Nice to see this beautiful Tennessee Walker. Mine was banned from trail rides at the stable because his walk was so big it made the others want to jog. (I like jogging a typical horse, but they liked plodding along.) He was a great horse: gentle but with spirit, versatile and willing.

Unbelievable! 😮 teach their horses to walk. I would contest that somehow. Please don't accept.
@shelm-b8p8 ай бұрын
@@SusanSheehan-k5zI agree with you that the horse should not be banned, but I can tell you that we have 2 Tennessee Walkers in our barn and they can’t go out with another horse. Same issue, any other horse needs to trot when they just walk.

I have been told walking horses are not good trail partners with regular gaited horses for that reason too

Derrick looks like a Rocky Mountain more than a TWH. He's quite a bit more trotty than Ruger was and neither are good examples of a good WH. Derrick is trotty with no looseness or stride behind with straight short pasterns behind as well. He is probably RMountain. He is gorgeous.

Definitely a rocky based upon color, conformation and gait. They tend to be stocky very easy keepers and fairly willing. Great trail horses, but they are prone to founder if they don't get ridden enough and are on decent pasture. Rocky's were developed in the hardscrabble steep hills of Kentucky where they have to keep easy. Walking horses move differently even at the walk. They overstride with the back feet and have more sway.

Stunning colour! In UK native pony breeds, this colour does pop up regularly (but not commonly) in Highlands and Shetlands, but is _very_ unusual in other breeds. Like another poster mentioned, I can't quite get my head round 'gaits'. The only gaited horse I'm even vaguely familiar with is the Icelandic horse.

Has the coloring of the Rocky Mountain horse (which is a fun breed), but has the size of the TN Walker. Rocky Mtn horses are 14-16 hands per the breed standard. TW can be taller. But overlap height-wise. So really he could be either. But the color is definitely typical of the RMH.

As a young rider I was told this story. I truly don't know if it's accurate or not, but I hope it's true. A dressage trainer wanted to get accurate proof of the difference a good rider made to a horse's performance. So he took to a skilled and experienced horse to the local weighbridge along with a balanced rider and an unbalanced rider. Then he had each rider work the horse for a few minutes then weighed each horse/rider combo. On the same day, in the same tack, within a few minutes of each other. The total weight of the balanced rider combo was significantly less than the total weight of the unbalanced rider combo. Only difference was the rider, and the way that rider rode the horse. I was told the difference was several kilos - too much to attribute to water evaporation through sweat or weight of manure passed in the time between weighings.

How close to the edge of the horses mouth do you set your bits?
@timandersonhorsetraining8 ай бұрын
My preference is very slightly like 1/8" from the corners if the bars allow that. Then the horse can pick the bit up and hold it where it is comfortable but not so loose that it is irritating the horse. That is as long as the bars and corners of the mouth align correctly. They don't always. I had a horse recently that if I would have put the bit there it would have been hitting the K9 teeth.

Just missed this live. Hard to see his colour on screen. Is he a silver bay, or silver dapple? You mention sorrel (what we call chestnut?) but his mane with the darker roots looks more like a he has a silver Z gene in him? Silver over bay gives a reddish coat, darker dapple points and similar mane/tail which has sooty, darker roots. Silver over black gives the chocolate dapple look with the same flaxen with darker sooty roots. I had a silver dapple Northland Bush Pony once. I named him Fig. Turned out to be a useful wee ride/drive horse. I think the silver in NZ comes originally from the shetland pony and/or the welsh pony. In Aussie it is known as "taffy" and I believe the gene first entered the Australia via a 19th century circus pony stallion who was a popular sire. You are right, he is a well put together horse, perhaps a tad straight in the hind leg?, pity about the movement!! I cannot bring myself to appreciate the movement of a gaited horse. They just look abnormal and awkward when they move. Pacing dogs do the same thing to me!! Will be interested to see how he comes along. I've watched horses loose on stock trucks and they all seem to choose to stand at a 45 degree angle with the head/front end facing backwards on the angle, not forwards. They also have their heads lowered which I find interesting since most trailer designs do not allow for this aspect. it makes sense that they are designed to have lowered heads for eating so their natural balance would be there, and it would help the sinuses drain also.

The horse's back is horizontal. I definitely think that a larger person, football player or couch potato still is too much. If you technically, scientifically look at the data just 5 minutes after a rider has been on a horse's back, it shoes that its already under stress. Then there's proper saddle fitting. And on and on. Horse's were never meant to ride. Humans imposed this on them.
