Finally, a video that's NOT about elementary level only. The struggle is real for middle school teachers. If you're not a bit of a hardass in junior high, they'll eat you alive.

I use Vanilla Ice for my classroom management. When I say "Stop," the kids say, "Collaborate and listen!" They stop whatever they're doing and give their attention to me. It's always fun when they finally figure out where I got it.

Girl I really enjoyed this video. Your teaching style is so much like mine. Yes, I am going to steal this, just so you know. Students will be watching it tomorrow and I will repeat it at Open House, so that EVERYONE is on the same page. Love love love your behavior management system. Bus doesn't usually arrive right as the first bell rings. Most kids are at the school 15-30 minutes before class starts. Plenty of time to use the bathroom. My district has a policy against students leaving the classroom in the first or last ten minutes of a period.

Girl!!!!! I am loving how you teach the students and care at the same time. The way you let them know using words that they can understand and also being a tad sarcastic for them to know the expectations of the classroom! It helps me a lot because I am thinking of switching from elementary to middle school. From your video, I am feeling WAY better about switching up. I want to make relationships with my kids sort of the way you have. Being firm but also letting them know how to better manage their behaviors and teaching ‘em them how to be life long learners of themselves and academics.

Behavior is voluntary and so is defiance. Teachers, in too many kid’s minds are background noise and all too often they aren’t interested in thinking things through since lockdown. All the best to you. Save them if you can.

Something my teachers used to/still do is when the teacher or a student is about to speak is they say "Orient to me." That expectation means that your whole body is facing them,.It personally benefits me as a student because orient is kind of an expensive (or high quality) word.

I'm not a teacher, but coming from a student in the 11th grade, we had a teacher right after lunch who said that if we needed to go after lunch we can, main reason was that when your process your food it takes time, and that time comes right after the bell rings unfortunately. We also had a teacher that said that going to the restroom when we first come in, in the morning, was also fine because most of us have 2, 3 hours of travelling, and even if you go at your house, it will come again. But other than that, can't see why you can't wait for 40 minutes.

As a former female substitute teacher, I totally agree with you about that class, class, class and yes, yes, yes that it does not work with me either....because we are women. A woman's authority is different from a man's ....a man can resort - even unknowingly - to the deterrent and this is why the kind of things that would be ridiculous in a woman's mouth, work with a male teacher.

I have to say the bathroom thing is a bit harsh. I peed myself once because my 5th grade teacher wouldn't allow me to go. It was also right after lunch, but I didn't feel like I had to go then and it didn't hit me until I got to my class. I was begging her and she was so uptight and rude and I ended up peeing myself in my seat. That incident caused me so much emotional damage that I felt like I could never trust a teacher again. If they want to go to the restroom then let them. If they take too long then deal with it after class and talk to them about.

Super helpful Megan. Thanks so much. Creative, firm... You are so right and no one would tell me this. Your videos are making me feel why was I sending thank you notes to all principals that have interviewed me... I answered all their questions, plus shared all awesome ideas of mine; they wrote and nodded a lot, sometimes said: yes, very good.... but when did anyone volunteered this is a good way to set up behavior expectations... etc... And when i heard you say no colleague will be there sharing his/her findings from years past.. oh.. so nervous. Megan... I was a long term substitute of French and Spanish. Have degrees... etc and used to teach at the university.... During the last two years all I did was working as a substitute teacher (I traveled, had surgery, had an accident, a death in the family,, choose other things.... but more or less). HUGE QUESTIONS... I go to interviews saying... or rather, replying to the Principal's questions: What percentage of your class you feel you should be using the target language? I happen to know that realistically or not I should answer 100%. Awesome. I also know on the first days you set the tone for class. I also know from my experience covering for other teachers and for the long assignment that YOUR RULES, ARE A MUST.... I know you will start on a Wednesday and just for 25 minutes but you showed us your syllabus in a visually attractive landscape formatted page for day one, the scavenger syllabus questions for day two... if they brought it signed by parents, you raffle a notebook on each period. Then behavior expectations start... DO YOU DO THAT ON DAY ONE TOO OR STARTING THE FOLLOWING MONDAY? How do I get not to break the 100% target language usage and setting expectations on the first week to minimize disturbances and maximize learning????? please suggest an answer. Merci beaucoup M

I'm not a teacher, but I love the "We don't borrow each other's stuff." rule. I graduated high school almost 2 years ago, but while in school, I did let someone borrow my pencil, and they chewed on it, and pulled it apart. It was a Mechanical Pencil. I never used #2 pencils unless I absolutely had to. I never let anyone borrow after that. I told them my pencil is the only one I have, even if I did have more than one pencil.

I couldn't agree with you more on this! I'm an elementary school teacher, and I feel like this can be implemented in any classroom for any grade. These behavior issues and bad habits are starting to be seen more and more at a younger age now too, and they need to understand that they are in school to learn and not just socialize or play around.

