FishTown, Series 2, EPISODE 1
Take half an hour for an insight into the fishing industry in the NE of Scotland in Episode 1 of the BBC fishing documentary FishTown!
Catch it on BBC1 Scotland - 1930 - Mondays
This is the industry, way of life and heritage we are campaigning for.
To take back control of all out water and resources and rejuvenate our fishing to be a sustainable, multi-billion pound industry - a world leader equal to Norway.
Our government MUST NOT trade away fishing a 2nd time by surrendering our greatest natural resource to hollow EU threats on trade in goods and financial services for continued exploitationary access to British waters.
The UK contributes 50% of the waters and 60% of the catches to the common EU pot but only receives 25% of the quotas.
British seafood is some of the finest and most in demand in the world - EU markets have high dependency on our seafood and will continue to post-Brexit.
The government must take back FULL control of ALL our waters and resources and use this freedom to implement bespoke British policy to husband our great resource as a national asset that can inject huge prosperity to rural coastal communities for generations to come.
Any future deals on fishing must be on a STRICTLY annual basis and ONLY when the UK receives a reciprocal value of fishing opportunities in return.
If the above happens we will be a normal, independent coastal state - the equal of Norway, Iceland and Faroe, with a multi-billion pound industry exporting high quality sustainable seafood globally.
Government must have the guts to stand firm that they won't sell out fishing for a trade deal. Something Boris Johnson said would be a "reprehensible" thing to do.
With British policy that - ends the cause of discards; tackles EU owned but UK registered Flagships; repatriates our resources; and ends shore based quota renting "Slipper Skippers", then we will see a rejuvenation to Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Macduff, Banff, Buckie (and all the communities in between) to the boom towns they once were.

When I was at the sea the statistics were that fishing was 7 times more liable to end in fatality than coal mining but in my opinion a thousand times more of a life!

You didn't read my message correctly Jock ! Its ridiculous whats happened and so many vessels about to pop their clogs are registered and insured in Panama and flying a foreign flag now. Glad you've got good taste in music !

Your comment didn't age well. Now the fisherman is really struggling as never seen before as the EU was buying 80% of the catch. Good luck with your country plunging back 30 years due to Brexit... At least you're a good example for the rest of the EU countries not to follow suit! (aye and get out of Irish and Norwegian seas now) Your protectionism in a globalized world is a shot in the feet.

I seem to remember the West's buying a £1.5 million boat in another fishing series and harping on about struggling to catch enough fish to pay for it , now there doing the same over a £2 million pound boat , i wonder how much the next one will cost !

So that's quite interesting mate, the "West's" - spending-up big, first with a 1.5 million pound boat, then a 2 million boat, I wonder if there are some "inbuilt caveats" - for them to "get the loans", and also prevalent and importantissimo to look at, what "type" of loans are they, are they "standard" with standard-rate from banks, or "special mates-rates" low interest?? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For instance, if they are spec. mates-rates, with "inbuilt-caveats", maybe they have to "TAKE-AWAY" the Chinese Communist Party, or some "Newbies", recently-arrived bananas from some other place, that's what you call I.C's, otherwise - NO LOAN. EVERY POSSIBILITY WILL BE PUT UNDER THE MICROSCOPE, FROM NOW ON, EVERY BANK TRANSACTION RESEARCHED.

Fantastic job by the boys at Peterhead, and down the road at Fraserborough, they are catching the fish, that go into all those fish n chips meals around Britain, they probably grow the potatoes in Scotland as well, good on them. The retired fisherman turned fishmonger Stephan, he is doing a great service for the villagers around the county, where they perhaps can't get to the fish-markets or to the coast, THE-MAN- IN-THE-VAN, can still ferry-the-fish, from the sea to the "valley's". Even better if the fisherman/boat-owners, have their "people" (man or woman), on the port, with the van, the fish don't even have to "go to market" they just go from boat, straight to refrigerated van or truck, and out to the people, cafes and restaurants. *Note: Just a quick mention for Stephan and company in the merry Peterhead Fishing CO-OP, they think that they are "FISHMONGERS"?? YOU SHOULD SEE THE FISH-MONGO'S IN THE SYDNEY FISH MARKETS, THERE ARE WALL-TO-WALL FISH-MONGO'S EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK, IT IS FISH-MONGO CENTRAAL, IT IS FISH-MONGO H.Q. THEY HAVE GONE FISH-MONGO BONGO'S. The other day, I went there and had look, what reasonably priced fish was on sale?? And to my surprise, alarm bells ringing, there was a couple of Chinese "office workers" I heard someone say they are just "office assistants" on salaries of $50,000 per year, and they were SPLURGING-UP-BIG-TIME, $300-$350 LOBSTERS - FOR STARTERS, ABALONES FOR BREAKFAST, KING-CRABS FOR GRABS, SEA-URCHIN MORNAY, AND TIGER-PENIS SOUP, IT WAS A SCANDALOUS DISPLAY OF SPENDTHRIFTNESS, ALL FROM OFFICE BANANAS ON "STARTERS SALARIES" , CAN YOU ASK THE BOYS AT PETERHEAD, WHAT'S GOING-ON DOWN-UNDER IN THE SYDNEY FISH MONGOS??

Scotland shouldn’t have sold its quotas then. You can’t sell something and still own it. Other countries didn’t allow quotas to be sold to foreign entities, the UK did.

As far as superstitious things go on fishing vessel I know for fact having a woman on board is just nonsense but the other ones like leaving on Friday is a no no having a cat on board is a definite No-No those are true but take women on board I've done really well fishing in the North Atlantic with women on board all nonsense as far as that goes as soon as we took the cat off the boat that was the first time we ever hatched it to the hatch cover and I don't care don't leave on Friday leave Saturday morning at 12:01 a.m. trust me you'll be better for it this comes from a Maine fisherman

In Cornwall UK you will find ACTUALLY that women are in general not wanted on a boat. It does happen but most fishermen don't want women on a boat. Perhaps in the US where most men are sissies, women are permitted because they are stronger than the men, but in Britain they make us quite a bit tougher than you septics.

@@isaaclaurenson3860 as a sea angler i have noticed more fish last year and LOADS of mackerel due to less fishing fleets taking all the fish so close. This has helped the ecosystem. That added with covid has given the fish some breather. Problem with modern tech is no fish is left behind with these big trawlers.
