This movie is pure 70's. It just can't exist outside the time period. In the 80's gang fights escalated to gun battles and drive by shootings in the US.
@goldenageofdinosaurs71922 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there’s definitely a certain nostalgia that I have for this movie. It was a dangerous time in New York, but there’s a certain naïveté about it when viewed now. Things got so much crazier in the late 80’s/early 90’s.
@williamjones60313 жыл бұрын
1. When this came out many of the larger cities didn't run it. They were afraid it would lead to gang violence. 2, Marcelino Sánchez/Rembrandt was gay and died of AIDS in 1986. 3. My favorite character is Luther. He's f-ing nuts. 4. "Warriors, come out to play" was ad lib. The director told David Patrick Kelly to come up with something menacing and he looked back to when he was a kid and a creepy old neighbor used to torment the kids by telling them to come out to play. 5. End it with Joe Walsh.

Don't forget the character Fox was killed off at the subway because he was a pain in the butt with the director and was killed off on purpose. I heard he wanted to become the love interest of the prostitute and have a bigger role in the movie and the director got tired of him complaining and change the script and wrote him off.

15:41 in the documentary, James Remar explains how he got the role of Ajax, this scene where he's fighting with Mercedes Ruehl while chained up to the park bench, he auditioned in front of the producer and the director using the table as if he was going to throw it. James Remar along with the late Sonny Landham, who played the subway cop who says Hey before Swan throws the baseball bat causing him to trip, the late Marcelino Sanchez, who played Rembrandt the artist, and David Patrick Kelly, who plays Luther, the guy who frames the Warriors, ended up working with Walter Hill, the director again in the buddy cop action film comedy, 48 HRS starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy making his theatrical debut. Strangely enough, David Patrick Kelly would keep the same character named Luther in the film 48 hours.

In the 1965 novel, the warriors were an all black gang. With the film adaptation had gotten the rights, they decided to make the Warriors a multiracial gang because unlike the original story, they felt that no one would see the film if the gang was all one ethnicity particularly black.

y’know. it didn’t dawn on me until now how morally questionable the Warriors are as a gang. Like as a kid I presumed they were all good, because they were the main characters. But then you have characters like Ajax, who are literally arrested for attempted sexual assault, and it dawns on you that the gang isn’t a monolith. There are definitely things that haven’t aged well in this film, but it definitely holds up as a good and fun narrative.

When this film got released in 1979, there were reports of people getting stabbed and shot, so the advertising for the film, including the movie posters had to be pulled ultimately some theaters discontinuing the film because of the negative controversy where some people who emulated from the film way too much ended up killing people in spite of it being a cult classic.
