This was an incident waiting to happen. 1981 should have been the time where people thought ‘ hey there’s something not right with this terrace ‘. I’d been to Hillsborough and stood on the Leppings Lane terrace 2 months before the disaster to see my team Manchester United play Sheffield Wednesday in a First Division game. My Dad and I were directed to the corner pen, the one by the banked terrace in the corner, around 2.45pm. The central tunnel was closed off by police and stewards at that time. You could see where problems could occur if the situation was in place.

Fascinating documentary. I remember watching the tragic events unfold live on the TV. The game was being transmitted live on RTÉ Television here iin Ireland.

I was at a mates Dads house eating our dinner in front of the tele waiting to watch the game. I remember saying "Oh here we go again!", after seeing people spill out onto the pitch. Very quickly, it became obvious it wasn't what we thought it was. 😢 ✌️❤

Probably one of the biggest factors in the disaster happening was the lack of police cordons on the way to the Leppings Lane turnstiles in 1989. In 1988, the Liverpool fans were stopped 3 or 4 times on the way to those turnstiles, checking tickets, but it also slowed the fans progress towards the turnstiles, so they didn’t all converge on them at once. If that had happened in 1989, I don’t think a disaster would have happened. I’ve seen CCTV footage of those turnstiles from the game in 1988, and by 3pm the turnstile area was virtually empty.

Also the roadworks on the motorway held up the Liverpool fans and they wouldn’t delay kick off by 15 mins

Duckenfield saw everything from that control box and he didn't give orders to open the gates on the pens because he knew he was the one that gave the order to open Gate C which caused the surge. He panicked. He knew he had made a vital error. But he lied immediately and said it was the fans that broke open Gate C and he maintained that lie for years. Had he acted as soon as he saw the crushing I believe most of the departed would still be here. He should never have been in charge of this game. He had no experience. This was a disaster waiting to happen from the date the fixture was decided. He was just one of many culpable in this.

My uncle was living in Birmingham in 1981 and a guy he worked with was a wolves fan. They went to that semi final and he said it was clear that something like this was likely to happen again.

A Pre-health & Safety assessment and planning 24 hours hours before with police cordons and crowd control outside and crowd filtering inside by the tunnel area, communication to all officers from the control box that had a clear view of the pens with the naked eye and CCTV is all what was needed to avoid this. If this was down to normal security operatives and official football associates managing the crowd management, there would have been people jailed for this but because it was police, it was covered up and nobody to blame except the fans.

To me, *sheer* incompetence all round! And I am also *not* saying all the fans were blameless either. Someone *still* could have had the sense to back out. *RIP, and eventual peace and justice* for the 97 dead, the same goes for their loved ones. My heart *also* goes for the near 800 of those injured and everyone else affected that day.

Just *do not* go in if you could see how much it was getting *noticeably* overcrowded and thus unsafe! Not just for others' safety, but also for yours also. A good amount of people that was let in arriving late also died.

@@SuperTed19021 A 'human wave' like that with zero crowd control would be very hard to get out of (as we know - the crush could easily have happened just outside the stadium), also the most lethal zones in the stand would be occupied by fans getting in fairly early

@@SuperTed19021 The ones at the back couldn't see what was happening at the front. And a lot of those at the back got swept into the crowd because it was surging. It would have been like being caught in a tidal wave or a landslide. The ones at the back very likely only knew what was happening when people were trying to escape near them or the police were hauling and pushing them back out the way.

Was it 26 yrs it took for justice. 96 deaths no one punished. Lots of lies by police and newspapers. Eventually all came out 26 yrs later after mother's and father's fought for the truth. The senior police in charge are retired full pension living in maghull hopefully fully shamed by what came out in court. He should be in prison along with a few others. Thank god the families got the truth years of hard work raising funds by the city they got to the truth.

Gate c was opened and 5,000 fans rushed towards the tunnel to the central pens. The police guarding it shit themselves seeing the marauding crowd coming their way and ran for their lives. This left the tunnel open and the central pens were already full. The late comers all entered the pens and crushed the early birds to death. The sheer force of 5,000 people being in a cage made for 2,000. Peoples faces were jammed against each other until they passed out from a lack of oxygen. As they fell to the floor their bodies crushed by the feet of the standing. The police who ran for their lives should have had the courage to stand their ground and block the tunnel, and redirected those marauding fans to the side pens which were empty. None of this would have happened. When there is only one person at a time coming through a turnstile it is simple to redirect them but when 5,000 are let in at once it can be intimidating.

