Well deserved indeed. It’s also one of the rare films in history that took home the “major five” academy awards: best actress, best actor, best screenplay, best director, and best film. Simply phenomenal horror film that’s also not supernatural at all, yet the characters within it feel like Hannibal and Buffalo Bill are terrifying monsters.

Hannibal looking at the camera was a purposeful choice by the director. Along with Hopkins unblinking gaze it was supposed to (and did) put us in Clarice's place, make us feel what she was feeling and even get us to sympathize with her more. The aim was to nearly break the fourth wall to make the viewer feel like they were the Starling character in those moments.

It wasn’t just Lecter. Almost everyone Clarice interacts with is looking straight into the camera. This is a choice that is AMAZING to me because of the way it adapts a book into a different medium. Because of the visual medium of the movie, we lose a lot of Clarice’s inner monologue, since the book is from her POV. These shots of people looking straight at her are to convey her discomfort. When Lecter’s face takes all the shot it’s to show how powerless she feels in front of him, and the more space there is around it the more she takes over the conversation, making him smaller.

My dad was in the fbi for twenty five years and said they didn’t glorify anything in this movie, which made it more authentic and realistic. The offices, the prison, the criminals, etc… all authentically portrayed

The writing and direction in this movie is marvelous, that's why, but also the fact that they had such limited budget and time for the type of movie made it more "realistic". It's also pretty groundbreaking how the movie addresses the issues of gender inequality and misogyny with the female characters, even within the "good guys" side, it addressed many real world issues with all their different nuances and circumstances surrounding them, rather than being outlined in black and white or painted as good/right vs evil/wrong, this feels very authentic and that's why it becomes so saddening, scary and depressing at times, that's what a good psychological horror/thriller should strive to be.

The character of Clarice Starling is one of the best female character leads that I've seen in movies. She's smart, brave and resourceful, such a great character.

Indeed, they do it without making her seem like a man as well. She is also perfectly willing to accept both physical help and advice from men in this movie, which adds to her already incredible intellect and great perception and attention to detail.

The sequel Hannibal (2001), and prequel Red Dragon (2002) are both worth watching. Anthony Hopkins returned for both, and Red Dragon is written by the same screenwriter as this movie. Great cast, and a very similar story structure.

I would argue that he RARELY blinks -- and when he does, it feels deliberate, like a performance, like "I will blink now," which makes it creepier, because it's like he's putting on a show for those around him as he pretends to be a human being. @@generichuman_

It's funny that you mentioned Clarice not checking her corners. What makes it so terrifying is that she was by the end but the killer took away the lights altogether. One thing the film did so well was have the police do everything right but still fail. That's the scare behind the story.

Ok, the fact that you immediately yelled “her corners!!” is why I love your reaction videos so much. You guys really do pay attention to ALL the details and you pick up on those little things a lot of people miss. I admit it took me multiple viewings before I realized they referenced that earlier in the movie. It’s so frustrating when you watch reaction videos and things go over the person’s head or they miss things. Can’t wait to see what other creepy movies you guys have planned. Also, I really hope you guys tackle Squid Game soon, tons of subtlety I think you’d love - I’m getting ready for a rewatch myself.

Its great. The whole final sequence with Clarice in the house is like her final test, and she's not perfect either. We see her get nervous when drawing her weapon which gives Buffalo Bill a chance to run. It was realistic for her as she was an untested FBI recruit.

This really is a fanastic film. No cheap scares. You mentioned the practice of not showing too much and leting the viewers' imaginations fill in the details, and I think that's a lost art. Definitely better than typical "splatter" films. The book this was based on was fantastic, as well as the previous book.prequel, Red Dragon.

I remember reading a quote somewhere, don't remember where anymore, that basically meant "there's nothing scarier than the human imagination." That's the power of implication; where the mind of the observer is allowed to give meaning to what is basically "artistic blank spaces". Silence of The Lambs is a classic example of it in cinema.

The TV show Hannibal was extremely well done. I put off binging it for years because I thought it was just cashing in on the films, but it was a wonderful show and it's hard to believe it was on network TV. It deals with a younger Hannibal, before he's been caught and his relationship with another FBI agent - Will Graham. Mads Mikkelsen almost does the impossible in making you forget Hopkins.