Coming from a former student, I absolutely hate when teachers say "why didn't you go to the bathroom during your break?" BELIEVE IT OR NOT, it is a sign of respect for a child to come to your class FIRST and then asks to go to the restroom. That lets you know they are present and ready to learn as oppose to just being 5-10 minutes late because they had to go to the restroom. 5 minutes is not enough time to walk to class and go to the restroom especially when there are a specific number of toilets and everyone is trying to go at the same time. We come to class immediately and then ask to go to the restroom because if not then you guys (teachers) mark us tardy. And excessive tardies can lead to detention or a suspension ( at least that's how my high school treated excessive tardies). Middle and High school students have menstrual cycles and sometimes have to poop. No child wants to poop in front of their peers.Do you like pooping in front of your fellow coworkers??? Remember that you use a teacher lounge bathroom that has one stall and allows total privacy AND you guys usually have an entire planning period. Just please remember that students are human too and they aren't always trying to be mean, skip your class, or make you repeat yourself.
@tootscarlson
@tootscarlson 6 жыл бұрын
Kia Hamilton I thought this exact same thing. The kids just have to get used to the fact that every teacher is different, but I consider it respectful that they consider my class a priority.
@micahmyers2558
@micahmyers2558 6 жыл бұрын
They consider you thinking that they think your class is a priority to be a priority. However, no, coming to class and asking for bathroom time following a break or 5 minutes pass is not making your class a priority.
@kiahamilton2634
@kiahamilton2634 6 жыл бұрын
M Myers it’s all about perspective. You’re speaking from your experience and I’m speaking from mine. I respected my teachers enough to let them know that I’m here and ready to learn but I really have to use the bathroom. And as I said before, it’s not always to pee. My high school campus was huge. We had multiple buildings and the school didn’t place your classes close together. So it’s hard to walk to class in 5 minutes AND take the time to pee, poop, change a tampon or pad. But you have your opinion and I have mine. I’m just going to agree to disagree
@kiahamilton2634
@kiahamilton2634 6 жыл бұрын
Beraud and when you think about it that’s not the greatest policy either. Sometimes it takes a while for food to digest. That’s why they probably have to go to the bathroom so much after lunch. Things happen. I’m just speaking from a personal experience about how that made me feel as a student when a teacher didn’t let me use the bathroom because they assumed I wanted to skip class or because they didn’t want to repeat themselves. It’s okay if you disagree with me. I just think that you never know why someone may have to go to the restroom. Yea I’m sure there are some children that need to be told no because maybe they really did have enough time after lunch or during their passing to go and they just chose to wait till class time. However, I always think about the kids that have a legitimate excuse but don’t want to tell the teacher all the specifics. You gotta learn to think outside the box and put yourself in their shoes sometimes.

Two public middle schools I've subbed at recently have 10 minute breaks between classes because their campuses are huge. The students are allowed to pack up two minutes before the bell as it takes 5-minutes just to walk between the hallways to the next class with 2-3 minutes for a bathroom stop. But I also got an eyeopener on why half those students asked for a restroom break during class. All the water bottles, energy drinks, and snacks they're allowed to have at their desks. In my day (1990s) food and drink in class was a no-no. You ate during lunch break and got your water fill in between bells.

I think that flat out denying a child bathroom privileges is a verrry fine line. Sure, some kids are irresponsible and may take advantage if they realize you are too flexible, but sometimes you can’t help when you have to go. Especially if you are a female and just learning to manage your monthly “friend” 😳 I agree with having a clear restroom policy, but also managing kids on an individual basis if they are abusing their privileges rather than going with a zero tolerance approach where everyone suffers 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks so much for the ideas! I'm teaching 6th grade this year for the first time, so I love the idea of incorporating the memes with the classroom expectations.

Christina B. Taking notes are one thing, it’s a whole other to be dilly dallying and chatting with billy behind you and not paying attention. Pay attention with your face! :D if the baby giraffe can do it, you can too

Oh I love it! I'm also super strict at the beginning of year... seems to help the end go so much smoother... I love your slideshow. I may have to do some posters for my room this next year.... one rule I have cause in 5th pencils disappear over night.... I keep 2 boxes of pencils and only give out one for those who "forgot" there's on Monday. You better hope you keep up with it or another teacher gives you one cause we don't borrow from each other either!!!

I remember what my teacher always did whenever the class was talking. She would stop talking, lean back, and would say " I’ll wait. “ . All the attention would immediately go straight to her. That was extremely helpful for her. 😅

My high school was a very laid back charter school (loved it!) that gave students a lot of independent freedom, but through out my senior year I recognized that because some of our teachers allowed us to speak without raising hands or filtering our thoughts, the more quiet and sensitive students were often left out of important class discussions. After watching your video, I understand why there should be certain rules in place: a child's education is the top priority, and someone should never have the right to disrupt someone else's learning. I taught a sign language class for my senior research product and tried my best to implement some of these rules to seventh-twelfth graders! I'm going for my associates in education this fall and hope to start substituting as well. I can't wait to become a teacher and use your #iteachtoo tag! I love watching your videos, and I aspire to be the kind of teacher who understands the importance of a quality education for all. - Hannah

We will respect you when you respect us. Let us go to the bathroom whenever, we cant control what times we have to go. Some ppl listen better looking into space, ik I do and whenever a teacher says to listen with ur face it get me annoyed and I cant listen even more.
