@@kelp2243 You should buy land in Indonesia, in Kalimantan. and use it for agriculture. What i expect more from Singapore is not urban agriculture it is how to transform chemical compounds or raw minerals into fertilizer(potash) this is one of the holy grails and i expect Singapore to be at the cutting edge. Singapore gets all there fresh veggies and fruit daily from the border, so its a waste of resource doing urban agriculture. Its like you're rubbing your neighbours faces in the mud, saying look at us, we're ahead financially and technologically we're also getting ahead of you aggriculturely you should be ashamed etc.

@@redindian2209 since when were we getting ahead agriculturally, we can nvr do that lmao its physically impossible, also yes everyone buys land in indonesia, i got mine last mth. the gov is j encouraging urban farming because in case smt happens (like for eg covid 19, our imports decreased plus lack of supplies in those countries themselves, let alone sending stuff to us, so it caused mass panic buying) we wont ever be self sufficient but we wont be so dependent if u understand (also idt ur singaporean so i dont get why ur arguing w me abt my own country's policies) also what do u mean by fertiliser, by ur logic, we shldnt even waste resources on agriculture so why waste resources on fertiliser???

@@kelp2243 I was thinking the same about your 'in times of danger' precursor, however fertiliser if you patent it you can save the world. there is still 100s of year left, but at current rates of consumption it will run out soon. Singapore science is brilliant so i consider you to be in pole position. However now you see. instead of wasting valuable real estate on towers of so called 'corn-beef'(emergency supplies research), you can have gone into r & d into fertiliser.

Singapore is undeniably rich. Mainly because of disciplined Singaporeans and because of how it is run--strictly and unbending. Laws are imposed and felt by everyone, no one is special unlike in so many countries. A world model. More than 30 years ago, an American lad was lashed simply for vandalism. A tiny violation in other countries is equal to a big crime in Singapore. A Filipina ( it was controversial ) was hanged about the same period. The Middle East besides Singapore are easily THE SAFEST COUNTRIES of the world because of strict governance and imposition of laws. There are so many countries with economies as tiny as Singapore that have been poor for decades. We can say their culture played big as to how their status has been to this day, yet we've seen big improvements in a few of those same countries which defy reasons for not developing, if not for becoming rich. It is all up to how a government handles an independent nation. However, there is the factor of population size, that also made Singapore. It couldn't have progressed fast had it been as huge as India's or China's. This is interestingly debatable. Ultimately, the form of government is always manifested in the living conditions and the orderliness or otherwise, of a nation's society. Complete freedom or lack thereof, the punishment for every law violation and again, lack thereof, results in how we see societies. It is noteworthy to mention that Laws are made to be imposed.

In the past 30 years ago, Thailand used to be recognize as "Tiger of Asia" and Singapore was literally one of that to become the economic powerhouse. But in 1997, the economic crisis ruined Thailand a lot. The impact caused the number of suicide, crimes and unemployment are incredibly high. After that, Thailand has stuck for decades in development due to corruption and military action. At the same time, Singapore's economy was developing so fast and no one couldn't even believe that such a small country and water aren't drinkable like Singapore can surpass Thailand easily. Nowsaday, we truly admire Lee Kuan Yew, the former PM and Singaporean people for their hard work and dedication of the country. We mostly talk about Singapore when it comes to politics, education and innovation and we see them as a role model.

I was waiting for you to mention why Singapore fared so well. In my view it has more to do with leaders like Lee Kwan Yew than anything else. His reforms are directly resposible for what Singapore is today. Yes it's a tiny country, but it was in the hands of a great leader. How many great countries have been brought to their knees because of incopentent, stupid leaders? Singapore never had that, they always had at the top somebody that was dedicated to advance the citizens cause over anything else...and of course, that has paid off hansomely.

Singapore as a country , is rich because foreign riches enjoy tax-free environment so they change their nationality to Singapore to escapes taxes . But local Singaporeans don't enjoy any benefit from it . So as the country seems to be richer , it citizens probably don't feel it at all .

