But you must admit that at times there are too many people in one place and that the touristic apartments are generating income for the government more than what the tourists spend some times. Regulation is the solution to keeping the peace between local people and massive tourism… Venice has stopped cruise ships from stopping and the “tourist tax” is a very good incentive. Only 5-10% of Italy's GDP is generated by tourism and less than 10% of that comes from US citizens, so that equates to less than 1%. Keep your dollars, Europe isn't Disney world, we are just trying to protect our history and culture.

A friend just came back , he visited Florence , what is a nice city, he was asked by an old man to hold his big parrot , what was sitting on his arm. to let the parrot to stay on his arm, but the old man made a picture of him , with the parrot on his arm, and demanded 25 dollar for the picture. He refused to pay, he said , he did not ask for a picture. The Italian old man called the police and the police arrested him ! They took him to the police station and told him if he don;t pay they trow him in the jail ! I am Italian, and although I do not agree with some government decisions (for example, the entrance fee to Venice), I admit that some measures need to be taken to prevent our millennia-old art cities from becoming amusement parks. Unfortunately, without any regulation, we risk being overwhelmed by tourists. The message is not to deny access or to snub tourism-anyone who has visited this country knows very well that (almost always) tourists are received with happiness and smiles-but the sheer number of people arriving each year is impressive, and this situation needs to be managed. They welcomed massive tourism to boost the economy and in turn have shot themselves in the foot by over demand. People talk about the benefits of tourism, but increasingly, as foreign investors buy up hotels and turn housing into B&Bs, the locals are relegated to waiting tables and cleaning rooms. In exchange, they find themselves priced out of local restaurants and crowded off of local beaches, etc. International Corporate Tourism doesn't bring the kind of benefits tourism did 30 years ago when local residents owned the businesses making all the money. If locals aren't profiting from tourism, having drunk rowdy tourists roaming the streets all night loses its appeal. They're no longer tourists, they're invaders.

About bloody time. i spent a month in Italy about 5 years ago, mostly in & around Prato & popped into Florence a couple times of & there were way too many tourists & I thought this must piss off the locals no end. Also noticed locals wear sandals, not flips flops. Only saw East Asians, Indians, Africans & Australians wearing flip flops there.

the flip flops is because of the hiking.... it's not safe! many tourists take some types of excursions lightly. The result is that the authorities increasingly have to provide assistance. In Italy the health and emergency system is free for every person, even for foreigners and tourists. Taking off a helicopter with a rescue team has a cost, this cost is paid by the community. When you tackle a mountain trail, you better be equipped. Otherwise you could get hurt or even die and the Italian authorities pay the economic cost.

Right? Now multiply that 10 times. Things have worsened the last three years. There's not even a "high season" anymore: it's the same all year round. I'm from Rome, and I loved walking around the city centre and sometimes going to St. Peter or the Pantheon, but now it's just impossible: there are huge queues at any hour and in any month. You can't take a stroll along Via del Corso as it is custom for Romans Saturday afternoon, you can't enjoy the beautiful sights or the art because of the crowds. I feel defrauded of my own city.

I live downtown in a European capital. The whole neighbourhood has turned into airbnb apartments. Local renters are gone, businesses have gone out of business and now there are more tourists at the supermarket queue than locals. Tourists in flip flops or those hideous cork shoes (yeah, I know, they are comfortable but still HIDEOUS) who only shop for grilled cheese. This type of tourism does not support the local economy, only the person renting the airbnb apartment. If I never heard another suitcase roll in front of my building I would be happy. Tourism used to be a luxury. Tickets were expensive, lodging was expensive and I think we should go back to that time.

@@YvonneCreanI think it’s because a lot of them are just kind of clueless when they go abroad. The same can be said of many Americans, but more of them have been outside their country. That said, I remember Italians could be grating in Istanbul - for example Turks tend to speak quietly on public transit or in cafes, but you can always tell when a group of Italians come in. 😅 They’ll without a doubt be the loudest ones there. Except for maybe the Chinese group. 🙃 But the Italians are also usually very polite and classy as well.

I have never even been to Italy and I’m European. I’m not much for traveling as a tourist. I’ve had enough of traveling for work. So I never got the tourist craze and why people always have to be on a plane somewhere. It’s odd to me. Good for Italy for imposing boundaries. The world is overpopulated and a lot of people can be very ill mannered and lacking in common sense. They are all traveling tho, and all going to the same places, that has to cause disruption and chaos. Honestly why can’t people just stay put for a minute tho!? As sn Italian and Canadian citizen I agree with what my land of of birth is doing. Respect is needed when one visits other countries. I respect the policies of othere nations as well my Canada. Everyone should do the same.

Italy is a beautiful country and the people are very nice, specially in the south, however in Rome, locals and businesses are becoming very hostile towards tourists and are treating them like garbage, they don't care, they'll keep getting millions of tourists every year anyway, I wouldn't go to Rome ever again is a chaos, however Napoli and the south of Italy has my heart, beautiful nice people and very helpful.

