Love the fish. Love the chips with the malt vinegar and salt. Grew up close to the beach so the smell of the sea, hot sand, Coppertone, and the hot oil and the fish and chips brings back so many memories. We didn't have the mushy peas so never developed a liking. As always, your recipes are down to earth and yummy as all get out. As for that last bit of beer...it would not have stood a chance.

I’m from Thurnscoe, half way between Barnsley and Doncaster. My Mum and Dad had a fish and chip shop. MY Mums batter was to die for. 😂I’ve lived in Australia for over 60 years now. NOBODY, NOBODY, makes fish and chips like Yorkshire. Boy, am I looking forward to making this batter. GO RIK

Oh yaaaaaaas!!! Nothing beats fish and chips with salt and vinegar!!!! Living in New Zealand they dont know about salt and vinegar! And my heart goes back to Cape Town where I was born and raised and that's how I grew up folded in paper every Friday night!! This is our go too when we land in Cape Town, first stop!!! Working at H Salt fish and chips, we coated our fingers on batter before lowering fish on the fryer. The tops of my fingers would go right in the grease. Your way looks much safer😮

Hi Rik, fish'n'chips are a memory food. Sight, smell and your a kid again. Friday treat,local chippy, and trying to get a few chips out of the paper on the way home. Pickled onions or a wally, Scraps. Liplickin'. I would never have thought to miss out the flour dredge before dipping in the batter, but as you say : " each to their own". You cannot get proper British fish & chips in the States, sadly. Growing up in Canada, I got better frozen fish & chips from the mall M&S than what they have here in the US. Perhaps thanks to Rik I will make my own ❤

So we all did our time in the kitchen and I can tell you know with the wife in a poorly state and the new dishes I am learning from you she is happy so I am as well 😅😅😅😅

I find fish and chips very hit and miss these days. Apparently, the best fish and chips are in the north of the UK. I get so disappointed when I wind up with stodgy, undercooked batter and soggy chips. I have learned to make my own now and you cannot beat homemade for sure.

Can you help me please, I followed your recipe twice and the fish stuck to the bottom of the fryer on both occasions. Any ideas why? By the way once scraped of the bottom of the fryer it tasted amazing.

Ha ha ha - laughing not the sticking eating out the bottom - we all do that. Did you ease them in? Use a a big spoon to lower them in if unsure of the oil. Thank You. Best, Rik

gone off you. Can't get Cod, or any other similar fish, the fish we have here are tropical, and much stronger in flavour. I actually reminiss about glorious Cod and Chips back in the 60's with big flakes of sweet Cod, and best of all cooked in beef dripping.

I had a lot of very good food in the 3 weeks that I was in England. But, the worst fish and chips, that I have ever had, were there. I do not believe that this was common but they left the skin on the fish which created a soggy mess. Guess I have to go back and try again.

why did you change your batter from plain flour with baking soda to self raising flour what sucks oil in and is soggy ,used beer and before said just water and the vinegar will react with soda ??seems very double standards and very misleading to beginners !!!
