You spotted Stan Lee, but the person we see right before that - the one whose lawnmower drifted away from him - is Chris Claremont. He wrote X-Men comics for 17 years, and is largely responsible for the characters becoming popular in the first place. A LOT of what you see in all of the X-Men movies is built on stories he - and his many artistic collaborators - told over the years.

I think one of the reasons people love this movie when conically watching it for the first time is they aren't jaded by the months and years of pent up expectations from a theatrical release schedule. I remember the anticipation for this movie, they had teased the Phoenix story in the last one, and it was months of comic book analysis and expectations for the film... Which was sadly detrimental when the story was taken in a different direction. Watching again from a new perspectives week on week means you by no mean have the same bias and you can see the story and arch they were going for
@MrBooligan
@MrBooligan 2 жыл бұрын
Which is the way films should be enjoyed, the way they intended it. I think people don't realize the movies/video games/tv shows and other media that comes from other source material don't have to be direct 1:1 carbon copies of the comics. They never are for any media based on source material bc that would be boring and contrive. We love the comics for what they are but how many times do we need to see the exact same story rehashed. I loved this movie, and loved the comics, and am happy they are varied bc if it played out exactly how I knew it was going to play out, I'd be mad disappointed. To each their own though
@TBirum1
@TBirum1 Жыл бұрын
@@MrBooligan while both of you make good points, when it come to X-3 it is almost always at the bottom of the lists when people rank the X-Men movies. The movie *Days of Future's Past* was written to basically "Ret-Con" X-3 To basically make it so that nothing in X-3 happened moving forward with the films. Bryan Singer (Regardless of how you feel about him as a director or even as a person) directed the first two films, and those are widely regarded as two of the best films in the X-Men franchise. X-3 is dogshit when compared to the first two entries. Killing off Cyclops off screen!?!?! The Phoenix getting taken out by being stabbed!?!? Juggernaut being a punk ass who gets knocked out by having his powers weakened and running into a wall?!?! One of the reasons X-3 is so hated by (Most) X-Men fans is because of how badly it was written. People are fine with deviation from the source material, as long as it is well written and well executed, but they HATE it when it is poorly written and poorly executed.

Well, the movies are really all over the place. and characters that should have a deeper relationship are unrelated. Like Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver being the daughter and son of Magneto. And then there being two Quicksilvers in the X-Men movies, and in the MCU. Which I get it, it was two studios who held the different rights. I am excited that it's all under one roof so in the future hopefully we can get better continuity. That said, I've always liked the X-Men movies, and the tone they had being different from the MCU was kind of refreshing. I'll be sad to see that change. But I also feel like the Fox X-Men were around long enough that they were able to tell some great stories, have some great arcs for the characters, and flesh out the franchise. So I can't complain really. I'm glad we got what we did, and I'm excited to see where the MCU ultimately goes with the X-Men from here on out.

It’s when we put everyone into their little boxes that we forget that despite who we love, what we believe in, or our skin color, we are all people. Even the bad ones. When we stop treating people like people we lose a bit of our own humanity in the process. 👍🏾✌🏾👊🏾

Always liked this movie. Most of the hate comes from the fact that it's a big departure from the comic book storyline it's based on, but different takes on fictional characters/stories, never bothered me too much. The "Dark Phoenix" movie meanwhile checks more boxes when it comes to being "accurate" to the source material, but that film is just boring.

I don't know about other people, but I hate that they took The Phoenix, who was supposed to be a cosmic entity of raw power posessing a mutant woman (and Dark Phoenix, who was supposed to be the cosmic entity corrupted by human lusts and tempers), and reduced her to an autistic little girl with too powerful an organic mutant ability for her own good. A pet peeve of mine is that when Wolverine gutted her with his claws, killing her instantly, all the objects she was levitating at the time (including half the water in San Francisco Bay) settled gently and gradually back down rather than come crashing down in an instant. The latter would have been more realistic and a good deal more exciting.