Definitely making some shite up here, for instance 30 of the 97 dead came through gate c once opened by the pigs , whom were not early birds .the enquiry found there were no attempt to close the central pens once gate c was opened, police were not even present at the tunnel that lead to the central pens , no flee from 'marauding ' fans😂. Truth is police viewed football fans as scum that needed heavy handed control, safety was secondary

@@samgiamarelos4524 I am not blaming the late comers. I am blaming the fact that the tunnel entrance to the central pens behind the goal was not manned to prevent overcrowding. If you are letting one person every 5 seconds in through the turnstiles it is simple to redirect fans to the outer pens. When you open a huge gate and let thousands pour through it you have a scene like in the serengeti plains. Animals all rushing through and following each other blindly like sheep. The obvious path was straight through the tunnel to the central pens which were already full. The first mistake was not delaying the kick off until all those fans got in. If announcements were being made outside the leppings lane entrance informing fans that the match was being delayed to a later time there would be no panic. When you see thousands of people in front of you and you know the match kicks off in 20 minutes you are going to panic and worry about missing the match. Then if you are going to open a main gate you ensure there are ample police in position to direct those fans to the outside pens. This was not done. The facts are there to see, people who were at the front of the pens who came early were squashed into the fence and you can see the blue faces in some footage with tongues sticking out embedded in the fencing already dead. Predominantly those towards the front are the most vulnerable. Sure, some of the late comers reported being carried through the tunnel in surges of fans causing them to come through to the pens actually facing backwards. Some of those people fell to the ground and were trampled to death. Finally, any gates at the front of the pens onto the pitch area should be manned by police and opened up in case of an emergency. This would have prevented those poor souls from being crushed into the fence. They could have let the fans out that way and led them to the vacant pens, even if needed stop the match whilst that process happens. Some fans reported that they were screaming at the police to do this but the police ignored them until it was too late.

Were you not paying attention? Or are you just ignorant of what 'marauder' actually means? They were not 'marauding' fans. They were people in a stressful environment who were already being crushed in the under-managed queues. The person in charge handled it badly, they didn't instruct the tunnel to be closed off and barricaded before the gate was opened to let them in. The police did not run off in fear of the crowd, they weren't there to begin with. Had that happened then the fans would have filtered off into the other pens. Don't you dare try and label these people as 'marauders' because they were anything but.

@@AFiasco Have you ever been to a boxing day sale? The doors open and thousands rush in trying to get the bargains. Similar scenario, a big gate opens and thousands rush in trying to get a good position to watch the football. The police or stewards are always on that tunnel which is not stressful when one person at a time is entering a turnstile. But when a wall of people are coming their way they shit themselves and flee the scene. I know all this because I have worked as security at sporting stadiums. As I said if the police or stewards would have closed the gate on tunnel it could have been avoided but abandoning their post was condemning those people already in the pens to a certain death. It was poor organisation but the match should have been postponed by half an hour to ensure there was no panic amongst the fans fearing missing the kick off. There is nothing worse than a herd of anything be it people or animals rushing in the one direction. The final problem is not having a gate at the front which will open from the inside to allow the people at the front to escape the crush. Safer to allow people to spill onto the pitch rather than be crushed to death. You can always redirect those people to the empty pens. I always suspected the police decided to abandon the tunnel entrance deliberately to cause problems for the chief policeman who they did not respect because it was his first match in charge.

Well you really don't know that "not one fan had the sense to back out and leave". Have you ever been in a fatal crush? I have back in 1988 at the Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donington. Me and my friend were caught up in it. The ground was muddy and people were slipping and falling. As the band (Guns n Roses as it happened) played the crowd from the back surged forward and two young men were killed. The people wouldn't have known. Now that was in a field with no pens to keep people in. We managed to scramble our way out and the deaths were kept quiet until the end of the event. But I've never gone to the front again in the countless festivals I've been to since. Hillsborough has been proven to be the absolute fault of the Police. Sadly because of the lies and corruption instigated by them, the government and gutter press it took decades for the truth to finally be admitted. I highly recommend Phil Scraton's book "Hillsborough: The Truth" if you're interested. He lid off of the festering scab of corruption that followed the disaster.

Fantastic book all should read to learn how corrupt the police were. How hard the families fought for the truth. That ducansfield the senior in charge should be in prison and not in his bungalow retired on full pension...Margret thatchers friend he told her it was under control and it was the fans to blame...what a shit.
