I personally think this performance (not just this song) in particular is the best I’ve ever seen from both Mike & Chris and that’s saying something. Granted it’s personal preference but these men were ON ONE this day.,

@jbrad1211 He was playing one of his Dudenbostels in this vid, because it was taken a while ago. Since about 2008 or so he's been playing a 1924 Gibson F-5, from the Lloyd Loar era. I heard somebody found it under the bed of the first owner's house, and it had been almost untouched for 85 years. They say Thile paid a mint for it, but it's a stunningly beautiful instrument. Indicentally, Mike Marshall's Lloyd Loar Gibson was signed ("born") on the same day as Thile's.

I keep being drawn back to a little segment of this rendition; 2:15 - 2:22. I have to rewind back to focus on Mike’s backup chords that perfectly accompanies Chris’ technically marvellous picking, and the rewind back once again to focus on Chris to really pick up on all the little nuances that he fits in a tiny little bit of this tune. Both deserve to have my focus equally in that segment.

Beautiful how this tune takes on a new dimension at faster tempo in addition to being masterfully played

Two of the finest musicians on the planet. And as otherworldly as Chris Thile is, don't think for a second that Mike Marshall can't keep up with him. Those two are some glorious musicians.

@jbrad1211 I think you can find a Dudenbostel for around $30K, but not a Gibson Loar (Gibson F5s made between 1921 and 1924). Those will run you between $100k (for one with issues) up to the quarter million-dollar one that Chris bought. Kind of scary, when you think about it. I can't imagine being the guardian of such an instrument!
@wankatronic13 жыл бұрын
@gwoman6071 a mint and then some- the dealer who found Thile's Loar mandolin is a friend of a friend, and said he paid around a quarter of a million dollars for it. also said it's a mint example of a Loar mandolin, though.

@gwoman6071 Dudenbostel was taking orders for mandolins a while back- $25k for a brand new one. yikes. makes me glad I play the dobro- its rare to see one that sells for more than $10k, vintage or not. and you can get plenty of great sounding dobros for under $5k if you know where to look.