It is largely hated by a lot of the fans of the franchise but I think it has aged the best of the first trilogy. and it always felt truer to the comic books to me. In fact the surviving team more closely resembles the team as it was when I first started reading X-Men. No Xavier, Scott or Jean(they weren't dead, just not around). Storm as the leader with Wolverine as her number two and Colossus and Kitty as mainstays. Just missing Nightcrawler but apparently Alan Cummings hated that makeup and did not want to do it again. The real test will be X-Men origins: Wolverine. Even I won't defend that one.

The world didn't need an entirely second cut of Anchorman 2 when the first one was terrible on its own. While it would be better from a cinematic stand point, the final shot of Magneto shows that it wouldn't matter either way, and possibly could have been worse in the end. His powers returning even after having been hit with multiple vials seems to imply that the "cure" isn't actually permanent, just a temporary suppression effect. Yes Bobby and Marie could have had some time together and been more intimate, but it would have eventually come to an end. That in and of itself could have been good, bad or neutral, same as any other relationship. But imagine if her powers returned while they were asleep together. Imagine if she got pregnant while her powers were still suppressed, but then they returned... There are so many ways it could have ended horribly and only a few where it turns out okay.

The only mutants that were “forced” to get cured in this movie are the violent ones that were attacking people. They were “cured” to be stopped. If I’m remembering right anyway since it’s been years since I’ve actually seen the full movie.

I hate how out of character Magneto is in this movie. It's suggested that he only cares about mutants because of their powers but the other movies make it clear that he cares about mutants as individuals. It's insulting how they treated the character in this movie.

the class4, class5 thing they brought up for the first time tied in with the 'cure'. Magneto was a class4 so needed 4 doses if they had gone after Jean, they would have needed 5 (if they could even get it close to her).

I think I might give this movie another chance after 15 years. The reason I deeply disliked it was because of the buthcering of the Phoenix storyline but since Nat's not familiar with any of that and just judge the movie on its own dramatic containment has given me another perspective... that why I also love your reactions.

I'm a lot more tolerant of it now we have had First Class and DOFP and can see this as more an entertaining side story rather than what was effectively the end of the X-men movies boxed in with nowhere to go. At the time I thought it was an abomination not only as it had the barest resemblence to the Phoenix storyline except in name, it also killed off characters for what felt like shock value and the characterisation felt forced for the sake of the story. Now we've had a couple of decent films (I like the first two anyway), we had Logan, and the whole MCU has shown people have an appetite for longer term build up of characters, so it's not the death of the franchise it seemed to be at the time and I can give it a pass for what it is.

In the comics (1980s), The Phoenix becomes so powerful, she flies to a distant star and 'consumes' it. A planet orbiting that star is destroyed, killing the billions of inhabitance. She returns to Earth and fights the X-men who believe she will kill everyone on Earth. Wolverine has a chance to kill her but cannot bring himself to do so. Jean, in a moment of sanity, tells Scott she can't stop The Phoenix every moment of every day. She kills herself. Years later, the Fantastic Four find a telekinetic cocoon where the real Jean lay. The one who sacrificed herself was a cosmic being that took her place. Like a Phoenix, the real Phoenix returns. Comics, oh well.

Even with a Marvel Unlimited subscription and pandemic-levels of free time, I’ve never managed to find where they soft-retconned that. Phoenix: Endsong was a fan-frickin-tastic story when I read it, but couldn’t make heads or tales of it with Death of Phoenix and early X-Factor I read as a kid.

Also another reason why this feels totally different from the first two movies is because it has a new director which was Brett Ratner. That's why there's a lot of things that are put in this film that were never mentioned before like classes etc.

Agreed, I enjoy the movie. Quality-wise, I feel it's an upper middle-tier superhero movie with plenty going on for it, and it came out 2 years before "Iron Man" and "Incredible Hulk", and one year before Raimi's Spider-Man 3 This era of Marvel movies felt very "DC" in style (not necessarily in execution, though), and the studios were still figuring out how to do a superhero movie, after the relatively surprising success of Raimi's first Spider-Man, 4 years prior. You can tell that the movies from that era were riding on and hoping for the success of Spider-Man, but weren't embracing the "fantasy" of a superhero genre as much as it had done - cheese and goofiness and all. People want the fantasy, and shows that are more grounded and gritty have to work extra hard for the same recognition.
