Confidence is critical when riding though and very important to build again after a fall. I’m 54 and have definitely fallen a few times, including broken ribs earlier this year. Im dead because my passion is dangerous. I take the risk every time my foot sets into my stirrup. Deep breaths and sit up. Breath the same breaths the horse breaths. Have your heart beat with the horses hoof beats. Think about why your on a horse, why you love the horse, why you are devoted hundreds of hours to taking hard riding lessons and pushing limits. Keep doing what your doing and things will only get better. One thing you might want to talk to Fiona about is maybe getting Stella a short shank jointed western curb for going on trails with. It has a snaffle mouth but a curb and longer shanks for just a little extra stopping power. Just a thought. Happy trails from Arkansas.

You can't even blame falling off(idk if this is after you fell) because I've fallen off and yet once I was able to get back on, I was fine. Your horse can tell if you are scared. Just clam down, stop yelling at Stella, and enjoy the ride. You can't own a horse if you are going to be this nervous. Simple as that

Laura, i think you should take a deep breath and chill out. Horses can tell when you are tense and they will use that to their advantage. You need to focus on relaxing your muscles and calming your mind. This will reflect well on soph as well! :)

(Sorry i always comment twice, people always tell me i have too much to say lol!) One very important art to learn is the art of laughing it off! It might not sound very effective but even a fake smile can do a lot in terms of confidence! When you laugh your brain goes “oh wait that means I’m happy! I’m doing great!” And it helps relieve some of the built up stress and panic and get your brain back into focus-mode! The reason why she probably cantered up the hill, is because it's much easier to trot/canter upwards for them, especially if they're older. You probably also got a little spooked when she started to go up, and you felt the pushes from her butt, and it caused you to squeeze. It's alright, my little five year old's ( horse, lol ) first trail ride consisted of me being held/ponied loosely with the mecate, and I got so anxious. He's a saddlebred too, and so when I got super amped and nervous, he just got excited and wanted to go explore ahead of everyone else. It happens to the best of us 👍🏼

@8trackheartbeat5 жыл бұрын
Horses a lot of the time will want to trot/canter up a hill because it's easier on them to get the momentum. Since Stella was just doing that to get up the hill, if it's easier, just remember that when going up hills, and get ready to hold her back, or make her do the serpentine pattern up or be behind a slower horse. But in all honesty, she is a ROCKSTAR on the trail! She just needs you to focus on leading, and staying calm and confident. She seems pretty at easy/comfortable out on the trail :) My horse is a speed demon, so I'm always 100% focused when trail riding, so when approaching hills I always make sure to just allow him to trot and keep him in a trot so he doesn't try to canter. Also, lean forward up hills and lean back down hills to help her stay balanced. :)

Laura your a great rider. But screaming is not going to help your case with Stella. You need to take a lesson from Gabby. She has control over her horse and isn't scared of a frog. No hate

Don’t worry Laura, it’s normal to be a little afraid when your trying new things. But don’t worry! You and Stella can work it out together, it will help build more trust and a bigger bond. I don’t mean to sound bossy, or like an online trainer, but I recommend doing some groundwork with her, like leading her around the arena, or making her stay and dropping the lead rope, picking it up and asking her to come without a tug. I find it works really well, it makes the horse know your in charge and they trust you. But, don’t let the girls do it, you should take time on your own, I bet it would work out really well for YOU and Stella. Btw, your hand placement looks great! Keep up the good work! xxx. -grace

Laura, I was taught that even when your scared to be on a horse you still need to be calm and confident. Horses can sense when your scared and that causes them to fell scared, so you need to talk to Stella let her know that everything is fine and that she is a good girl no matter what, that encourages her to feel confident.

Oh Laura, you did have me worried for a while, only because when you get so worried and start panicking things can go wrong. Don’t misunderstand me, I do understand your anxieties and the fact that most of your riding experiences are in the relative safety of an arena. Personally, I think at the moment this is perhaps step too far for you, having to think about yourself and also the kids ( Sophia in particular). Stella didn’t look like she was doing anything, other than wanting to get on with it, she seemed to behave perfectly, although vlogging can’t help much either ( not sure if you were holding a camera at times), which means trying to steer and control Stella with one hand, so much harder. You certainly have to keep your wits about you on the trail for the terrain and low hanging branches etc and best you keep to the well defined paths for now. Having said all of this, I’m glad you’re all in one piece and hope it hasn’t put you off. Just try to ride more Laura, get up on Stella and ride her at home, the more practice you can get, the more it will help you 😊 I really shouldn’t have, but it did make me laugh too, at least Gabby and Kayleigh seemed to be enjoying themselves and looks like a lot more to come 😧 ps I do know how hard this must have been for you Laura and how hard you were trying not to get too emotional, so even though there were signs of it, you clearly contained a lot too and at least you got up on Stella and ventured out 👍

Stella literally was an angel. No spook. She went through everything. She never once acted like she was going to misbehave. My nerves did get the better of me at first. Having an experienced leader absolutely gives me confidence and knowing I was it qas terrifying. At one point when stella centered up a hill kailey yelled at gabby and gabby was ready to grab her reins. They were literally incredible. I'm definitely not ready to be in charge on a horse. I can't keep the kids back because of my fears. That trail was way too advanced. I swear so many more people would have been terrified. The hills were steep, huge and rocky. The path way overgrown. It was insane really. We won't go back to that one but I will try again!

