Hi David! You know I love your videos, I like what I'm getting to know about Zacatecas, I've never been there, it's a beautiful city, in some places I seem to go through the streets of downtown San Luis. And just at that moment you pass through alleys full of life and color that remind you that it is another place and its squares are unique, with a special peace. I found the attack by the pigeons very funny, and the canteen, perfect to end the day. This has been a video that touched something inside me, the architecture of Mexico is similar in some places to Spain, Italy and there is even a small town that seems to be taken out of London in 1900. And thanks to all the external influence and our pre-Hispanic culture, It gave a beautiful fusion, full of color, history, customs and beliefs unique in the world. I love my country, and I am proudly Mexican. Kisses ❤️😘

Another outstanding video! You are getting very good at this! You could be the hip (and interesting) Rick Steeves :) I know what you are saying about being intimidated by cantinas. Many seem dark and filled with quiet older men (or at least conversation stops when I walk in). The exception I have seen is Merida. They have legendary cantinas with excellent live music (starting around 6), happy hours, lots of dancing and free botanas (well, basically papas or popcorn with hot sauce in a bowl but, still, free).
@davidostrowski6795 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dan! I think you told me about cantinas in Merida before, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I liked the doors on this one, like an old wild west saloon, and darkness from outside! Most of the crowd in there were reasonably young, the barmen thought were a bit intrigued with me filming but by the end were all smiles and having a laugh. I planned a video in Mex City at a Cantina in Plaza Garibaldi but scrapped it because it turned out to be closed on that day, so I'm glad I got a chance to go to one!

Hi David. Well done. Think you captured Zacatecas identity in your video. Zacatecas is not as colorful or touristy as Guanajuato but has a splendid cultural life, which is amazing considering that it is a small city. One interesting point any visitor to Zacatecas must know is that its history is closely tied to silver. During the 17th century Zacatecas was one of the most important suppliers of silver of the Spanish Crown. Tons of silver were extracted from Zacatecas' mines and shipped to Mexico City where the mines owners would build sumptuous palaces for their families with all that wealth. The rest of the silver was shipped to Spain for the Spanish King. The road that linked Zacatecas to Mexico City is known as the King's Road and it has been designated a World Heritage site by the UN because through the King's Road not only silver was transported but also the European civilization (ideas, religion, art, science, technology, people from different races,etc) was spread. Rich colonial cities like Zacatecas were founded along the King's Road and they served as a base for the Spaniards to spread Christianity and the European thinking and way of life to remote places like the current Southeast and Southwest USA. There is a spectacular museum.of colonial art in a Guadalupe, a tiny city 30 mins away from Zacatecas city. The museum is located in a former Franciscan convent. The building itself is worthwhile the visit. Keep enjoying one of my favorite colonial cities in Mexixo. Cheers.

yes, Zacatecas is very Mexico.. I kind of felt tube same when I went to Spain the first time.. there were elements of the culture and the urban aesthetic that reminded me of Mexico or of the ways of Mexico.. I realized the second or third time there that Spain was a different place with a different people and almost a different culture, removed (in time and space) from Mexico, and yet there was a certain alternate reality about the connection, and strangly it felt like home (and yet not). Chihuahua (my home state) is similar to Zacatecas in many ways (as well as to Durango and possibly San Luis).. the plastered adobe constructions of rural and urban Chihuahua (which sadly destroyed a lot of the old houses and buildings in part due to the effects of the proximity to the US). in bustling Barcelona I found similarities to an every day life that I'd experienced in the pueblo that I lived my childhood in the sierra of Chihuahua. Thank you David for sharing your Great Adventures

