I love your method here its LITERALY gain trust, then train same thing works with dogs, you first get trust if needed, then you train I use negative on my dog top, same way pressure and release I actually did it to stop her from pulling on her Haiti head harness....yeah needless to say a pop in response to slight pulling stops pulling after 5 times repeat multiple occasions and BAM no more pulling, also with dogs once older 6-9 months + deppending on the dog then you set em up to the bad behavior and do the negative and BAM the dog gets the hint do it multiple times with a few items and unlile a horse you dont gotta do it with every item but deffintly a few to get the command/behavior solid

A horse’s thought process differs from it’s reacting to stimuli. Range horses follow “flight or fight” in open spaces, but when confined to smaller spaces (just like a domesticated horse) they will display F I C A, fear-ignore-curiosity-acceptance. This is their “school” of learning how to think about a situation. I find this display of behavior profound in figuring out a horse’s strengths and weaknesses. Individual demeanor based on genetics and environmental exposure will influence the amount of time it takes to transition from one stage to the next. Equus is an active work of art in progress! Hats off to you for embarking on such a worthwhile cause and much needed help in managing the wild herds of America. The fact that she is dependent on you as her sole food source recreates the opportunity for bonding that happens between a foal and its mother, whether natural or adopted. The long trip and weight loss will be in your favor in this regard.

With my first mustang - and second and third - I'd just go out and sit by or in the round pen with them to read a book. Just ignore the horse completely and move naturally, and invariably they got curious and comfortable with it. My first one also wouldn't take treats until she saw me eat them first, the latter two learned to eat them by watching the first. The first one never would eat carrots, though... my dog loves carrots, so she'd take them and give them to the dog. Instead, her favorites were bananas (with or without the peel), cinnamon gummy bears and old-fashioned peppermint 'puff' candies'. She insisted on trying everything else she saw me eat, too, but she never did like oranges no matter how many times she insisted on trying them. Personality really makes a difference with them. My first two were chosen because I liked their attitude and confidence, and both were hands-on within three days. The third... my father chose because she was pretty, and the BLM threw in for $25 to go with the second because they couldn't get anyone to adopt her. Hare-brained red-headed pain in the... well, suffice to say that the red dun took a few weeks, rather than three days, to be reliably hands-on. Fortunately, she was later placed with someone who was a perfect match for her, and they still adore each other. Sometimes, it's finding the right person for the horse. It's not a generic fit.

Oh she's so lovely! It's wild how such a small movement like adjusting your neck spooked her.. Makes sense that she's from Nevada - drove through back when I was a kid and we saw a herd near the road, almost all we're super dark colors like her! Black or very dark bay. Weather you went to her or she went to you, first contact was made. And she absolutely knew it was you when she pushed on your arm. I doubt you’ll ever do two exactly the same, but you will find what works for you. Not sure it matters which road you take as long as you get to the destination.

You can’t always assume based on what you see on the screen. There are multiple mustangs here, but they get separated for training sessions. This was also her first day here, and she had traveled across the country, so I wanted to make sure she was protected and able to catch up on food and water before having to worry about herd dynamics

What about moving around a little more during the initial waiting period? Like tap your hand on your leg, read stuff on your phone, shift positions, etc. Although the initial wait for her to approach you & eat might be slightly longer, she would already be conditioned to have a bit less fear of slight movements.

That part comes with time. I can say what we have done and do is grab a folding chair and if the horse is feral (run in from a large ranch at 2 to 4 yrs) or a mustang we grab a book and sit there and read for hours and hours and hours so the horse gets as adjusted to our presence and movements as you see this mare already is to the chickens who walk through her pen. We don't expect touch, but they eventually do become curious and you simply ignore them. They may smell you or your hair or even nibble you a bit, but you want them to be comfortable with a human being around all of the time flipping pages, changing legs, shifting weight, maybe even stretch, etc.. In this case she really wanted touch over desensitization like I explained with grab a long book and go sit out there as long as you can. Just different goals in the short term. Need both in the long term.

I found a mare once that had been allowed to run wild with Her Herd mates on a 500-acre horse ranch. She was 5 years old without any human contact when I purchased her. I use to sit under a tree reading a book in her pasture. I would also lure her with bearded oat hay and alfalfa. Her name was Misty Morning Magic, and she became one of my favorite horses. I find it's better to gentle a horse than to break its spirit. Magic for short. When I first saw her, she slowly trotted through low-lying ground fog. Slowly appearing like magic on that misty morning. My beautiful strawberry roan horse

I can assure you, as I do this type of training as well, she was fully aware of your hand the first time. (She is aware of everything in the pen by now and outside the pen that she can hear, see, and smell too). Your smell was there and on the other hay put out. On the water that was put out. Horses read intentions and body language so she knew you weren't meaning to catch her or anything and your reaction to not chase her when she runs means you are not a predator. Her curiosity is very high so never punish it and let her smell all of the ropes, halters, and gear and she will be very accepting of it. Curious horses are good!!! Mustangs are more aware than any regular horse bred in a barn because their awareness mattered for their safety. You change the method per horse based on what the horse is telling you. . ."fearful", "dominant", "submissive", "follower", "leader", etc. and this let's you know who you are dealing with so you can accommodate better as a partner.

I've been watching Steve Young's videos who works with difficult to handle horses. He discourages feeding horses from your hand. His believe is that it makes the horse dominant. Obviously you have experience with these wild horses. I've heard the best horses have some wild Mustang mixed in. It's said that they have more horse sense. It's going to be interesting to see how you get the bridle on her for the first time.

Steve Young works in the UK with horses who have been handled since birth as they do not have wild horses there and every horse is microchipped to show where it came from. Steve Young's advice and this is a general barn rule is because horses that are incredibly comfortable with people and then are fed treats from the hand can learn to expect them and become very pushy and fingers can look a lot like carrots so I've seen really nice lesson horses bite kids when they would never have done that if a person had not been over feeding them with treats. People from riders to owners also don't understand behavioral science so a treat or positive positive reinforcement like food can only happen when you mark a certain wanted behavior. If the horse does a task and you then choose to reward that task w/o the horse being pushy into your space or attempting to go into your pockets then it's safe to reward. I would say 99% of the equine people in the industry don't know when it's OK to treat and when not to and they give treats because the horse is pretty when the horse is actually invading their space and being disrespectful and the person doesn't realise it. The rule of thumb is for people to not treat because so many do it wrong and reinforce bad habits.

my favorite thing with new horses and building that trust was just taking naps by the pin and pile of hay......i would go from sitting or napping at the outside of the pin right by the hay pile and the water bucket to leaning up against the water in side the round pin till the point the horse would start sniffing and nudging me after that things were pretty easy even if that stage could take up to a month it led to alot less fights when it came to saddle training because the horse already knew i wasn't trying to hurt it.

This program was and is a great idea.Its just sad we didn't realize how hard working with them would be .For a spell of time because in truth people didn't work hard enough and in some ways it was a fad,and the results weren't as productive as B. L M wanted,they didn't stop the program,but felt more justified to cull the herds for meat production.Whatvyour are doing has far more potential to help the herds and spark progress in saving them.Don't ever forget that,because this is something we have to get right.

Go back and review the mare’s behavior and posture with both the goat (2:12) and the chicken (4:18) and again at (4:50) notice how quickly her reaction, or lack of, changed with the chickens. This mare is a quick learner. It may be advantageous to have her watch how other animals interact with you. I have found clearing chakras each night, and each day engaging with calm but open energy pathways will speed the process in communicating with wild, feral, or abused horses (or animal).