Oh I do agree Mel... Laura the more you can ride the safer you'll feel, because you'll have a more secure seat... Horses always like to go faster up steep hills, because it's easier for them, try not to worry, they're not running away... Going out on the trail is so different from riding in an arena, much more exciting (and sometimes scarier too!) Just take it all at your own pace, you have open fields and a nice small trail at home to ride if that feels safer... I think you did brilliantly on Stella, she seems a calm trail horse from what we can see...and Sophia seemed really chilled by the end!
@melbowell56015 жыл бұрын
Sarah Mason all true Sarah, I grew up mainly learning to ride in the open, so I guess it is quite different to the confines of an enclosed arena and you really do have to learn to control your horse ( if that makes sense). I feel the same about Stella too, she seems so good on the trail and happy. That was a big ask going out all together ( all credit to Laura for doing it) particularly when you’re not completely familiar with the trail etc. I agree with you, perhaps Laura can just start to venture out round the fields where they live on the trail and get used to steering etc out in the open. Not quite sure what happened at the beginning and why Sophia was upset to ride Finn, but she got on and off they went, so that’s good, again though they all have very limited experience of riding in the big outdoors and horses can have a knack of taking you under those low trees lol. A horse I used to ride was 17.3hh and the amount of times I was hanging round his neck to get under things lol, but you do have to be careful, a few times I whacked my head ( good job I wear a helmet) as there was a low branch hijdden in the foliage 😂 I’d never get off him unless I really had to as I couldn’t mount from the ground ( but bless him he’s was so good at standing by gates, tree stumps, picnic tables etc for me to get back on). He was so well trained that when we got back to the yard he’d automatically stop at the gate so I could clamber off. What’s so good is all their horses seem to like going out on the trail and often horses perk up, so much fun. Yes they can be a bit spooky at times, but at least they can get off the road to ride, such a bonus. I was secretly thinking though that I bet Gabby and Kayleigh would love to venture out in their own 😊

@@melbowell5601 Yes, when I learnt to ride as a kid we went hacking a lot too and you get to experience controlling your horse or pony in amongst a group in the open (very different to riding in the arena!). For these guys I'm guessing it feels such an unfamiliar (and maybe for some, scary) thing... And unexpected things can happen of course (like low branches, mounting via logs, spooking, or steep hills!). On Friday I was riding out when another horse and rider from my stables came cantering up behind me to keep me company. I was walking along in my own little world on the buckle LOL, my pony heard the thundering hooves and shot off and I was left with my washing line reins up to my chin Haha... but it's all part of the fun / excitement! I think Gabby and Kailey would have a blast on their own (I was thinking that too), maybe Laura and Sophie could go off on a slower, more gentle ride!

You should NEVER get off your horse if they are misbehaving. You always need to fight them yourself so that they don’t learn that behavior as a good thing. If you were that scared you should not have recorded, I know you wanted to but to be focused on a camera instead of your horse. Never squeal when a horse takes off, I know it’s tempting but you need to stay calm and quiet to keep your horse calm.

Hey Laura, Gabby, Sam and Sophie. The best way to stop Stella is to lean back and if that doesn't work then pull her head to the side so that she goes in a circle. I love you videos. I love your determination Laura and Sophie, you can do whatever you set your mind to. Don't use your bit as your control but your body language

When your on trail and your horse likes to eat the grass there is something that can help with that it is like a leather string that hooks to the pole or top of bridle and it comes to the saddle horn which is perfect cause you are in a western saddle so it might help comment if you think so it can keep their head up too by the way
@azuldelgado835 жыл бұрын
I used to have the same problem, I was afraid of riding . Horses are intelligent and they know who is riding therefore they take advantage of you if they feel that you afraid and weak and lack confidence. You have to try and bond more with Stella. You could lunge her or ride bareback or alone. Teach Stella that she is not in control.

Gabby is the best rider in the group! Keep it up! But... the grownup needs to have a lot more in control! You need to stay calm! Not crying or screaming! Also when your on a trail ride your horse can’t understand why you’re saying “NO!!!” When your bumping into tree branches. She doesn’t know what is going on up on top of her! So get more training in the arena before your next trail ride! I’d say if you want to be better on the next trail ride do mina-mum month of good lessons and tell your instructor what you need to work on! Then you should be good to go!
