was a fisherman for 34 years, so I know the fishermen get no sympathy, none, from the trawlers owners, or government, absolute disgrace.

Really good documentary this. All brave men. I did a Google search to see if there was any follow up to this and it seems that Scott Watson passed away last year. R.I.P, he seemed a good man.

@@SUPERLEEDSYRA he certainly did, for a further 30 years after this documentary, he ended up captaining ships through the Sewers Canal

Very strange, looks like they've caught a couple of Pufferfish at 25:29 Really rare in UK waters!

Two would suggest that they wasn't uncommon. They are sea urchins.
@249346373 жыл бұрын
@@chubeye1187 Sea Urchins.....Now that you've mentioned them...Blindingly obvious. Thank You. I'm guessing that my brain was just expecting to see fish, so I just identified them as some sort of fish (incorrectly). Don't know why as I'm aware that all sorts of stuff that isn't a fish gets dragged up in trawler nets...Parts of planes, fossilised mammoth bones / tusks, bombs, shipwreck fragments....and also sea urchins.

Maybe the Cod Wars were a blessing in disguise - Yes it put fishermen out of work but when you consider the crappy pay and the horrible conditions they worked in they would have been better off on the social.
@brizlee5 жыл бұрын
Not much of a blessing for the town of Grimsby. Yes the trawler owners and skippers got wealthy but the money from fishing filtered down through the crews, the merchants the dock workers and ship repairers so the whole town benefitted.

Social security 15shillings three week trip at sea upto 150 quid my first trip with marr from fleetwood with bill reader got me £500 after tax age 16.1/2 yrs old my dole was nothing.....so sea was best and I sent £30 home each week wages so I had at least £100 even landing in debt......sea was set every time

Benefits at that time was an insult to men who worked hard and wanted to be paid wages for what they did. Today it's acceptable to be on benefits. Real men will work for thier famlies no matter the cost to themselves because they want to be seen as honorable. I'll never forget what my dad did so we had a roof, clothes and food in the fridge every week. I wish i could go back and thank him for all he did rather than being such a jack ass as a teen. My boys see me work every day long hours so they are thankful and never cry about what they dont have. Too bad kids today do t know what work is.

easy for others to say that have not seen their city/community reduced to a shadow of its former self during their lifetime ? speaking from a "hull born" point of view , figures given since the loss of the fishing industry for every man that went to sea fishing, 14 shore jobs were created ? ship owners/ship builders/ chandlers /dry dock engineers/ accountants / dockers/ railway workers /hauliers /fish processing work /wet fish shops . all traded off on the EU alter by every british unionist government (asset stripping England) just like they have with steel and coal industry for city of London( jobs for the privately educated boys n girls) who avoid politics as a career ?
