One of the best things about this movie is the DVD commentary. Ben Stiller, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr do the commentary and RDJ talks the whole time doing his Lincoln Osiris voice. He didn't drop character until he did the DVD commentary. Just like he promised in the movie. It's hilarious.

Except he did drop character in the movie so technically he didn't actually deliver on that promise.
@ReligionOfSacrifice Жыл бұрын
He did drop his character as Neil Armstrong felt it necessary to point out as having no acting experience he let the script read him. "I'm a dude (Neil Armstrong) playing a dude (Father O'Malley) disguised as another dude (Sgt. Lincoln Osiris)." Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) has completely forgotten who he is... Kirk Lazarus was pulled from the refrigerator upon reentry to Earth's atmosphere and through his agent found he had to be a gay priest. Of course Neil Armstong lacked acting experience, but went for Immersive Acting, but without the ability to remember his lines he dropped that and let the script read him. Why not? He's a strong astronaut who usually succeeds at things, but Neil Armstrong found it was hard to lose the persona of being gay and not knowing how to be a black man chose the "Roots" character of Chicken George for his accent, but no doubt it was unnerving to see himself in the mirror when he heard he was scared of himself. Neil Armstrong probably found it hard to understand himself as a black man. You gotta give credit to Tugg Speedman for knowing how to crack his opponent during an argument.

Random trivia: The part where Robert Downey says "Whatchoo getting at with the books, scripts? Spit that shit out, man!" and starts to smile but then gets serious again, that was actually a bad take because Downey was visibly trying not to laugh. But Stiller liked it so much he kept it in.

Fun facts about Tom Cruise's Les Grossman: The character was a VERY minor talking head before Cruise advised Stiller on the script. Initially it was supposed to be just the guys in the jungle w/very little studio interaction. Cruise read those parts & told Stiller it would make the movie even funnier if the studio was more involved & characters expanded upon. Stiller took his notes & thought they were hilarious, so he immediately offered him the part of Grossman. He didn't want to take it at first, but convinced Stiller to allow him to use prosthetics to give him "fat hands", and he was going to dance. They did a makeup & screen test, where Grossman dances to the song you hear at the end of the film, and Stiller was laughing so hard he had no choice but to take the character & expand upon him, and the studio as a whole. That's where Bill Hader & Matthew McConaughey come in.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. It's hard to describe the brilliance of when the actual movie trailers stopped and seemlessly blended into the movie. We all thought those were legit trailers for a moment, and then after that moment of realization, everyone in the theater was laughing their asses off. All the commentary about how ridiculous actors can be, and the hollywood machine is, this may be one of the greatest movies of all time. It's got a billion dollar cast, and absolutely no one phones in their performance.

You asked for other great comedies, so here you go. I tried to focus on comedies similar to Tropic Thunder in terms of having big budget, star power, and being pretty over-the-top funny or absurd, and some have actors from Tropic Thunder. But then some are just on the list because they are just incredibly funny. - Austin Powers movies (all three are great, but the 3rd is the funniest with most star power IMO) - Year One (stars Jack Black, and a great cast, very underrated) - Mystery Men (Ben Stiller superhero spoof with great cast, underrated) - Zoolander (Ben Stiller, funny, great cast) - Old School (Will Ferrell and others) - The 40 Year Old Virgin (Steve Carell, Seth Rogen comedy) - The Other Guys (Will Ferrell & Mark Wahlberg) - Airplane! (generally considered funniest movie of all time) - Blazing Saddles (Mel Brooks' funniest movie) - The Jerk (Steve Martin's funniest) - Talladega Nights (Will Ferrell) - Real Men (old school comedy, box office flop but has cult following, super underrated) - Central Intelligence (the Rock & Kevin Hart team up for the Rock's funniest movie) - Land of the Lost (it has flaws, but also some great moments, and stars both Will Ferrell and Danny McBride) - The Naked Gun (close to Airplane! for funniest movie ever) - Human Nature (underrated comedy from surreal screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, stars Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption and other stars) Halloween comedies. Here are some great comedies that are Halloween-appropriate: - Ghostbusters (classic comedy movie, 80s vibe, and good fit for Halloween) - Once Bitten (no one has reacted to this, which is a shame. Real underrated comedy starring Jim Carrey, and may be his very first lead role, and has vampires, so good fit for Halloween) - Young Frankenstein (Mel Brooks' second funniest movie, but maybe best story apart from the laughs, and its about Frankenstein so good for Halloween) - Scary Movie & Scary Movie 3 (Scary Movie 2 is not good IMO). The first movie spoofs I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream, so better if you've seen those, but I myself only saw parts of those movies, was kind of familiar with the villains and plots from them, and still enjoyed Scary Movie. Scary Movie 3 is best of the franchise and spoofs the Ring and Signs and some other stuff, again funnier if you've seen them, or at least are familiar with them. - Four Rooms (Tim Roth, pretty outrageous / mature humor)

@DerMoerpler2 жыл бұрын
@@StinkyGreenBud But this movie still could be made today. The "everything has to be PC today" thing is way overblown and not actually a problem, because people still understand satire like Tropic Thunder. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and South Park are still on the air and the humor in those shows goes way further than Tropic Thunder. Jojo Rabbit was a comedy about a Hitler youth boy with Adolf Hitler as his imaginery best friend andit was nominated for several Oscars. None of those get any significant backlash, nobody involved got canceled. A few random people complaining on Twitter is not proof that "everything has to be PC these days". The only thing that's not acceptable anymore is jokes that are actually discriminatory and that kick down at minorities, and to be honest, those were never that funny outside of their shock value. Any old movie that's still relevant because of it's risky humor is smarter than that, which is why they're still relevant.

I love this movie, after all the tolerance, the comedy genre has died, the time will come and comedy, and especially black comedy, will be reborn!

TOP SECRET! was Val Kilmer’s first movie. Filled with legendary funnies!! It’s in the vein of HOT SHOTS (the Charlie Sheen spoof series), and THE NAKED GUN movies. All very funny!!😂😭

Love that you were just as stunned at the landmine. No reaction whatsoever.

My fav aspect of this film is the multiple "shout outs" to "Apocalypses Now."

Appreciate your honesty because I never heard anyone say in public that they liked '"I am Sam". Respect for that.

Ben Stiller's overdramatic flopping as he's shot isn't too big an exaggeration from the scene in Platoon that it parodies. Won't say which actor to avoid spoilers though. Definitely watch all the classic Nam movies to understand this one. Especially "Apocalypse Now."
