Update: Year three post-pandemic has been just as challenging as year one! After 1.5 years of distance learning and having a “grace period” in terms of behavior/academic expectations students are off the charts. In my district, we could not fail kids last year so when the first report cards came out this year students were shook that they would be held accountable. Definitely made the teachers who care seem “mean”. I promise it’s only uphill from here!

@@SocialStudies401 I'm a senior sociology major and I took a course called Sociology of Education and it went into detail about how biased the institution can truly be. Whether that be unfairness of charter schools, school district gerrymandering, the achievement gap, etc. After that class I've become interested in the social aspect of teaching and learning. What I see in you that I find so warming is how eager you are to improve as a teacher and grow an understanding for students of all sociocultural backgrounds. When you mentioned reading the book "Why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria" it warmed my heart to see an educator doing work to increase the breadth of understanding you have about the children you're fostering. There's nothing specific really but I'd love to hear your takeaways from that book, and any other thoughts you may have about culture related issues in the classroom.

+Teach US History ...... And then the student may get angry and snap at you or the admin and here you are left with a referral to admin situation on your hands . However , as far as the disruptions go , keeping the cell phone until the end of the period = fair .... at least in my book because it doesn't exactly connect you the teacher to being the enemy in the mind of the student much . It may clip some olive branches off but you are still sending them the message and those olive branches will have grown back by the end of the school year when all of the academic pressure is off the table if you will . However , take it from me , a former SPED student with autism , there is more than one way to cause disruption . If the lesson is being taught in way that does not work for the student or if a student's head is full disruption is bound to happen . Hopefully this will lead you to some things for your teacher tool box in the future . Keep growing and learning . - Dwight

Hey Dwight! Thanks for your perspective, I truly appreciate the time and though you put into your reply. I did gain a new perspective! couldn’t agree more, I find the lessons thats do not go over well are not meeting the needs of all my students. That’s where you start seeing behavioral concerns, like phones. Priority number one is always creating lesson that are differentiated and meets the kids where they are. Sometimes even with all the support given, kids will still have a hard time self regulating and knowing when to put the phone down. I think my school in particular, had a culture of phones being acceptable. Huge disservice to the kids. But I get it, a school with mostly new teachers, it hard learning how to be an effective teacher that first year. This year is going way better already for myself!

Technology is the future for Our Youth and really had it not been for educational technology of my lifetime i would have stopped learning or never learned anything a long time ago . By the way , have your students or anyone ever told you that you have a beautiful smile and hair ? If not do you mind if i am the first person ? Because you do have a beautiful smile and hair . @@djthereplay you’re right, technology is the future! Too many teachers fight tech in the classroom, but we have to use it as a learning tool. I think the incoming younger generation of teachers (students who grew up with smart phones) will bring wonderful teach ideas into the classroom. Can’t wait to learn from them. Hi! I start teaching in the fall and I need some advice on lesson planning! How do you lesson plan (aka, what works for you)? How far out do you prep your lessons?

Hi Ashley! In both middle school and elementary school I use a paper planer and then write my lesson ideas on sticky notes. This way if something comes up like a surprise assembly, fire drill, or I want to change my plans, it is simple to readjust the plans to the correct days. When I was student teaching, I wrote all my lessons out on google doc that I made into a calendar, then shared my plans with my cooperating teacher. I planned far in advance as a student teacher and in great detail, always a week or two out. Today, I write one or two words on a single sticky and call that my plan! Typically I map out the full quarter with a rough idea, then brake down into individual daily plans for a half a week out. Of course all lessons are thought out and matched to objectives/standards.

Hello! My apologies, I am not knowable in this topic. If you have edu experience in one country hopefully there is reciprocity in another. Each US State has their own teaching requirements. I would search “teach in US programs” that help find candidates placements/navigate the systems. Good luck!

@@SimpleHistoryindetail Historian tend to have specializations. I concentrated my studies in American History. All varies based on gradation requirements. I still had to take world history classes as well.