I totally agree with them.. every country should establish their own reasonable guidelines, and not be criticized or shunned for it. Tourism is great, but it needs to be moderated, meaning not getting out of hand. Westerners love to do things their own way, that also spills over into behaviors while in foreign countries. More (of revenue bringing tourists) is not always better, less is much more reasonable and still profitable.

It's already illegal to swim in Venice's canals. These measures don't seem to harsh to me. Italy must maintain a balance between the needs of residents and of tourists. I'll be there in 6 weeks. I will abide by whatever rules they set. It's their home.

I'm in agreement. Just got back from Italy. And the main popular cities and attractions are a SS of tourists (like me) only I'm in and out. I don't loiter. I didn't sit on the Spanish steps (others did... plenty others- no tickets given). Rome was a SS. Forget Naples. Disgusting. Bari? Meh. Amalfi? Waaaay over hyped and insta over saturated photos. 2hrs that's all you'll need. Trust. Stick to small unheard of towns. I did. And it was way better imho. Anyway.. look, Italy is, if I'm being honest, overrated. Big time. After you see one cute small town with narrow alleys you've seen them all. Pizza? Everywhere. Gelato? Ya it was good. Worth the $2000 air fare + $2200 accommodations? I could do without. Look im not saying don't go. Go. But let's stop with the hype. Even the Italians are saying relax and stay away. Which is saying something.

The same for the once beautiful Cotswolds in England!!! Over- tourism cripples this area - one thousand tourists all standing in the centre of Bkurton - on - the - Water around the shallow river running through it, asking - "So where is this famous peaceful Cotswolds"? Long queue to buy ice creams or a table to eat a cream tea, or find a seat in a pub for a drink or lunch. Food and drink bought in from wholesale deliverers - not locally sourced and cooked!!! Etc., etc. etc. Souvenirs bought in from different parts of the country, even "Made in China"!!!! The same for the Lake District!!!

I agree!! Never complain period!! Especially when the times are good!!! Because the bad times always come!! And you will pray to God to bring back the good times… My sister owns a hotel, every time she says they were swamped, and she had to go help wash dishes in the restaurant ( she’s a hard worker!!). First thing I say Thank God, thank God!!! it was busy!!! Always be grateful, even the bad times, because it can always be worse!!

I have just been to Italy in April. Not peak season but still very crowded in Amalfi where we went for a day trip. I found it suffocating and couldn't help wondering what it must be like in July or August. But had a lovely trip, great food, people and history.

I am a venetian and i am also a globe trotter. I disagree with your opinion. There Is a big noticeable distinction between be a turist and a vandal. And this It s has nothing to do with flip-flops , and the amount of Money on someone credit card. Viceversa new generations of turists , INCLUDING IN THE LIST THE ITALIAN ONES, are not considering that a City of 1600 years old, cannot offers the same amusement opportunities available in Disneyland. Italy, Is only one of the most oldest colture in the world. Our European towns and cities deserving much respect. I cannot imagine what scenario would especting to me, if i would be caught printing my name with a screwdrive on the chinese Greatwall. Or littering food waste on Mayas statues, or having public sex on top of egyptian sarcophagus, or peeying on Westminster Abbey. Be careful, because the example i gave are not fruit of my imagination , but real events . If you dont believe my words,please make your own researches. I dont know what country are you coming from , but i am sure It is a beautiful Place , and if a day i would have the honor to visit it, It will my pleasure to leave that place immaculate and flawless, because i hope some other Citizen of the world would have some day the chance to appreciate such of unique beauty. I just got back last week from a 10-day visit in Italy. It was marvelous. Their railway system is the best. I didn't get the impression that they were tired of tourists. On the contrary, it provides an important livelihood for many of them. They just need to manage the crowds better, especially during the peak seasons. Italians Need the tourists. Especially the South where unemployment is high. Italians from the South, come to find work in western Europe, so the country could still do with income-bringing tourists 😂. Anyway, I can't wait to visit Italy again. Viva Italia ❤ 🇮🇹 🎉

Italian economy is based on industry, tourism represent just 5% of gdp and most tourists are actually Italians themselves. Then tourism is a low level investment you cannot make a lot of money considering all the people needed to work there. A factory is far better because it requires less and less humans and the income is way higher per capita. Do you think Italians aim to be waiters and cleaners for tourists? I work in an areospace company in Italy we make more money than 10 cities full of tourists with 1/100 of the employees.

So they’re ok with tourists visiting and spending money there but not enjoying themselves while they’re there. That’s like letting people into your bar but they’re not allowed to drink. If tourism is becoming a problem then limit the number of tourists you let into the country. Any situation where there’s too many people, festival, event, etc. results in chaos. It’s Italy’s own greed in letting in too many visitors at a time that’s the problem, not people taking selfies.

Visited Italy a year ago: Rome, Milan, Verona. Overcrowded cities, underwhelmed experience. Unfriendly and rude residents, especially in cities, perhaps because of overtourism. Scammers around every corner. Just waiting for Italians to visit my country so I can return the hostile favor😤
