"How did they get the dog to act?" Naturally. The dog's unsettling behavior wasn't due to any training or coaxing from the animal handlers, it was just acting on its base instincts. It was half-wolf and thus had a more cautious demeanor, especially since it had to be around so many people at once. Even the actors on set found it unnerving.

The dog was actually not a Huskie, but a wolf/malamute mix. His name was Jed, and he acted in several other movies. He was almost 20 years old when he died, in 1995. He was not really scared on set, his sneaking about and solitary manners is simply his wolf-blood acting up. This made him a naturally un-doglike dog, which helped to make him appear spooky and unnatural without actually having to do much real acting.

Here is a funny little fact for you Natalie - when researchers at the current largest US Antarctic research base settle in for the winter, after the last transport flight has left and winter cold and storms means there won't be any more for months, the established hands up there apparently like to have a little movie night for the new intake of scientists and technicians. It is always a double bill, and the two movies shown are always this John Carpenter version of the Thing and Stanley Kubrics adaptation of The Shining by Stephen King. It seems they do it to see if they can rattle the new blood a little. It has become quite the annual tradition.

21:42 -- "why does it look like a spider when it's trying to imitate a human?" Well, when the biomass you have to work with is only that of a detached head, the "imitate a human" ship has kind of sailed. The Thing just slipped into a convenient form that MIGHT allow it to sneak away unnoticed (it almost succeeded). It would hardly have enough biomass to even imitate a human baby, but 1) it had never encountered a human baby and didn't have the template for one in its memory and 2) it is not as if any of the crew would have been fooled if a baby all of sudden turned up at the base.

The Thing is a masterclass of how horror is best when it's unseen. The 'Thing' was always scarier when you couldnt see it; whenever it turned into a giant slimy mega monster sure it was disturbing and threatening and disgusting, but the true fear came when it was indistinguishable from the humans around it. Truly a classic horror movie.
@MrDeejf
@MrDeejf 3 жыл бұрын
The problem with framing it that way is that nobody is ever satisfied with a horror film where you never see the threat at all. Sooner or later, Jaws HAS to surface. Godzilla HAS to stomp Tokyo. Cthulhu HAS to awaken and tear apart reality. If you do things right, then either it's impressive when it does show up, or you've got the audience SO invested that they don't care they can see the zipper on the monster suit.
@JuggyFWB

"The Thing" is an epic masterpiece because it combines *both* forms of horror. It is a deeply psychological movie that can be described as a character study in paranoia, but it is *also* a spectacular monster movie with an amazingly horrific and disturbing creature and ridiculously good monster effects. No other movie has ever combined both aspects of the horror genre together with such perfection.

LOL I loved your dog bias, it made your reactions so unpredictable and fun, especially for someone who's already seen the movie. Your initial reaction was all "poor dog, he must have been traumatized," not suspecting it for a moment, and then when you're supposed to wonder who might be contaminated by the thing once it gets revealed, your main preoccupation was to wonder whether some of the dogs have survived. It was so sweet ^^ When you said "Can some of the Huskies survive though? I know Kurt Russell's gonna survive..." I could almost imagine you thinking subconsciously "I wish Kurt Russell was a Husky... This movie would be better if all the actors were replaced by dogs..." (Voice tone doesn't translate that well in writing so I do want to clarify there's no mockery or teasing whatsoever in my comment. Plus I do approve of your concern for animals, it's not everybody.)

It was still not 24/7 dark yet. It was both horrifying and hilarious. Yes the monster and trapped on the ice. Fire and burning buildings, a huge fear in Antartica. One fan theory that I really like is that when Mac gives Childs the bottle of whiskey to drink at the end, it's actually full of kerosene (because he was just using the same bottles as molotov cocktails in the previous scene). When Childs drinks it and doesn't react like a human should to just drinking kerosene, Mac laughs in tired desperation because he knows that Childs is actually the Thing and is about to sleep again, but there's nothing he can do about it. I really enjoyed the reaction btw, The Thing is by far my favorite horror movie of all time.

Yeah I love that, I think the theory came from a "suppose" concept they were tossing around. Personally I think it would have made a better ending.

Rich B MacReady was about to drink from that same bottle as well, so it’s likely that it wasn’t kerosene.

Childs has no breath. Like mc ready has steam when he breaths but childs didn't.

Grim_skull I pretty sure the director said it was because of the angle of the lighting, so we can’t use that as a clue.

"This is like messed up Ol' Yeller" has got to be one of the best descriptions I've ever heard. BTW, the wolf-dog performer was named Jed and starred in The Journey of Natty Gann and White Fang.

My roommate's mother is one of the roughly 80 people that works at the Antarctic research base. She visits us around Christmas (summertime in the southern hemisphere), and she says that during their winter there's about a four month period where no planes can get to them. So it's a tradition to watch The Thing right after the final supply restock of the season. =)