You know what's funny? This movie is so well crafted from every angle, and viewers are so invested in the plot, that no one seems to notice Chris Isaak in the elevator scenes - one of the most iconic musical artists of the 90's. Wicked Game is a legendary tune, video, the whole nine.

There is one mistake in the movie. She tells Lector that the origin of the Buffalo Bill name came from Kansas City homicide. However when she looks at the map she got from Lector where all sites of where the women were kidnapped and their bodies found they are all east of the Mississippi River. There is no reason for Kansas City Homicide to ever be involved in the case.

To your comment about Hannibal not respecting Buffalo Bill. Before Hannibal was found to be a serial killer and cannibal he was a well respected member of affluent society and the medical community. He even performed psychological profiles on FBI cases. He was a patron of the arts, hosted fabulous dinner parties, and was a large figure in Boston high society. The key with Hannibal is he believes he is better than everyone. As he said to Clarice when Miggs insulted her "discourtesy is unspeakably ugly to me." He saw Clarice as his guest and Miggs insulted his guest, and if it's one thing Hannibal cannot stand, it's rudeness. This is why he went to find his patient after he missed three appointments. He was going to kill/eat him for being rude. He considers the rude to be sub-human. Clarice knows this which is why when Hannibal escapes she knows he won't come after her because "he would consider it rude." (Personal Note: I read all the books)

I absolutely love how you guys appreciate a movie for what it is and don't dismiss it because of its age or picture quality or special effects (or lack thereof). It's also incredible to me as an older generation to see that younger people still spot the prejudices of the time and acknowledge them (eg being a woman in a male dominated field) and brings me joy and hope. Please keep watching and reacting to some of the older classics - so many newer films pay homage to them so it's great to appreciate the fact that "they did it first" and set the bar.

You may enjoy the TV series "Hannibal" that aired on NBC a few years back and the prequel "Red Dragon." The TV series ran for three seasons (the second season being the best and most cerebral of the bunch) and was a prequel series to the original novels and movies, following Hannibal, Jack Crawford and the original series protagonist, Will Graham. Prior to Silence of the Lambs, Michael Mann adapted the original novel in the series "Red Dragon" into the film "Manhunter" (1986) with William Peterson staring as Will Graham. The movie is often well regarded, but set in a continuity unrelated to this film. Meanwhile, a sequel to Silence of the Lambs called "Hannibal" was released a decade later by Ridley Scott. It was a hit financially, but received middling reception from critics. Due to the lukewarm reception of that film, producers brought in Ted Tally (who wrote the screenplay for Silence of the Lambs) to adapt "Red Dragon" once more and set it in the Silence of the Lambs continuity. The 2002 prequel stars Ed Norton, Anthony Hopkins returning as Hannibal, and a few other characters make a return.

Thing about the close ups - whenever anyone is talking to Clarice they look directly into the camera at the audience. In the reverse shots Jodie Foster is looking slightly off camera. This is intended to get inside your head (ha!) and make you, the audience, feel like Clarice.

Thomas Harris, author of the book for this said it’s based on some of his experiences because he use to do what Clarice did, and Hannibal is based off I think a Spanish doctor who was a cannibal and would identify who was coming to visit him through closing his eyes and smelling the air. And the other killer in this is based off of multiple real life killers in one, it’s all explained at the begging of the Red Dragon book. Jodie & Anthony both won Oscars for this film.

That's a great call and one I haven't seen anyone else make. Idk, if Jack Crawford called it or was just lucky, but Hannibal would have no respect for Buffalo Bill at all. Buffalo Bill despises who he is and wants to change, whereas, Hannibal takes considerable pride in being better and improving himself. His greatest ambition is to rise above all the so-called powerful "affluent" and "intelligent" people and show them how little they are compared to him. I imagine he would see Buffalo Bill as a coward.

I think one of the scariest things about Hannibal Lecter is the fact that he's this refined, highly-intelligent, charming man who also happens to be, at times, a violent cannibal. If you watch the other movies, like Red Dragon, you get to see Lecter in the past, entertaining guests at a dinner party and being a suave socialite.

