I like Centro a lot. The twisty cobblestone streets (if you want a car, you want a SMALL one!) and the old buildings, cathedrals, etc. Built into the mountainside and very picturesque! We stayed with relatives in the nearby "village" of Tacoaleche. I found that place to be an interesting off-the-beaten-path Mexico, with almost no outside anglo interruption of the local culture. I never saw another white guy the whole time we were there (about 10 days, I think, the first time; and about three days the second time), and I felt a little out of place walking down the street by myself and people would look at me like I was a blue octopus or something. BUT they were all very friendly. Almost every morning, I would get up fairly early and walk down to the main drag . . . and go into several stores, the panaderia, the carniceria, fruteria, and sundry tiendas and mercados. I find it fascinating how specialized the stores are in a small village. All in all, a pleasant experience in a town in the middle of nowhere. Interestingly enough . . . people would get dressed up and drive into town to visit the "upscale" Wal-Mart in Zacatecas.

That green-gray plant like organism clinging to the rocks is lichen. A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship. The combined lichen has properties different from those of its component organisms. Lichens come in many colors, sizes, and forms. Lichen help break down the granite rocks.

Fact: the Teleferico (cable car) in Zacatecas was one of the first of its kind in Mexico and Latin America (installed in the 1970s), and was the first in the world to criss-cross an entire city. Zacatecas also played a very important part in extraction of silver (highest yield in the world alongside Peruvian SLP mines) and gold for Spanish crown. That's why you can still find Royal Mints in Zacatecas and smaller cities/towns like Jerez. It was also once the 2nd largest Spanish city in Mexico during the early colonial period and a religious capital for various Catholic orders (Jesuits, Franciscans, etc.), convents, and monasteries. It was from Zacatecas that many explorers and conquistadors went north (northern Mexico and U.S.) as well as Catholic missionaries.

We are researching cities in Mexico for retirement and have it down under 10 cities. We want cool temps, a good hospital/healthcare, not the highest prices in the country, and friendly people. Zacatecas and Cholula are two of the smaller cities we are looking at...we wonder if we’d get bored after a while. We currently live in the US in a city of 350,000. We hope to live in a walkable city...we love to walk and ride bikes. Anyway, we love your videos ! We may have to visit many cities for a couple months each. What do you think...could you live full time in Zacatecas ? Thx !

Hey! Zacatecas would definitely satisfy your requirements, however I'm not sure I would live there permanently. Out of Zacatecas and Cholula I'd definitely prefer Zacatecas.
