Really enjoy your videos... I grew up fishing everywhere you go in Tampa Bay... I'm 61 years young and have plenty of fishing experience... I would like to offer you a bit of helpful advice on how to string your fish to help keep them alive longer... especially for longer and/or hotter days ... use your knife to cut a small slit 1/2" center of bottom jaw ... push stringer thru hole and up thru the mouth... this prevents stringer from rubbing on the gills and the fish can breathe easier... hope this helps... great videos and I've subscribed.... TY

Please be very careful using a stringer in salt water. I was wade fishing for trout and had them tied to my waist when a bull shark decided that he wanted them. The next thing I know is that all 280lbs of me is getting draged through the water side ways. Luckily I found my knife and was able to cut before things got real ugly I dont do that any more. I made a cooler out of an old back pack. A stinger full of fish is easy pickings for toothy criters. Please be careful. Things can go real bad real fast out there. Ive seen it happen more than once

Pine Float I 100% agree, although I have never had a saltwater incident, I did have a gator strip a dozen blue gill off of a stringer that was tied to my john boat. Since then I have been paranoid about stringers, sounds like your lesson was a little bit harder, glad you didn't get injured.

talking about ice and stringers, i usually make my own stringers out of para cord and a small piece of thin copper tubing and instead of going through the fishes gills ill just put the stringer through the lip (from bottom to top). once i get to my truck ill put them on reusable ice.. what it is, its a 2 or 3 liter soda bottle with water. fill it about 2-3 inches from reaching the top so the ice wont over flow, put the top after it freezes, freeze it and thats it. i have a few diff sizes from 1-3 liters and had them for YEARS. saves me lots on ice and keeps my fish just fresh and not almost rock hard frozen like when you put them on ice ice.. makes it easer to clean and fillet when they are cool rather than cold on bear ice.. hope the tip helps.. keep the videos coming! good luck out on the water.

here we use a wire mesh "bag" with a floating lid, you just lift the bag out of the water slide the fish in and you are done, keeps the fish alive and lets them swim without hurting their gills with the stringer, not sure how big they make them we usually have plenty of room for the sunfish and bass and other fish in ours
Nice video good tip, it's always better to keep the fish alive as long as you can for freshness and as you stated incase something bigger bites...I remember my Dad forgetting the bucket and making a stringer out of a branch, it did the job.
@redfish128611 жыл бұрын
Hi Marty, I use my wade fishing gear such as my floating fish bag for keeping multiple fish alive plus the sharks get to them either. I hang it off the cleat on my kayak and drag it around the bay. Otherwise I flip the floating bag on deck when paddling home. Just throwing in my 2 cents on the topic. You really have a knack for capturing your fishing outings! I enjoy watching them...
@KitchenOnTheLeft9 жыл бұрын
If you use one of the stringers from the store that has a pointed metal tip, you can push it through the fish's bottom lip and pull it out of the mouth. It does leave a wound, but it's a flesh would and is better than potentially injuring the gills and killing the fish if you decide to release it. That's just my two cents man, keep up the good work. Edit: after reading the comments, some of these guys have good ways of making a pointed stringer for cheaper than buying one at the store. Just goes to show that fishermen never run out of creative ideas lol
@paulr191710 жыл бұрын
you could probably use a nitting needle or a peice of wire even to puncture the skin under their jaw. That and a smaller line may hurt them less and they will have a better rate of survival until you're ready to clean them. Love the videos! Five thumbs up!

Another way that is actually less harmfull is to punch a hole in the bottom of their mouth in the tissue and put the rope thru their mouth instead of their gills, this puts a hole under their chin but it keepers all the damage away from their gills
@kaochaos110 жыл бұрын
Exactly, fish stringers already have a sharp tip to do exactly that. Will less likely kill the fish this way.

If you can come up with a design like Fish Slick Stringer they'll stay alive a lot longer. With the pointed tip, if you punch a hole through the fishes bottom lip (The soft skin between the hard lip) and out the top lip. They will stay alive for hours, even trouts which are not hearty fish. This allows nothing in their gills and will allow them to close/open their mouths allowing them to breath completely. If released, they will be left with two small holes that won't effect them.

I know you dont like the ladyfish. To allot of us they are prime chunk redfish bait. I know im set for halfday atleast. Also the accidental mullet from the cast net. Have you tried any cut or chunk or strip bait. You might consider it slower paced but spread some around you with a couple poles and you will stay busy reeling in reds in tampa bay. We all apreciate your vids soo much i cant even tell ya...best kayak fishing show by far. And your local! Awsome

Try running the stringer through the top of the fishes mouth (through the nostril into the mouth) it will keep alive forever, and it's much more humane than running the stringer through the gills.

Love the video! Question... what is considered close enough without having to use ice? I'm new to fishing and buying ice is a pain
@francismeowgannou53224 жыл бұрын
Most fish don't go bad without ice for couple hours. They stay fresher if you bonk them in the head and bleed them first. Better if you destroy the brain and nerves.
@FAMILYFUN-un1zm4 жыл бұрын
@@francismeowgannou5322 Found a video that said you can freeze a fish without gutting for abt 6 months. Do you agree with this? I have a fish in the freezer and Im waiting till I catch more so I can gut them all at the same time and have a big fish fry dinner.
@francismeowgannou53224 жыл бұрын
@@FAMILYFUN-un1zm yes it should be fine for eating. However keep in mind that fresher the fish the better it tastes. Also to keep fish or meat fresher in the freezer it could be a good idea to invest in a vacuum sealer; frozen vacuum sealed meats/fish tastes almost as good as fresh. Also when thawing the foods put them in your fridge the day before so they can come back up to temp very slowly. This helps maintain the cell structure of the meat thus keeping the texture.

You know that Jaw Stick Fish Holder you use? Sell it! We always used the stringer made of rope with the spike on one end and a ring on the other. You stab the spike through the bottom jaw of the fish then slip it through the ring and tie it off. The way you use the string through the gills damages the gills so the fish can't breath and dies much faster, driving the spike through the bottom jaw will allow the fish to live all day long. Why do you think they put that spike on one end and a ring on the other, if you weren't going to stab it through the hard tissue of the bottom jaw? www.academy.com/shop/pdp/tournament-choice-h-h-6-poly-stringer/pid-13971?color=Yellow&N=845454864 Another one of my favorites is the Chain Stringer, it has clips on a chain to clip off the fish so they don't bunch up on each other and you clip them through the bottom jaw as well... www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=441853

Not sure how it works where you are but,the biggest trouts I have ever caught year in and year out have been on lady fish chunks. I have caught many 24"+ trout and lost one that broke the hook as I tried to get him in the net that was over 3 feet. I thought it was a sick snook until I could see him. I am in Lee County Florida and here lady fish is probably my favorite all around bait. I filet them then cut the fillets into slivers and put them on a popping cork or what ever rig you have set up. Good luck and happy fishing.