No other movie has won the big five at the Oscars since this movie did in 1991. Best picture, best director, best screenplay, best actor and best actress. The first movie that accomplished this feat came out in the 1930s. I can't remember its name. The second was _One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest_ which came out in the 1970s. I'm glad you guys enjoyed the movie. It's one of my absolute favorites.

I think this story was a chess game between Crawford and Lecter. Crawford wanted to use Lecter to catch Buffalo Bill. Lecter wanted to escape. Crawford's approach worked but the price was Lecter escaping. I'd say Hannibal wins, since while a serial killer was caught, an even worse one is loose. Clarice was a chess piece, being manipulated by both men. But she's smart, not clueless. I think that's a big reason why Hannibal respected her. She's smart enough that she got what she wanted out of him and she wasn't to blame for his escape. Crawford told her not to let Hannibal in her head and she did, yet she survived and even benefited from it. She was a worthy foe for Hannibal.

This bad take is extremely disrespectful to Clarice, to consider her just a pawn being manipulated by Crawford. Crawford, if he were a chess player, would have lost in the first move. Everything he tells Starling to not do in her first meeting with Lector, she ends up doing. Had she just been a manipulated pawn, they never would have gotten Lector's help in the first place. Crawford also didn't send her to Lector that last time, when he gave her the crucial information necessary to solve the case. And finally, Crawford went after the wrong guy in the end. It was Starling who continued to pursue her own line of investigation, despite Crawford trying to take her off the board because he thought he'd already won, that saved the day. Literally the only smart thing Crawford did throughout the entire movie was to choose to put Starling on the case in the first place and we don't even know for sure if he did it because he respected her talent or because he thought Lector might respond to a pretty face after so much isolation.

One, he explains why he couldn't send her in 'with a real agenda'. He explains why he talked to her a certain way in front of the police. Lastly, he admits to that other FBI guy that he did try to make the fake deal with Lecter, using Clarice to do it. It's not an insult to her character, she conducts herself well. It's just a fact that Crawford was using her.

Excellent movie in so many ways. And, I do think Hannibal sincerely liked Clarice and felt he related to her, so while Clarice is a good person and Hannibal is a monster, he liked her and even showed signs of trying to take care of her. Asking her about her wounded leg, giving her a towel to brush her hair, etc. He respected that she is intelligent, and not rude. I won't say anything else, as you've only seen Silence of the Lambs, but a few other things we learn from Hannibal influences whether or not I retain this opinion, or even strengthen it.

Buffalo Billy is a combination of real life serial killers while Thomas Harris, the Author of the Hannibal book series, was a journalist at the time. One would lore woman pretending to be a cripple while another kept woman at the bottom of a well for weeks. I can't tell you how many times I've watched the movies or read the books. The descriptions of Hannibal's Mind Palace was the most interesting for me, as well as his memories that are hidden deep within.

This was a great reaction - you picked up on so many details with the direction, and how it put us into Clarice's shoes, which was really cool to see. I know you like to stick to movies mostly, but the Hannibal TV show is well worth your time - it's way better than the other films that came after this one. It shares a lot of the tone and DNA with this movie actually, but elevated even further into an artistic presentation you'll appreciate. Follows Hannibal before he was captured, so we get to see him living his best life as a psychiatrist.

They did say “don’t tell him anything,” but he already figured out she’s not real FBI. If she didn’t confirm that, he wouldn’t continue speaking with her. Crawford told her to gather whatever information she can. The things she’s not supposed to tell him are things about her personal life.

Silence of the lambs is the best movie out of the hannibal series. Anthony Hopkins is a legend and personally i feel that he best captured Hannibal's character( although Mads did a good job in the Hannibal tv series ). @@whitenoisereacts You haven’t seen the tv show and with one episode you still doesn’t have enough to compare their performances, so @LoneWolfe telling you to watch the first episode ain’t enough. If I remember correctly, Hannibal doesn’t show up till the end of the first episode. Both Anthony and Mads are amazing but Mads Mikkelsen is the best Hannibal and the most accurate. Watch the show and you’ll see why. The show is amazing and underrated. The acting, cinematography, visuals & storytelling, everything is perfect.

