Singapore Ramps Up Clean-Up Efforts After Oil Spill Blackens Parts of Southern Coastline
A collision between a dredger boat and a cargo tanker led to a massive oil spill in Singapore, blackening part of its southern coastline. On June 14, a Netherlands-flagged dredger struck a stationary Singaporean fuel supply ship. The country has shut its beaches and several coastal parks, including the popular tourist spot resort island of Sentosa. Singapore authorities have launched clean-up efforts, deploying 18 craft and laying close to 1,500 metres of container booms to absorb the spilt oil. Singapore Port Authority has said that the oil leak from the vessel has been contained and the oil escaped has been treated with dispersants. It added that the treated oil has landed along shorelines due to tidal currents. The oil spill has sparked concerns over the threat to marine life.