@dannhymir96785 жыл бұрын
Well its funny you guys say that because a lot of places in Mexico were named by explorers, conquistadors, or settlers after their hometowns in Spain or places that reminded them of Spain. Take Jerez, Zacatecas for example, it was named so because it reminded a Spaniard of the Spanish town of Jerez de La Frontera--the place where the liquor sherry originates. The city of Zacatecas itself was early on referred to as the "Athens of Mexico" for its hill (Cerro de la Bufa), and its academic and artistic leanings. Zacatecas and Jerez have a lot of buildings dating from late 1500s-1700s, as well as post colonial 1800s-1900s. In Jerez you find the teatro, Royal Mint, and the jardines which have fountains adorned with the signs of the 3 major religions transplanted from Spain--the Christian cross, Jewish Star of David (many conversos came to the New World, Mexico especially), and Islamic crescent moon (again conversos). Zacatecas has a very important historical legacy both for Spain and Mexico--it was largely from the mines of Zacatecas that Spain was flush with gold and silver (silver is still mined to this day and has been one of the most productive silver deposits in the world). In fact many foreign (U.S , Canadian, Swedish, etc.) and domestic mining companies still extract a lot of ore and minerals in the state. Also many of the myriad Catholic religious orders originally had their homebase in New Spain in Zacatecas.
@davidostrowski6795 жыл бұрын

It's nice to see Zacatecas again, David. How much were those pastries?! 20 pesos or so? LOL. Funny stuff. And, Zacatecas may be "homey," but it certainly isn't "homely"! :o)

I don't think there's any shame in saying that Mexico looks like Spain. We as Mexicans are proud of both of our roots. We're a mix of both European and Native Indigenous Mexican. The fact that there is strong evidence of both in our ancesteral heritage, whether its the old world architecture, language or food, its all a source of pride, because without this combination, our rich culture would not exist.
@davidostrowski6795 жыл бұрын
Deffo, it's more aimed at foreigners and youtubers like me, I'm just fed up of hearing 'is this spain?!' (From myself included) when Mexico is indeed a fusion as you quite rightly say

We are 2 years and 10 months from retirement and looking for a cool weather city. If we were your parents would you suggest Zacatecas, San Cristobal de las casas, or somewhere else ? Thx !

Hey I've never been to San Cristobal but I'd definitely recommend Zacatecas. Beautiful city and lots of day trips possible. Nice and quiet too. Not a huge expat community compared to Cristobal or San Miguel etc

@@tinglestingles Well this would not be your cup of tea then. Zacatecas cities have cathedrals, churches, chapels, convents, and monasteries like the U.S. has Starbucks stores across from each other everywhere. Literally there are huge churches crossing the street from a basilica. Zacatecas was the homebase of nearly all major Catholic religious orders during the Spanish colonial period in New Spain (Mexico), and it was from that city that a lot of missionaries, priests, monks, nuns, and explorers set out to convert the natives to Christianity (and further afield sent to the Spanish Philippines). Some of these included Zacatecas born, and Albuquerque, NM explorer/conquistador Juan de Oñate.
@dannhymir96785 жыл бұрын
@@desertpair2 Except it was not an impoverished colony. New Spain, as Mexico was known then, was regarded akin as another kingdom (viceroyalty)/autonomous territory of Spain. Mexico City (New Spain) was the most important Spanish administrative center outside of Spain (oversaw much of North America and the Asian colonies like the Philippines), and at the time was considered wealthier and more established than any of the American British colonies. Aside from that it was thanks to the silver and gold mined at Zacatecas (and Peru) that Spain was flush with coin to fund all its European trade and wars (especially with the Low Countries). Spain had its golden period when the Mexican and Peruvian mines were the most active. Its also why Spanish galleons were the frequent targets of British (sanctioned by Queen Elizabeth) and Dutch pirates. Historical economists also determined that it contributed to inflation on the European continent. In fact it was from the abundance of Mexican gold and silver that Spain was able to create the world's first reserve currency--the "pieza de ocho" or piece of eight used all over Latin America, Europe, Asia (China, Philippines, Japan, etc.), Africa, and the British American colonies. Its denomination signature was the $$ sign (single S with two lines through or what we recognize today as the dollar sign). The two lines represented the pillars of Hercules. As said before because this Spanish/New Spain currency was widely used including in the American British colonies, the American founding fathers later adopted the sign for use for the dollar sign denomination after they declared independence from Great Britain. Its also why a variation remains in use for the Mexican peso.

My sister loves Mezcal and she drinks it neat, but I do not like it at all. Mezcal is too earthy for me, and I am not fond of its other flavors either. My strong drink of choice is a good London Dry Gin, but most of the times I drink only wine and beer.
