Joe Morton, the actor who plays Miles Dyson has, in my opinion, one of if not the best death scenes in cinema. It is dramatic enough without being over acting. You literally can feel the life leaving him and he still tries to not kill the swat guys. I find myself comparing many other death scenes to this and while they may be more impactful or emotional, just for straight acting chops I have to give it to Joe.

Terminator is really a horror film. Natalie, I watched T2 in the theater opening weekend. In the future war flash scene when the HK gets shot down, the crowd roared in approval. The hype was that strong. John and the 800's dynamic steal the show. A boy and his Terminator. Oh yeah Linda's first day on set with Arnold he said, "Linda, you are so shredded!" With his accent, just gold.

What set The Terminator apart from other slasher films was that you got to see the monster in repose. You don't see Freddy Kreuger looking for weapons or Jason Voorhees patching up damage after an unsuccessful encounter with the protagonists. Those other slasher monsters have a more cameo role in their own films because the camera never lingers upon them like they do with the Terminator.

So him as the bad guy surprised them. Then they got the Terminator 2 and even said "Okay, I get it now that Arnold plays the bad guy in these rather than the hero character he becomes in other movies) only to get the switch up. The meeting of Sarah and the Terminator is one of my favorite scenes in the film, the previous scene is her kicking butt ducking and dodging the staff but the second Arnold walks out she freeze's and drops to the floor, I've always seen it as the PTSD the original terminator inflicted on her flooding outwards finally.

Agreed 100%. And the biggest parts that push it over the top for me - the music and the camera shift. The "heartbeat of the machine" theme they gave to Arnie's Terminator...all other sound stops, just this cold metallic rhythmic hammering as he comes into frame as we switch to Sarah's POV. Until then, the scene was in 3rd person, watching Sarah kick ass and enact her escape plan. Then it takes a hard right into one of her nightmares, and we're pulled right in with her. Doesn't help that he's wearing almost the exact same outfit, glasses and all (since he wasn't wearing them in the beginning), as when the Terminator in T1 stormed the police station and she witnessed him massacre so many people firsthand (and funnily enough, also the first place where she met the psychiatrist).

Yes, and it adds a level of vulnerability to the otherwise so kick-ass character of Sarah Conner of part two. She isn't this unflapable person who has been there, done that, and gets totally jaded. No, she still fights her inner demons, every single day. She expresses her fear, gets totally irrational and emotional about it, yet her son, the one person she absolutely NEEDS to survive, pulls her out of her fugue.

I do know for a fact that it's not in the screenplay, and either Arnold or Cameron has stated in interviews that Arnold ad-libbed the line, which is the only way I knew this. By the way, one thing in the theatrical cut that is a throwback to something that was cut out is when Arnold smiled because of the minigun. In a deleted scene that you're probably aware of, John tried to get Arnold to smile with some dubious results. The latter scene was cut while the former remained. @rbrtck in the Director's Cut or Extended Version, they shut the Terminator down for a bit to flip the CPU so it can go from "read only" to "read and write". With it being set on "read and write" the terminator was able to learn and adapt and blend in with humans better. Because that scene exists and it is canon in my mind, it makes sense that he would say, "I need a vacation." The first time I saw this movie, that scene elevated it from being "just" a sci-fi action movie to being something really special. Linda Hamilton conveyed all of the emotions in one moment -- the numbness of living with the knowledge of a nuclear holocaust, the fury at the man who is in some way responsible for it, and the horror of what she is doing to him. That scene elevates the entire film, it is its moral center.

A very few movies I distinctly remember premier night at the theater. This is one. The overwhelming energy in the audience that night could be summed up as a constant "WOW". The effects look a bit dated today, but they were bleeding edge at time of the premier, and the twists throughout the film kept us constantly guessing. The moment when liquid metal terminator moved through the prison bars was the moment the audience gasped, realizing this terminator could act in ways we couldn't predict, and he did. T2 was definitely a huge improvement on T1, and the best of the series. T1, as you've noted, was a great film hampered by dated effects. I've always wondered if they gave it the George Lucas "Star Wars" treatment, applying new effects later, if the film would be an improvement.

