One thing I learned from teaching, don't stay at school too long when the school day ends....you will never get it all done and you deserve to have time to yourself. Every class will always have students at very different levels. You are doing great and every day gets better as you are learning more and more on how to be a full time first grade teacher.

If I don't stay back to plan/prep, I feel like I'm not doing enough to help my students or myself grow. How do you navigate this?

I know it’s stressful but your students are great first graders can be a handful which is totally understandable

I teach first grade, I don’t teach main idea and key details until later in the year. I focus on phonemic awareness and phonics, writing cvc words, letter practice, and labeling. The passage you had sounds and letter combinations first grade students don’t know. That may contribute to the behaviors you’re seeing in class. I give my first graders 2 folders. One for language arts and one for math.

My school has a monthly schedule for focus standards that we need to follow. We do this in combination with teaching phonics.
