I worked for an Inland Revenue collector of taxes office from 1984 to 1988. How bailiffs are deployed seems to have changed a great deal since then. It must be remembered that this is a television programme and the producers want a good story and so are going to use the most extreme cases. It is notable that none of the defaulters seem to notice that a television crew is surrounding them. Distraint by a bailiff was always a threat made to non-payers but was always a last resort. Bailiffs charged for their services and often the goods distrained were of little value. They would have to be sold at auction and the amount recovered was often a fraction of the tax owed. Therefore we would have accepted any offer to pay by instalments in order to avoid using bailiffs. Bailiffs were only called in after repeated attempts to come to an arrangement which would include telephone calls and then home visits. Bailiffs tended to be called when either the defaulter refused outright to pay anything or when they failed to engage with us in any way. Bailiffs did tend to act as a deterrent as when one business was visited the the bailiffs, several other companies in the area paid up. Bailiffs were only used when the only alternative was to say "never mind we'll forget about what you owe."

That blue Mazda 616 would be worth serious cash now good ones go £9k mad to think it was worth £100 tops in 85 To think 5 years later Thatcher got a bloody nose as the polltax riots of 1990 exploded at the unfairness of Tory rule and austerity . Im guessing even the younger Bailiff is probably passed now .

People looked older back then. So if the younger bailiff was 30 back in 85 he would be 69 now in 2024. A very achievable age.

I'm in debt myself - The thing to do is before it gets to this stage, is contact your debtors and see if you can come to some arrangement - If it's an official company, they are usually ameniable to negotiation,. Failing that, you can go to go to citzens' advice, they can negotiate on your behalf.

This video reminds me how harsh the mid-80s where when I was a teenager..for example no concession for that family with a disabled child which is such a shame and very sad indeed..however at the end of the day, there has to be accountability and responsibility..it all boils down to people mis-managing their financial affairs 😮 and not alerting authorities of financial problems to seek resolutions or work out a payment plan in case of job loss or income changes.. rather than waiting for big burley no-nonsense balliffs to knock on your door 😮 otherwise it’s the ultimate shame, embarrassment and humiliation to have your home items taken away 😢 in my book, leading a financially peaceful life is about watching every penny / pound of expenditure 👍 which helps me to have a sound night’s sleep 😮 just don’t owe anybody any money simply live within your means and don’t buy anything on credit ..On a positive note, I used to love listening to those easy listening musical tones of the First Tuesday TV programme🙏

I think that's a bit harsh? Some people do just take the Mickey. There have been times, politically, when debt is encouraged and times when the bailiffs are allowed to be more heavy handed. But that first family were hopeless. First the cars belonged to someone else then he was giving one as part payment,then it was a pig in a poke anyway. Then he said he was paying a mortgage, but it was a council house,he told the bailiffs that half the stuff in the house hadn't been paid for,then said they'd just had central heating put in. The debt was supposed to be two years old yet she was complaining 'they' hadn't given enough time and explanation! Using the child to try and elicit sympathy wasn't very nice either. There has to be an end at some point,if not the threat of bailiffs,then what?

Thank you for loading all these, I'm steadily working my through them! So interesting, hasn't the world changed. Nothing to do with immigration, which I'm getting really sick of seeing blamed for everything from the weather onwards 😂 It's us..we need to take responsibility. My daughter is always asking me why my generation messed everything up. It's us,in our 40's and 50's who didn't teach the next generation how to cook,or parent their children. Didn't take them to church or read them stories, they were given TVs in their bedrooms and ready meals. The nicest things in life that everyone moans about the absence of just weren't passed on. We can hardly complain when we are part of the problem. People don't want to put in the effort to make a community,so there isn't one.

@@Taylor23890yes but it’s not the overriding reason for all the issues the country faces today. True. My mum always told us to pay our mortgage first, then all the bills. We could always survive on eggs, beans, bacon, 'whatever' on toast or homemade soup, which is still cheap and nutritious. She was right. Homelessness should be the last choice. These people admitted to not paying their debts, even after negotiating lower monthly payments, in some cases. We've had our really tough times, financially ,I know how hard it is. We followed her advice,and we both worked any available overtime, and we got through . Why, if wages were so low, did they have big families?. We could afford to provide, and care for, 2 children and that's what we had. Nothings changed, it seems. Personal responsibility is non existent. (Not including the people ,who are being evicted from private rental homes, with 'no blame 'evictions)
@scooby2142
@scooby2142 3 ай бұрын
@@jacqueline8559 MY PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY was to never have children and very much stay out of relationships. I worked for over 40 years solid, working all the overtime I could stand, but I never could get a mortgage. I was renting from a private landlord who would constantly force other lodgers onto me - who all left without paying the water, electricity, gas or council tax. I had to borrow to keep that roof over my head when the bailiffs came round because all those debtors were under my name at that address. Then I was trapped there because I could not afford to move out. Gradually the bank wore me down with loan after loan after loan before the loan ever got fully paid - and the way they did that was to suddenly BAR my overdraft and account and force me into the bank to sign ANYTHING I COULD to free up my current account. You get off your high horse LADY. You know nothing about circumstances.
