War Wind is a 1996 real-time strategy game in the vein of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness. It was developed by DreamForge Intertainment and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc. It runs on Microsoft Windows and used DirectX 2.0. A sequel to War Wind, titled War Wind II: Human Onslaught, was released by DreamForge and SSI in 1997. Both games were digitally re-released on GOG.com.
Some sites list the release date of War Winds as Aug. 24, 1996 while others say Sept. 30, 1996.The most recent file on a War Wind CD bought in the U.S. in January 1997 was Oct. 10, 1996 (as is the date stated in its version 1.0 README.TXT), but this could have been an updated CD release.

This looks vaguely familiar. Wasn't this the game where you send your workers into the baracks to train them as soldiers instead of just building soldiers as in every other game? It was an interesting idea, albeit a bit cumbersom, but it game a sort of "war efforts" feeling, when you converted your entire workforce into soldiers.

Battle Realms also borrows the same concept with peasants training in their respective structures and giving you the option to train them in other structures to create other units.

Hello. When I installed the game in my Virtual Machine, it only gives the the option for custom scenarios and multiplayer game. and when I do play a single player game, it just gives me a victory screen without me doing anything. what can I do to play the game like u did?

Interesting seeing units walk over forests, instead of trees as obstacles. 'Could add depth, such as trees providing cover from ranged attacks, or hiding units in forest a bit, some units such as elves getting a bonus when in forests.

now that this and older RTS game are on GOG I wish I could mod then, they are still sweet looking but they require some serious balances update. THat and a few of then have some annoying bugs on Win 10.

Yeah .. just replayed War Wind from GOG a while ago. First of all you have to mod and hack a bit to make it work on Windows 10, GOG should make it work right out of the box. Otherwise I would say that this game just isn't very enjoyable (not as I remembered the demo as a kid). It is slow, frustrating, have terrible path finding and and is not very fun to play. It falls short compared to Warcraft 2 or even Warcraft 1. However, it has really cool esthetics and lore (and music). I actually found a page that has sprites for most of the War Wind units. It would be really cool to remake it and give it some improved gameplay and UI. However, I don't think I would have the time for it (I've worked on several RTS games before).

Developers back then did not give a fuck or what? Hearing 2 lines over and over got tiring after like 10 seconds. Could not they record at least idk....5-6 more? Even for an old game this is just trash. The game looks kind of shitty even for its time. They give away on gog this for free, but eh....i guess I'll pass.