The main reason why Singapore is rich is that it is blessed with strong leaders, eg Lee Kuan Yew. LKY has undeniable foresight in the transformation of Singapore into what it is today. The subsequent generations of leaders are able to build on his legacy. Honestly as a Singaporean in this covid-19 Im thankful for being a singaporean. The government has many layers of strategy and subsidies for any situation. Many people complained for years about the high tax and CPF. Now the citizens are thankful because there are just so many types of grant available for people who lost their jobs or had a pay cut. It's something not seen in other countries and reduces the burden on it's citizens. Singapore government is rich yes, but they do not use that do their personal advantage and now the citizens get back the money they payed yearly through tax.

Hexroad Ammo as a singaporean yes our houses are affordable. Not cheap that I agree. If your a singaporean please educate yourself on economics and valuation of land. Our country is small and demand is high with little supplies of course houses would be expensive but the government pushed the cost down and also provided multiple packages for singaporean families to apply for grants in which effectively shave off a few grand. And also if you worked the CPF is more than sufficient to buy a house meaning to say by right if your not a free loader you would be able to afford a house without using cash. Please just get out of Singapore and also open your eyes for example the most similar city also a financial hub Hong Kong’s property prices is only affordable to the rich. In Singapore 95% and above of Singaporean’s fully own our own house. You have no idea how blessed you are to be a singaporean and to be here. Open your eyes travel out of your comfort zone and I am sure your views would have changed. If not then I suggest you either leave and look for your wonderland or go look for counselling because you are either not bothered to educate yourself on macroeconomics and the reason why property prices in Singapore cannot be lower than current valuation due to demand and supply (little land). It is people like you that complain for the sake of complaining and not realising that you are blessed that annoys me. Sure go ahead and migrate to get a house for thousands of dollars or few grands for a large house but at the cost of security, safety, job opportunities, family enrichment, family safety, child education etc. You should be ashamed of yourself for not understanding that our houses is affordable and cheap in this regard to all Singaporean’s but not so for foreigners.

When looking at the country's high average income and inequality, the video seems to have missed that Singapore is a city state. In most countries that have a mixture of rural areas and cities of various sizes, the largest cities tend to have the highest inequalities. But the average inequality of the whole country is evened out by the relatively lower levels of inequality of rural areas. Singapore has no rural areas.

"Political stability - the single reason why Singapore is doing so well. It both baffles and pains me to see how many people still love to complain about the situation in the city-state - which surely is the best place to live in the world. And the sole reason it can be what it is, is its political stability. That's what so many fail to realize. Unlike in the West, where no government knows if it's going to survive the next 2, 3, 4 years, in Singapore the ruling PAP has always been rather comfortable, knowing that it will retain its position after the next round of voting. Why is it important? Simple - can you imagine planning 5, 10, 20 years in advance, if you don't know that you're going to be in charge? How do you make strategic choices about the country's future, if 3 years from now opposition can take over and rip all your ideas apart? If you want to see how it works, just look at Malaysia - HSR delayed, ECRL cancelled, MRT2 postponed, MRT3 axed. That's why nothing ever gets done in the West these days either. Countries are sinking in debt, dragged by economic stagnation and unsustainable welfare - welfare that was passed, in the first place, to buy votes in previous election cycles. It's not a sustainable way to govern - it's a recipe for disaster. Singapore is so wealthy because foreign investors and business have long been assured of its stability. They know the tax regime is going to be friendly, that there is no bureaucracy to worry about, no corruption, that it's safe and well-organized. But who would invest in a small country where chaos reigns? Can you imagine a coalition of opposition parties, for whom the common denominator is merely their reckless hate of the PAP? Foreign capital would be gone faster than it came in. Of course many people who support opposition are also highly opposed to "Foreign Trash". Oh you see a lot of this vitriol around - what is doubly ironic as many of them actually work in foreign companies. Somehow this contradiction is lost on them. You can't be pro- and anti- at the same time. You cannot be both open and closed. You cannot support competition and expect someone to build protective barriers to ensure you have a peachy lifestyle. You cannot expect foreign capital to come and not bring foreigners with it. You have to fend for yourself - and Singaporean government has created the best conditions for people to actually be able to do that - precisely because it didn't have to worry about political competition too much and could focus on good governance with a long term in mind."

I was fairly fortunate to grow up in a middle-class household that spent money at lower-income household levels. We still got our yearly overseas vacations, but we were reminded constantly of how lucky we were. Once I forgot to bring a parent consent letter to school (one of those elite schools) and my classmates casually told me to get my maid to bring it for me before school ended. They were seriously confused when I said I didn't have one.

