The nickname Gretzky earned is "The Great One" for a reason lol hockey fans never need to have debates about "who's the GOAT" or "will xyz player catch up and be #1". Probably the reason why the media doesn't really talk hockey; not really any debate conversation to be had. Every answer is always "Gretzky".

Gretzky is so much farther ahead of anyone ever in terms of team sports. In terms of points, Gretzky is at 2857 and second place is at 1921. That would be like Kareem having 38,387 total points in second place and LeBron being at like 55,000. It's unfathomable how much Gretzky dominated in hockey.

I would say the craziest state for me is this... Gretzky, with 2857 career points, is the only NHL player to ever hit 2000 in his career. The fastest player to get to 1000 points is Wayne Gretzky, who did it in 424 games. The second fastest is... Wayne Gretzky, who took 433 more games to get ANOTHER 1000 points. The third is Mario Lemieux, who got his first 1000 in 513 games. No one else has done it in fewer than 650.

Since we got the random Gretzky mention, I'm gonna bring up the craziest sports stat that I saw recently. The highest scoring group of brothers in NHL history is the Sutters with 2936 career points. Those came from Brett (829), Brian (636), Ron (535), Duane (342), Rich (315), and Darryl (279). The second highest is the Gretzky brothers at 2861 points. Wayne got 2857, Brent Gretsky got 4.

You need to adjust for how many people play the sport. Being 20% better than the everyone your age group that ever tried to throw a football (ie almost every american in your age group) versus being 50% better than everyone your age group that ever tried ice hockey in the 90s (a few dozen thousand people at best). I know which one I find more rare and impressive. 50 td's is enough to surpass a 90 goal ice hockey season in the 90s in terms of athletic feat.

@@BubblesBub434 Sure, in the US. Football is rarely played outside the US or overall NA. Ice hockey has been played in Canada, US, USSR/Russia (tho in the 80s there weren't NHLers from east of the Iron Curtain), Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia. I get your point, I just don't think the gap worldwide is as big as you may think. American Football isn't very global. Watched, maybe, but not played.

I don’t get it there missing out on a time and a half
@JHockeyFan
@JHockeyFan 3 ай бұрын
@@user-sg8ld2hp6z I think it’s because hockey is seen as a very expensive white, usually Canadian, or at least Northerner sport. If you’re not from a hockey family, grow up with friends who like hockey, or in states like Minnesota, Massachusetts, Michigan, New York, it’s harder to get into. It’s only mainstream in about 10 of the 50 states. I grew up in Northwest Indiana, so hockey wasn’t a big deal since Indiana is a basketball state, and only was exposed to hockey through video games and the Stanley Cup Playoffs on TV. The Blackhawks were a joke and weren’t really on TV, and then when they got good, we started watching playoffs and my mom became a diehard Blackhawks fan. I didn’t get into it hardcore for awhile because no one around me was a big hockey fan. I became hardcore when I was a sophomore in university in Southeast Michigan where hockey is much more mainstream, Red Wings apparel being worn is very common. Additionally, hockey isn’t a primarily school based sport because it’s so expensive and most areas don’t publicly fund rinks (Minnesota is the only state that really does), and school based sports are big in the States. NCAA hockey is the most regional niche thing ever, most universities don’t have D1 hockey, making it harder to get into hockey on a grassroots level. Plus, there aren’t many rinks in most of the country: you don’t find ice rinks in most of the poor urban nor rural/small town areas of the States

He will live up to that contract. Guarantee 69 million and give a sizable signing bonus and a team option on the 3rd year. Good thing about the off season is Chiefs will be a team people will want to go to since there is a chance for the 3peat. Chris Jones may also not want as much as he did before with the legacy of a 3peat on the line. The first 2 things Chiefs need to do is lock down the contract for Sneed and CJ. The last point made by Brou about Brady not having great receivers until the 07 season is an under discussed point when comparing Brady and Mahomes early success. The edge is given to Mahomes based off of statistics but Mahomes also benefits from hall of fame talent on the offensive side of the ball paired with Andy Ried as a play caller. Not saying these are the sole reasons behind Mahomes success but it does help his raw stats

Kelce does average 6 more yards per game but he's a SIGNIFICANTLY worse blocker than Gronk. The only thing Kelce really has over Gronk is better health. Which is obviously very important but it's not the most important. I mean Terell Davis is better than Frank Gore, and Sterling Sharpe is better than Michael Irvin and Andrew Luck is better than Philip Rivers despite those guys getting injured far more than the other players listed. I'm just saying, it's not really an absurd opinion to say Gronk was better than Kelce or that it's a very close debate.

Gretzky "only" won 4 Stanley Cups and ranks tied for 50th all-time. Most by a single player is 11. Still, he is the undisputed GOAT in hockey. Winning the title is much more about the team and franchise than an individual Stat. That's why Mahomes will go down as the GOAT over Brady barring catastrophe to his career.

Mahomes relies on his mobility to a pretty large extent - how many years does he have left with this level of mobility? And acting like this current state is his floor, when he has one of the 2 best playoff receiving options in NFL history, and the best offensive coach of all time, is kind of insane. They’re going to lose both of them in the next few years, and then they’ll absolutely start losing against teams that they maybe shouldn’t - just like the Patriots.

The thing that isn't being accounted for here is the difference between sports as to when an athlete starts his pro career. Mahomes was 22. If you compare, for example, Roger Federer starting at age 22, he had the better "start" from that point forward. If you compare Gretzky (who started at age 17) from age 22 forward it becomes even sillier.
