Best part of this story is, after it became a hit, the friend came out and said that when Zach was asleep during his food coma, they dealt him all the best cards and waited for him to wake up so they could scare him with fake outrage. haha I feel bad for him but you can NOT break the cardinal rule: DO NOT fall asleep at a party. I’m a white guy that was adopted by my black fam when I was 13. Going to my first cookout was a shocker. I grew up in the two next to where bill burr did in Boston and there was family that married Korean, Vietnamese, and women from south America, so it wasn’t the typical black cook out. It was amazing when my brother brought me to his cousins place in Delaware to meet the rest of the family one summer. The crabcakes is what I remember the most and all the bug bites, which everyone was laughing that they were going after me because I was the only one they could see once it was dark being the only white guy 😃

Whst he didn't realize was, chances hover at around 75%, every container used is designated for THAT SPECIFIC PURPOSE. I literally have containers that are used ONLY for cookouts, and each has a designated purpose, and may God have mercy on your soul if you put lettuce in the onion container or tomatoes in the cheese container. I also buy new condiments for every cookout, which is why I have 3 open bottles of plain yellow mustard in the fridge; I dont use it, but my guests might, and they get a new one every time.

I was uncomfortable, but that was just because I was adjusting to a different culture- first time, I only knew the grandparents (hosts and family head, so I wasn’t just a white guest, I was a special guest). Most recently, it was a catered special event (gave Mema a break from cooking and I got to fix my own plate, lol) for Poppop, who had earned his doctorate and turned 70. I was his assistant (he’s blind) through the doctoral program, so they had a couple surprises to show appreciation (overwhelming in the best way possible). It was a privilege to work with him and to spend time with his family.

I was the only white guy who lived in that apartment and thought it was funny we were both giving each other our little secrets for bbq and we ended up doing this almost every single saturday for the 3 summers i lived there. Food was always great and it was always great vibes sitting drinkin some beers and smokin blunts and bongs throughout the day. Ended up going from us making food and bringing it around to just a community event with the other 6 apartments in the place. Also that dude who initially adked for bbq was such a nice dude he would always get things like a case or 2 of oranges and bring everyone a bag of them and stuff like that, straight up nice dude.

Getting 5 points was called “I’ll nick ya but I won’t cut ya” It was always 10 points to get on the board “ten to get in” 15 points was called “tree tops” 20 points equaled a slap down on the table from way back. When I was young, around 12, we went to my "Aunt Hatties," not my real aunt. Growing up in the south, you either called your elders "Miss or Mister" and their first name. If they were really close friends, they then became Aunt or Uncle. My mom was Aunt Hatties daughters godmother. After the ceremony we went to their house. Aunt Hattie had 5 sisters and their families, and then Grandma and Grandpa. They all lived in the same plot of land. Oh, I should add to where I'm from if you misbehave and your momma wasn't around, but another momma was around. You got spanked from that momma. I was always going over to their houses. We even spent some weekends with them. The difference was they were never ALL of them around at the Sametime. My plate was made for me, and it had pickled pig feet and pickled boiled egg. I had never eaten anything like this before. I tried to eat the pig feet, but it wouldn't go down. Uncle Bob saved me by putting his scraps from his foot on my plate, and he took mine. I was so happy. Then I had to eat the egg. I took a bite, it wasn't for me. I kept thinking i could pocket the egg and dump it later. Uncle Bob again to the rescue lens over and said, "Baby, chop it up and mix it in your potato salad." He didn't like them either. Some 45 years later, I put boiled eggs in my jar of pickle juice and use them in tuna, chicken, egg, or potato salad. It is actually good. But we knew if one of them called us, we better respond. We were taught early on because my dad was military. You didn't disrespect no one color didn't matter. Jf they are older than you you did as they said unless you knew it was wrong. Final words, if you ever get a chance to go to an all black family party go because the food is going to be so good but go hungry. They expect you to try everything.

Being the only white person at an event is usually really fun and mind expanding, as long as you do what this guy did: Be open minded, humble, say yes to things you don't understand and willing to learn, and ALWAYS respect the oldest woman in the room as though you life depended on it. I lived across from a Mosque and I started celebrating Ramadan (I'm an atheist, but spending a month being reminded of why you should be thankful is probably something we all should do) just so I could work up an appetite, spend time with cool people and a lot of amazing food I didn't know how to make.

Had an alcoholic neighbor. He got drunk and went walking into the black apartment complex in our neighborhood. His wife came to get my brothers to go get Mr.B...we fully expected him to be accosted....nah, 3/4 of the kids there went to school with Mr. B's kids....they knew he was a Bing drinker. They took care of him, feed him, feed us and gave us a ride home so his drunk as didn't have to walk.
