First he has an indestructible skull so you can't cut his head open for easy access to the spot you need, meaning you'd need to enter through his eye, ear or nose and have to cut through his brain to get to the right spot. It'd be difficult but not impossible. But then you have to KEEP cutting his brain until the blockage is in because it WILL be trying to heal itself while you're doing this. Plus the whole point is that painkillers don't work on him so the whole operation would have to be done with him feeling it all. Not pleasant. And then, even if you manage to insert the blockage, the nature of his healing factor means that at some point his body would either push it out of his head (again, through his eye or ear or nostril) or his brain would simply rewire itself AROUND it and he'd just have a hunk of Adamantium in his brain that no longer serves any purpose.

- Logan wasn’t “given” his powers, he was born with them. His healing power is also the _only_ reason he survived the “procedure” of having metal bonded to his skeleton. - The reason Logan was the one who got airlifted by Storm, is bc he’s one of the few who’d survive the fall if he missed and fell. - Storm is a VERY powerful mutant. Sadly, writers rarely do her any justice. She can do a lot more than throw lightning and yep, her powers work indoors, outside, underwater, space, etc.

They gave Storm at least a little character interest in that they made her very reluctant about her powers. She knows how powerful she is. She has the control, but she still is afraid of her own power. You can see her reluctance and hesitation in a lot of situations in the film. She becomes much more of a leader going forward and really steps up. She is a literal force of nature and one of the handful that Magneto actually would think twice about directly attacking.

The X-Men were always used as a surrogate for repressed or marginalized people. The early issues were stand ins for the civil rights movement. Various storylines over the years paralleled immigrants, AIDS victims, abuse victims, etc. Bryan Singer leaned into the gay rights metaphor with all of the subtlety of Charles Nelson Riley seizing the center square. Which always made it odd to me that his villains are also mutants. On the one hand he's sending the message that mutants/gays aren't a threat and just want to live their lives, but then he has mutant/gay villains who (in this movie) want to turn normal/straight people into mutant/gays. No spoilers for X2 but the plotline is equally a head scratcher as pro-gay messaging goes.

@Vasharan
@Vasharan 3 жыл бұрын
@@vanyadolly Sadly, black men are shot by cops because of a disproportionate fear of their physical abilities (among other reasons), and many conservatives fear gays because they think the gays will convert their kids (or them), when in reality, it's more likely to be just a threat to their own sexual insecurities. So just because marginalized groups in real life are just regular people, that doesn't mean that the people who discriminate against them are rational about their fears. To respond to @Mauther, the mutants and the X-Men have also been a surrogate for discrimination against gays long before Singer's movie. The Legacy virus subplot from the Claremont era was a straight up parallel of the AIDS virus, a disease which was at first thought to only affect gays but had no problem infecting straight people. Not to claim that the comics were exclusively about gay rights, since the X-Men were a metaphor for many marginalized groups, but it definitely wasn't Singer who made that connection first.

It's really interesting seeing this film 20+ years after its release, because in a post-MCU world it seems fun and decently-made, but maybe not extraordinary or all that special. But when this movie first came out in 2000, Hollywood had all but given up on superhero movies, and the few that did still come out were mostly super-cheap, super-corny, or super-niche. So this movie really felt like a major leap forward, and it almost single-handedly revitalized mainstream superhero movies in the modern era.

Exactly. It's a combination of the original X-Men Trilogy and the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy that breathed new life into the big budget superhero film genre again. @@DaviniaHill If something is saturated, then it's holding as much of something (usually water) as it possibly can. So if something is OVERsaturated, it can no longer hold/withstand the amount of whatever it's trying to hold. An oversaturated sponge will be leaking water, for example. So in this case, if the market is oversaturated with superhero movies, that means more superhero movies are getting released than the general population is willing to watch/be interested in. Now, as with everything related to movies, whether or not the market is or isn't oversaturated with superhero movies is a matter of opinion. A new superhero movie could get released every single week and some people will still say it's not oversaturated. But it seems the general consensus is that we either are at or getting close to an oversaturation of superhero movies, just like how in the late 2000's/early 2010's the market was oversaturated with zombie content.

Storm's "What happens to a Toad" line feels weird on its own, but the reason it exists at all is because the script originally had Toad spouting random facts about toads throughout the movie. It was basically Storm telling him to stfu. They ended up cutting all of Toad's toad trivia but for some reason decided to leave Storm's line in.

Wolverine was the better choice for Storm to lift because, if something went wrong, Cyclops most likely would have fallen to his death. With Logan's healing ability and his adamantium skeleton he could survive such a fall. On top of that, he ended up being the better choice because he was able to hold onto the metal structure with his claws, which then gave them the few seconds needed for Jean to use her telekinesis to steady and hold him in place, which allowed Storm to reduce her elemental weather powers and let Logan drop onto the structure.

the rationale they give in film is that if Storm messed up with Wolverine then Cyclops could still blow up the machine from where he was standing - he didn't need to get any closer it was just that it would be dangerous and probably kill Rogue. But I think we all understand that the REAL real reason is that the writers needed to fabricate some way for the whole group to work together as a team, so.. Wolverine destroys the machine, Storm blows him up to it, Jean steadies him, Cyclops shoots Magneto.... when it would have been much simpler if Storm just flew up there herself probably.