That high cost for a small house only to be kicked out as and when… that is not very sufficient with 3k earning, auto deduction of pay with a take home of 2.7k. Singapore does not have a dictatorship, the party is democratically elected. Secondly the inequality is high but that doesn't mean that people are poor. @Hadi Purwanto This video just stated Singapore's high cost of living and inequality. It's still on the internet. And look at the mess with countries like India and the USA: mired in in-fighting and indecision, too many voices, many of which care only for their own. Democracy is a beautiful ideal where everyone gets a controlling voice, but tie a man's limbs to four horses going in different directions and his body gets torn up. Put the man in a carriage, and pick a sensible stallion to pull him in one direction.

@@phatasm24 What does your hypothetical entail though? If I pick a leadership that I trust, they should have a good reason for jumping off the building. If it's off the second storey into some water to build courage then yeah that's fine. If it's off the twentieth storey onto hard concrete then don't do it. They're not forcing me, I can always leave. But if our leadership is so torn that it can't even come to a conclusion whether to jump or not, it's not a leadership at all. It's a perpetual argument. You need to make decisions and get to places. Along the way you may make mistakes, that's normal. But to take 2 hours to decide what to eat, lunch over already.

I've been to Singapore twice because it was very close to Malaysia. I'm never going back again. It's overrated and seems like a society where materialistic features is all that matters. 1) You don't actually own your home. Many "homeowners" are simply leasing the land for X amount of years. The government will take it back after the lease ends. 2) HDB flats dominate. Only available to citizens of Singapore. People can't afford any other home and many of these HDB flats are very small. 3) Lots of foreigners/expats for a reason. Not a lot of people enjoy living in Singapore so Singapore is very open to hiring foreigners. Many people I know who live in Singapore can't wait to go back to Malaysia during their off day. If you're shopping for clothes, etc., it's much cheaper to just drive to Malaysia than shop in Singapore. 4) Lots of regulations. Cameras everywhere and chewing gum is forbidden almost everywhere. Lots of undercover security. Basically put, you always feel like someone is watching you. 5) Boring. Outside of the Marina Bay, there isn't much to do. People are so materialistic so of course, if you can't afford that lifestyle, you're pretty much just doing the same things every day. Since there is so much emphasis on being successful and most of these jobs are business/tech related, there is a lack of diversity in other fields. 6) Business-friendly meant rapid expansion. Those who did not have any skills to participate in this labor force are now being sidelined. It's sad, really. They weren't ready to adjust and their country betrayed them. 7) Homelessness and elders working is excessive here. Every place I ate, there were elders easily in their 80-90's still working. They looked depressed. They can't retire in peace because government benefits suck and they aren't earning close to enough to sustain living there. Since younglings aren't willing to do this type of work, these jobs for elders are in abundance and are mainly filled by them. I don't know how a country can literally let elders work these labor-intensive jobs and not provide enough assistance to them. 8) Want to own a car? Forget about it. Unless you're wealthy, paying for the right to drive here is insane. A $20k car in America would cost upwards of $60-80k in Singapore. There's a limit to how many cars can be on the road so you have to pay a huge amount of money just to even have a car on the road. There's a reason why their public transportation is heavily funded but still, not everyone wants public transportation. 9) Lack of natural scenery. There basically isn't none. Wildlife here doesn't really exist. Exotic animals are all imported. The Gardens by the Bay is beautiful but it's all engineered. Want mountains or oceans? Forget about it. Singapore doesn't offer much of that. 10) Insane working hours. Singapore is productive in that their workers are goal-oriented for their EMPLOYERS. But this has a negative effect on starting families and raising them. It's why Singapore's population is declining and the need for foreigners. People aren't starting families because they are too "busy" working. Nothing wrong with that but the culture is just too focused on success rather than living life. There's no enjoyment living here long-term. I can name more but Singapore is often thrown around as some amazing society where everyone is rich and running around with luxury goods. It's simply false. Lots of people from Singapore hate living in Singapore and would jump at the chance of coming to America. If your goal is to make money, retire, and live comfortable for the rest of your life, go to Singapore. It'll be great for you assuming you don't care about much else. It's really overrated.
