you look good in photographs. Some people are said to look better in photographs than in person. Yes, Michelle Fairley. Looking out for her kid, yet again.

This movie sets up all the haunted house tropes, then turns everything on its head when we realize who the real ghosts are! It's an exceptional movie.

Yes, that is the actress who plays Catelyn Stark! She also played Mrs. Granger in the Harry Potter movie where Hermione wiped her parents’ memories of her to protect them!

The Island of Jersey in the English Channel was one of 4 English Islands occupied by the Nazis during WWII. So when Nichole Kidman's character said she kept Nazis out of her home for 5 years she literally means that, somehow she kept Nazis out of the house. We can only imagine how she might have done that.
@55tranquility9 ай бұрын
Yes the Nazis did occupy Jersey, the Nazis expected a quick defeat of mainland Britain and Hitler actually wanted to ally with Britain to begin with until Britain and Churchill put pay to that idea. So the occupying Nazis had a moderate approach (to non Jewish population) Island leaders maintained some authority, independence, and autonomy from the German occupiers and armed resistance was practically non existent and many islanders were employed by the nazis. This is what her husband is reffering to when he says 'like everyone else'. To be fair, Jersey and the other Channel Islands were demilitarised by Britain, the British government decided that the Channel Islands were of no strategic importance and would not be defended declaring them an 'open island'. Life under occupation was dull and hard, but civilians mainly were able to keep apart from the Germans. Later life got harder particularly when the Germans confiscated radios - the islanders treading a difficult line between cooperating but not collaborating. In the final years life got very hard, this island was nearly at the point of starvation both civilians and occupying forces, fuel, and medicines became scarce. In May 1945 the Germans unconditionally surrendered, and was entirely peaceful. Of course some civilians fraternised with the occupiers and women who had affairs with Germans were called 'Jerry-Bags' in fact after liberation allied troops had to put some women under protection because of the threat of reprisals.

Mrs Mills: "I'm at the end of my tether" means "I'm at the end of my rope" means "I'm at the end of my patience." They'd come because a living family had moved into the house; but because Grace had placed a ghostly advertisement for servants in the post, that's who she assumed they were, & the trio decided to humor her...for a time. Until Mrs Mills ran out of patience. My head canon about the dad is that he'd died wanting desperately to get home...& finally got there. Only to be perplexed & horrified the wife & children whom he'd expected to be alive & grieving were able to interact with him! Then his daughter Anne shared her childish understanding of the day her mother "went mad" (smothered them, then shot herself); & he was so horrified he had to leave. He's back at war, against German ghosts, on a haunted battlefield.

8:58 To beg the Virgin for forgiveness, means the Virgin Mary, to whom children would pray since the Virgin Mary is the catholic motherly figure. It is like saying 'oh you don't want to say sorry to me? Then you better pray'.

Just FYI; "photosensitive" is just a scientific term that refers to sensitivity to light and the "photo" part refers to light, not photography. I know, it's just another weird part of the English language. And, sure, everyone in the movie is technically on camera because they're all actors playing parts. Within the fictional world where the story takes place, the cameras weren't there; we're just getting to peek into that world. In the real world, the cameras were there, but the children were just acting that they had photosensitivity, they didn't really have it. Maybe you're thinking of other stories where ghosts can't be photographed? But technically, no one ever attempted to photograph the children in the movie (not counting the movie cameras that did not exist in their fictional world).

I wonder how the supplies work in limbo. Do the cabinets refill with food every day? Can they run out of toilet paper? lol

They would've run out eventually. When the dead servants arrived the house, the previous servants disppeared only a week earlier, so they still had food and supplies.
