In the 90's I was hired as a creel worker at Summit lake to assist during the run. I'm impressed with the new equipment that has been implemented. The underwater camera is awesome and the in-stream pit tag reader is a tremendous tool. We injected and read all pit tags in the Mahogany creek fish trap building back when I worked there. Whenever I smell cloves I think of those days. LOL There were some cold mornings spent there but I learned a lot and gained so much respect for the land, the people, and most of all the Lahontan cutthroats.

Prior to and during my first trip to Pyramid Lake, I'm drawn to this area and the two incredible species of Lahontan Cuts, the Summit & the Pilot strains. I'm thankful for all the efforts to preserve and restore these populations. Great effort has taken place to continue to restore and improve the Truckee River. My hope is the folks that live around this area, particularly surrounding urban areas learn more and desire to help efforts to restore the entire spawning habitat, as irrigation, pollution, etc. continue to be a threat to this restoration.

Great video! I heard about this restoration project and have been wondering about it for quite a while now. Thanks for making this video and getting the story out there. The tribe is doing great things.

I understood that there was only one pure strain left, and it wasn't the locally extant population

Does Summit Lake also have cui cui fish too? Great video. It was very informative

Hi, thanks for your question! According to one of our biologist, Summit Lake doesn't have Cui-ui fish but they CAN be found in Pyramid Lake.

STOP AND OBSERVE THE TREES around Lake Summit and alongside the streams at 0:26 of this video. Why haven't the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Native Americans RESTORED THE TREES that provide the nutrients needed by the food chain of the Lahontan Cutthroat Trout at Summit Lake?? Whenever I see a video like this i always think of Aldo Leopold's Quote from A Sand County Almanac "Education, I fear is learning to see one thing by going blind to another."

The fact that you question the efforts of fisheries biologists that are trained in stream restoration is absolute idiocy. There are no trees at :26 or anywhere else in the area of this vid. It is dessert - no trees. What you call trees are only brush, and you can bet that if the biologists felt it important to restoring the stream habitat, they would have planted it there. Just because you read some poetic meanderings by Leopold who lived in Wisconsin doesn't give you the knowledge or education to question local professionals who well know what the habitat needs. Just be thankful that they are working to improve it and say thank you.

@@gjbingham Every fishery biologist should try to restore the food chain for the aquatic inhabitants of a stream, river and lake.
