The other day someone commented a BIG series spoiler for something that happens in season 5, and thankfully my brother caught and deleted the comment before I saw it. But it was a very intentional spoiler, and just makes me feel really sad and really disappointed. I know there's only a handful of people who like to spoil the show for others, but it honestly makes me want to stop sharing Soprano reactions on KZbin altogether. I'd hate to do this, but I'm considering posting these exclusively on Patreon. For now, I'm trying to stay away from the comment section, although I'll miss chatting about the show and reading your opinions and thoughts.

8:05 This was just after 9/11. Giuliani was the mayor of NYC and a lot of people were pleased with his performance at that time; both with traditional mayoral matters and the 9/11 issues.
@benjaminkirk46787 ай бұрын
Not to mention everyone still remembered him breaking the back of the 5 families in NY with Rico prosecutions as DA. Also the crime rate under Giuliani plummeted. He really had a phenomenal 10+ years and if he’d have just faded into silence after his mayorship instead losing his mind and destroying everything he accomplished he would have left a very different legacy.

@@benjaminkirk4678 Indeed. Giuliani and Police Commissioner William Bratton applied James Q. Wilson's "Broken Windows" theory to NYC. New York of the late 1990's became "the safest big city in the world" as a result if this policing. The cesspit that NYC was in the 1970's and '80's had "experts" saying that the city was "ungovernable," but Giuliani proved them wrong. The vibrant New York of culture and tourists spending money and great ethnic restaurants and a Central Park where people took their families that we saw in movies like You've Got Mail, as opposed to the dirty, dangerous place we saw in movies like Death Wish is a result of his policies. Bloomberg coasted on Giuliani's work, concerning himself with trying to ban Big Gulps, the de Blasio came in, reversed these policies, then Eric Adams decriminalized crime, and we now are returning to the "gritty" and "authentic" New York that filmmakers living elsewhere love but actual New Yorkers have to live with.

There's the concept of "magic realism", something Colombian author Gabriel Garcia Marquez used in his books. With Pablo Escobar, magic realism was just his ability to convince his own psyche that he was a good guy that wanted the best interests of his fellow citizens, as seen in his brief stint as a politician and also his funding local soccer clubs and playgrounds. I see some of the same magic realism with the wives of the Soprano capos, yelling at the priest and being disgusted at those who would disparage their husband's livelihoods. All the Soprano crew live in a quasi-realistic world where they're just hard-working stiffs trying to make a living. I think they're convinced they're not bad people. It's kinda crazy. But it's probably how they bury the guilt of profiting off of others.

Notice how even Carmela & AJ are using people for their own benefit like Tony does. Carm is using AJ as she drags him with her when she sees Furio. Using her own son as a “prick blocker”. AJ uses a kid for his own amusement by lying to him & locking him in a garage. Compare them to Meadow who is well on her way to graduating from a major university & creating her own independently successful life. I think the message behind Christopher is having false idols can destroy your self esteem. Truth is Columbus was an incompetent sailor even for his day. He never set foot in North America. He got lost... landed in Haiti & thought he landed in India!! (missed by only 10,000 miles) He called the natives “Indians” believing he was in India & the name stuck for all Europeans to call native people across the Atlantic... Indians. Even Sil’s “ethnic pride” is fake. He missed the big moment (the parade) because he was gambling & forgot what day it was. Tony’s little speech in the car is probably the only intelligent thing he says in the show.
@newguy11227 ай бұрын
how can someone post something so off base and actually think its right, american indians were called indians 150 years before the Mughal Empire was renamed to India by the british empire.
@GrubHuncher7 ай бұрын
People always do this with everything. It's always one extreme or another. Either Columbus is a flawless, heroic genius, or he was an incompetent, evil piece of garbage. He was just an explorer. His job was to report his findings to the crown which is exactly what he did. Retroactively hating him because he suggested they should enslave the people he'd found, and did other nasty things to them (which is the actual reason people hate him nowadays) is laughable. This was pre enlightenment by like 200 years. You're applying postmodern humanitarian ethics onto a guy who probably bathed once a month. The vast majority of people were illiterate serfs who believed the Earth was flat and if you sailed far enough you'd literally fall off the edge. All of Europe lived under a fundamentalist, totalitarian religious cult. Most people (even educated people) still believed that the Earth was the center of the universe. They did not really have a concept of human rights. He sailed across the Atlantic, didn't sink his ship or crash, and actually managed to find stuff. It was an impressive accomplishment. Clearly he was not incompetent otherwise he would not have made it there and back. The fact that he thought he was in India is only foolish in retrospect. How tf was somebody who lived in the 1400s supposed to know that there was an entire other massive continent between Europe and Asia? He probably assumed that the Earth was much smaller than it actually is and when he ran into a bunch of brown skinned tribespeople he was just like, "oh, I'm in India."
@gregsgoogle29477 ай бұрын
@@GrubHuncher Isn’t a hero someone that discovers something useful & their discovery stands the test of time?? We’re supposed to view their discoveries thru the lense of time to measure their benefits to humans. The Vikings crossed the Atlantic & made it to North America 500 yrs before Columbus was born. Pacific Islanders crossed the Pacific & made it to this continent thousands of years before Italy was a country. They all did this in boats that were the size of large canoes. They knew how to navigate the open ocean using triangulation. Columbus did too... he just wasn’t good at it & got hopelessly lost. Not great. He “discovered” Haiti out of desperation to save his own life. That’s the point of this entire episode... idolizing false hero’s ruins a person’s self esteem. There are many great Italians worthy of hero status. Galileo basically discovered the Universe & suffered terribly for his discovery. The religious cult running Europe put him under house arrest for the rest of his life for his discovery.... the same religious cult that put Columbus on a hero pedestal for us. Columbus was a proud tool who was happy to enrich this cult to keep them in power for centuries to come. Had he not accidentally ran into Haiti he would have died at sea. Some great explorer. He couldn’t even replicate what many others accomplished many centuries before.

@@GrubHuncher I agree, but the only negatives about colombus comes from someone who wanted his job and was putting out bs. He was extremely nice to indians, if anyone tried to take advantage of indians when he was around it was a death sentence, when he went back to spain the people left in the charge were the terrible ones. The only indian slaves he brought back were prisoners of war from when he helped one tribe go against another canable tribe. He was extremely close with the indian elder he met and later adopted his son as his own when elder passed away.