The computer systems needed to animate and render the T-1000 CGI cost thousands of dollars alone, but creating the character also relied on a variety of practical appliances, visual illusions, and filming techniques. A team of up to 35 staff at Industrial Light & Magic were required for the five minutes of screen time the T-1000's effects appear, and the process was so complex that rendering 15 seconds of footage would take up to ten days.

(Anyone who says that shooting a real gun without ear protection doesn't bother them is already half-deaf.) Fun fact, him swinging the gun near the start was actually an effective method to "cock" such a rifle one handed. Usually such rifles require two hands to reload each shot as the next round is chambered by "cocking" the level attached to the trigger guard. This would typically require one hand to hold the rifle steady whilst the hand on the trigger cocks the lever to reload. As he was also riding a motorcycle he had to do this one handed by swinging it in such a way...also just looks cool for the film.

In the scene where the T-1000 comes from the floor and kills the twin @12:43, the reason it's done that way is because the left side of your brain controls speech, by going through the left eyeball, leaves the victim unable to scream (assuming they survive the stab).

I always liked that they used Linda Hamilton's twin sister in the final scene where there are two of them needed. The first set of twins, the portly guard that was also a white and black checkered floor, I've seen those twins in other movies. I knew that Linda Hamilton had a twin but I had never seen her work before.

Hey Natalie, fun fact: The helicopter chase under the overpass was a real stunt conceived of by James Cameron. Chuck Tamburro, a legendary Hollywood helicopter pilot claimed it could be done but the crew scheduled to shoot it literally would not shoot the scene because of how dangerous it was. As a result, James Cameron personally flew the stunt with Tamburro and one stunt driver in the car, because no one else would shoot it for him!

The other scene with the motorcycle and helicopter was filmed with the cycle and a dummy I think launching out of the building, with a cable attached to stop it in mid flight. Then they had to remove the cable on each individual frame of the film by hand. Way back in the day, there was a trade book called Cinefex that went through all of the effects in the movie. Loved reading all that stuff.

9:44 Spinning the gun is the way to chamber the next shell with one hand. Normally with a lever action rifle or shotgun you hold it in one hand and pull the lever down and pack up with your other hand. This spin does the lever action without having to use two hands. And it looks cool.

he could have suggested continuing the project but making adjustments to prevent it from going haywire again. That might not work, but it's worth thinking about at least because if the technology exists someone is going to make it, might as well have a hand in it's creation and steer it the right way. Of course, that logic doesn't tend to work out well in action / horror movies, but the characters wouldn't know they're in a story

One of my favorite movies of all time! Much to my mother's dismay, my dad showed me these movies as a kid. I remember him showing me all the behind the scenes bits on the DVD, and telling me how they did the practical effects, the fake blood spurts and prosthetic makeup. Now, he did that because he wanted to make sure that I had a good grip on reality, and knew that movie monsters and whatnot are fake, which worked, but it also planted the seeds for my love of SFX makeup! I'm nowhere near a professional, never took classes or anything, but I like doing it as a hobby, I worked a haunted house one year and did a bunch of zombie makeup for the actors, and 100% credit my dad and our mutual love for this movie for sparking that interest

to answer you question after the 9:00 mark it was a stunt double and it was a fairly obvious stunt double, but when the film was re-released a few years ago, they CGI'ed Arnold's face over the stunt guy, though they didn't give the same treatment to some of John's shots. There's other fixes throughout the film like removing technical wires and even Robert Patrick's dignity remained intact because they removed his 'tip' that used to be viewable when he crouched at the start (never noticed that myself until honest trailers pointed it out, lol.)

Miles Dyson is one of my favorite characters in movies. He's extremely heroic without having any of the powers or abilities of the people and machines around him. He gladly sacrifices his life's work when he learns that it will lead to so much death. He dies to see the future prevented. And when he dies he *even still* finds a way to be even more heroic by doing what he can to not kill the very men who just killed him, because he knows that they're innocent. He's the best character in the movie and I love that the TV series made his son grow up to know how great his father was