Natalie, really loving all these reactions and bravo on your intuition predicting some of the plot. Fun fact: When X-Men premiered in 1963 it was NOT popular and even got cancelled, before undergoing a renaissance in the 1970s with writer Chris Claremont. Mutants are a decades long metaphor for experiencing racism and discrimination. Claremont's original arc was to be the redemption of Magneto as an anti-hero, though it was never fully realized by him (with Magneto reverting to the villain in other storylines).

Some fun facts about this movie: Hugh Jackman's terrified reactions when he meets Ian McKellen are real; he was told Magneto was going to tear open the train car, and assumed that meant ripping off the door, not tearing the entire car in half. When he stops falling at 26:48, he lets out a real yell of pain; this is because the harness he was wearing slipped and pinched him in the groin. Also, Rebecca Romijn-Stamos accidentally kicked the senator for real at 12:13. Also, Ian McKellen actually declined the role of Gandalf because he was busy filming this; director Bryan Singer changed the filming schedule so McKellen could finish his scenes first at the end of 1999, and then travel to New Zealand in January 2000.

After the comments about how some of the scenes looked 'early 2000s', it's because the studios weren't confident about superhero movies at the time. Some of the scenes haven't aged well and I wonder if it is because of the budget. It will be interesting to see if Natalie feels different about X2 which had a much large budget. I don't think it is an overstatement to say almost singlehandedly X1 rekindled studios' faith in superhero movies. It sounds crazy now but I'm not sure if the next set of movies (Spiderman, Batman Begins, and X1) would have been made without the success of X1. It certainly would have been tougher to get the big budgets for special effects.

The problem was that superhero movies were hugely popular in the past (Superman in the 70s, Batman in the 80s), but their awful sequels killed those franchises. It took X-Men to rebuild studios confidence in the genre. Marvel also struggled to achieve the results DC had with their movies.

The younger generation won't understand how Nerd culture held its breath while we waited for the box office results for this movie. When it opened with $50 million (a massive sum in those days) it opened the floodgates and changed everything. No more small budget Spawn or Steel movies, it was time for Spiderman, Hulk and eventually the MCU.

@@TorIverWilhelmsen comparing the opening scene from X-Men to the opening scene from First Class I find is an excellent lesson on how pacing and editing can really change how a scene feels. It's, at one level, a shot-for-shot remake of the scene. But then the scene as it plays in the original film is so much more impactful just because it lingers a little longer on different shots. The First Class remake feels rushed and doesn't hit as hard.

The idea that there are big, roundish, lumpy, stick like, bones inside/underneath/behind -- or whatever -- of Wolverine's, kitchen knife thin claws (depending on the artistic license of whoever is drawing him at the time) was not added to the comics until well after the character was established. I am a huge fan of much of what writer Larry Hama has done in comics, but everything about the story that revealed Wolverine's 'bone claws' is dumb, and the bone claws themselves are super dumb, but yeah, at this point, depending on where you want to call the 'time of death' for the 'canon' Marvel Comics Universe, bone claws are technically canon. Wolverine's metal skeleton, and the claws that come with them, are all considered by the scientists/agency that created them to be part of a program that was intended to turn Logan into military 'product'. As the process of installing the Adamantium components into their 'product' would kill an ordinary human, Logan's healing factor put him on top of a short list of individuals the people running the experiment considered viable. If the evil scientists already had a guy who can not die, and can run around and pop out sharp stabby things that don't set off metal detectors, why would they add metal to the equation? His healing factor was the reason why they chose him to put the metal system, claws and all, inside of. It makes no sense for him to have mutant claws to start with.
@taz291819
@taz291819 3 жыл бұрын
@@willarms5510 His claws aren't really bones, they are more like made of keratin (same as your fingernails). The Weapon X program couldn't just give him the claws, how would he be able to control them? Since he had keratin claws to begin with, they simply laced them with adamantium.

X-Men comics were really iconic in the 80's...they were created by Stan Lee, but modified by writer Chris Claremont. Basically, they started w/ Charles Xavier & Erik Lensherr meeting in college and becoming friends to protect mutantkind. But they deviated in philosophy - Xavier wanted co-existence w/ mankind... Lensherr wanted supremacy. Charles formed X-Men as Professor X, while Lensherr formed Brotherhood of Mutants as Magneto. The original X-Men were Cyclops, Jean Grey as Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman (Bobby Drake) and Angel (Both Angel & Beast appeared in the X3 movie) Later, new X-Men joined... Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Kitty Pryde as Shadowcat, Nightcrawler & Rogue. The villains besides Magneto & the Brotherhood, were Apocalypse (the 1st mutant)... Mr. Sinister (a mutant scientist)... the Hellfire Club (another mutant group) ... Juggernaut (Prof. X's step brother empowered by a magic gem)

The correlation to the Civil Rights Movement is also why Marvel took off like it did. DC wasn't concerned with the real world while Marvel dove head first into the struggles of the times and that resonated with people. Marvel also made sure to use real world locations while DC leaned heavily into made up places like Metropolis, Gotham, Central City, Gateway City, Coast City and the like.

@@Falcun21 To me, that is why the X-Men films still have a resonance. I find the MCU films rather empty spectacles (ironically when you consider that Marvel's greater engagement with reality was a key to their success) - they look great, but I don't often get that invested in the characters. To be honest, the only one I may seek out to rewatch is "Ant-Man and Wasp" since the conflict in that one is deeply personal, with the main antagonist desperately trying to survive rather than pursuing a big agenda

@@Falcun21 no, that is 90's revisionism. When the Silver Age started, Lee & Kirby were still writing about The Other, not tied to Civil Rights inherently. Mainstream vs. subgroups.