@@reynaldolorenzo8409 yes they need to watch the show. They’re gonna be blown away. They’re two completely different Hannibals tho. Mads brings a completely modern and fresh take to the character. One of the best TV shows ever made, and that’s not only fan opinion. Critics love it. And you’re right, one episode is not enough to compare. He’s barely in the first one lol. I lowkey feel they would gain so many viewers if they watch the show, there’s not a lot of reactions here on KZbin, good ones anyway at least.

As far as the POV style goes, it works for THIS film, for a number of logical reasons, but filmmakers, beware: don't try this at home. It works in a few cases, but don't assume you're making a film as good as this one.

Lots of films have tried to copy that style, theres a reason it was never good before or after this movie. This one did it correctly, nobody else seems to be able to figure out how to pull it off

I watched this movie for the first time in college but and I loved it so much. I knew about the plot before watching it but I loved the dynamic so much. My goal is to be a forensic psychologist and this movie really ticked my boxes in terms of my interest.

I went to school in LA and right next to where the building was located is the Max Factor building which houses The Hollywood Museum, it was like 3 or 4 floors and on the lowest floor they had the actual hallway set that was used in the movie along with Jodie Foster's chair. This is something not a lot of people know but that chair is actual cut shorter than normal and the "cells" were slightly raised up, in an effort to make Anthony Hopkins appear bigger.

25:32 I love how Hopkins intentionally shoves his nose against the caging in front to make it look as claustrophobic as possible, as if the restraints are so tight that they're literally deforming his features.

This is my favorite movie. I absolutely love it. According to what I’ve read Jody Foster was very scared of Anthony Hopkins and that final scene with the call was not in the script. Anthony did it on his own to creep Jody out.

Your comment about cross referencing those who applied for sexual reassignment and those she might have known or lived in the area (like Mrs. Littman)...... this was 31 years ago maybe longer because1980 was mentioned in the movie. The cross referencing capabilities weren't as sophisticated as they are now. Same with how women were treated...... like Clarice's boss at the autopsy and Dr. Chilton treating her like someone to date and not take the FBI agent seriously because she was a woman. It really was like that back then. Thanks for your reaction. Always a pleasure.

I think part of the reason Hannibal likes Clarice is that she figured out his clues and found his decapitated patient, Ms Mofet. He also turned the guard into a death's head moth. And when she saw the hidden Polaroids of the first victim showing lots of skin, she knew he took the pics. She already knew he knew the first victim. She knew the initials of the name he would use would be J. G. And the name he tells her at the door is Jack Gordon. And I think you see Mrs Littmann's remains in the tub.

Fun fact about Hopkins’ acting here: he said that being autistic really helped him with his acting, and IIRC he noted this role in particular too, because he’s learned to be extremely mindful of every movement and look he gives. Everything he does here is not only calculated, but made to LOOK calculated, unlike his usual, effortless acting. That’s part of what makes him so unnerving here.

When my parents visited Russia and Eastern Europe in the 90s they saw this movie there. The title had been translated as "Quiet Sheep". Which doesn't quite have the same ring to it.

I never thought after watching this film that anyone would ever be able to portray such a terrifying and outstanding version of Hannibal lecter…. But mads mikkelsen exists and I can’t choose btwn him and Anthony Hopkins. They’re both perfection and r both iconic! While silence of the lambs is def more realistic and portrayed better IMO the show is filmed beautifully and much more dynamic in terms of cinematography and the acting in both is 10/10 and I can’t choose and I hope ppl really never do try to pick a fav btwn them bc they’re both beautiful :D

9 Tail Brush is super smart with psychological thrillers. He figured out Hannibal's escape and Norman Bates in Psycho. I havnt seen anyone do that in my life. He needs to watch Basic Instinct and I See You.

Silence of the Lambs is actually one of the movies mentioned in the first Scream, hahaha I really recommend you watch the first Friday the 13th movie and the first Halloween movie before watching Scream!
