First We Feast

Күн бұрын

Eating with Jo Koy is a lot like seeing his stand-up routine: loud, in your face, and filled with stories about his eccentric Filipino family. When it came time for Sean Evans to dive head first into the menu at Jeepney Filipino Gastropub in NYC, the choice for a dinner companion was a no-brainer. From staples like chicken adobo and arroz caldo, to now-legendary dishes like halo-halo and balut, Jo breaks down the Filipino food dos and don’ts as only he could. Will Sean convince Jo to give balut another shot, or will he swear off bird embryos for ever? Find out on an all new SITW.

My husband's uncle is Filipino, When We went to visit for 2 weeks in California, I couldn't walk through the kitchen without him forcing me to eat, amd I don't mean snacks, he would make me eat a full plate...lol I tried tp refuse amd he looked at me disappointed and said, but I made it for you so I sat down and ate everythinghe made...He made gallon freezer bags full of homemade lumpia for us to take home. I am not joking when I say they are food crack super addictive and you can't stop at 1. He was so loving, I wish I had been able to see him again before he passed away Rest in Peace Uncle Bill 💖😘...

The spoon and fork thing is becoming part of Filipino identity. I literally thought before that the rest of the world also use spoon and fork, I mean every Filipino household before had this giant wooden spoon and fork, and last supper painting or embroidery hanging on their dinning room's wall.

History and culture, man. Like our sheer, see-through Barong shirt worn tuck out that becomes our men's formal national wear. The pinoy like other east asian culture, only more so, has a deep and extensive blade (sword) culture. You can see that on the varieties of swords and weapons available throughout the archipelago. Pinoy martial art is not fancy but extremely deadly. So the Spanish or the Kastila whenever they have pinoy guests for dinner dont issue knives. Only spoon and fork. They were afraid that the feast might turn into a massacre. Same with the Barong shirt. Its sheer and worn tuck out so no weapons could be hidden underneath. Its a tribute to our sense of humor that we turn these blatant insults and forms of discrimination into our identity and sense of pride in who we are as a people. Crazy really.

I gre up eating mostly Mexican food and occasional family outings to Chinese buffets after church. In my teens I began to venture out after school to try new foods. I let my nose choose lol. I passed by a small Filipino market/hot food spot, smelled the most delicious thing ever. I walked in to order that smell lol. It was a bowl of steamed rice drenched in pork adobo with a side of lumpia. I fell in love forever. Filipino food is my first foodie love 😋❤.

As a Filipino American, for me I think local joints aren’t great. Filipino food is amazing when down right. For me none of the local joints in my area best my dads cooking. When Filipino is cooked with great cooks like in restaurants like in this video I think it could get more respect. People say it’s super unhealthy but I don’t think it’s different than any Asian food and American. There is also healthy varieties in fruits And fresh fish. I wouldn’t say its better than Chinese or Korean food but definitely not shit.

adobo has a number of varieties depending on the meat used - the basic and must the meat is stewed in mix of soy, vinegar and lots of garlic. As for the "meat", you can have pork, chicken, squid or a mix; can also have deep fried tofu as extender. to add some kick, chili flakes can do the trick. a sweet and sour variety can be achieved by adding pineapple bits. there are a lot of ways to cook and enjoy adobo.

I need all of those. Except the balut. That's a hard pass. Our Filipino neighbors taught my parents how to make Lumpia, and if I could eat that all day, every day, without worrying that my ass would BECOME the living room couch, I definitely would. Now I need to make some Lumpia and put my face in it.

Arroz Caldo is one of the most popular comfort food in the Philippines. It is a chicken and rice porridge flavored with ginger, garlic, onion and fish sauce. It is similar to a congee. The dish has Chinese origins but the Spaniards gave it the name arroz caldo which means hot rice.

Eating balut, 1. Make sure its hot, its gross when not hot and fresh. 2. U need good spicy coconut vinegar (with herbs and spices some call it "sukang pinakurat" not too sour) and salt. I think the secret in eating balut is in the vinegar recipe mix. Without vinegar, it makes it eating gross also. 3. After opening, sip the hot balut liquid. 4. Put little salt, vinegar, and drink. It does change the balut flav.in the mouth. Then repeat while eating balut meat. 5. For first timer, eat it in night or in dark place :D
