So my boyfriend and I work at a petstore. Our favorite thing to tell people who insist on getting a fish for a tank too small, even after we educate them on minimum tank sizes, is to compare it to forcing a human to live in a closet. Yes. They would survive, as long as they’re fed. Let’s even say they’re waste is regularly removed too. But are they happy? Not enough space is not enough space. It really puts it into perspective for people.
@FishForThought

I used to use that analogy too, but I do believe it is a little bit different. Humans are just so intelligent that it'd cause a whole different level of insanity if kept only in a small space 100% of the time

Hey Chris i have used API stress coat when my loaches got out of the tank, and it helped restore their slime coat and reduce their stress because they add aloe in their formula, the nice thing about API being "watered down" is that it can be used in smaller containers with a greater margin of error, if you're hatching eggs and only need a little bit it helps to have a product that is less concentrated.
@888fluffy

@tonyalarcon1757 it had a ton of good reviews so I assume me and the others just got duds. I ordered it on Amazon but it was the same log/brand that major pet stores sell, unless it was a dupe? I'm not sure why anyone would bother making a knock off 10 dollar foam log but who knows. I'm forever grateful I put mine in an empty tank. If yours was bad , you'd know by the smell, so it's probably ok. My water smelled like chemicals and it was a little nauseating

I will have to admit, when I was a kid (I’m 58 now) I had a fish tank that every week my stepdad and me would clean out the whole tank. Removed all the fish, dumped all the water, cleaned all the (bright yellow) gravel through a colander. Then put it all back together. Back then I didn’t know what I was doing, didn’t have computers ! LOL But now as an adult I have a much different aquarium, thank goodness! 😊

I vaguely remember a similar experience. That is, I vaguely remember having an aquarium as a child, and vividly remember cleaning it that way once. That is my only clear recollection of that tank. I'm guessing the next thing that happened was that all the fish died and the tank was consigned to a dark corner of our basement.

Same here. I had a small ceramics pond when I was a kid. It was built for me because I didn't stop asking for one, and I did all I could to care for it. Every time I decided it was time to clean, I netted all the fish out and scrubbed every inch of the pond... With water and soap. I always felt happy doing that too, thinking I did the fish a favour. They last for a year but we do have a lot of casualties. I remember feeling sad, and thinking the water was too dirty I cleaned up even more ...

14:20 The only thing I avoid for a dechlorinator is if they contain something that reduce ammonia and nitrite. It might seem counterintuitive, but these chemicals starve the bacteria in the filter that is doing that job. Everytime there is a waterchange and these products are used, there is an ammonia spike once the product have converted all the ammonia it can, followed by a nitrite spike a few days to a week later. My filterbacteria have been doing this job flawlessly for over a decade in my current tanks, without ammonia or nitrite spikes or any sudden, unexplainable fish deaths. I guess if someone is doing frequent water changes, there will be no spikes, but I only do water changes every 2-4 weeks, without issues. Unmeasurable ammonia and nitrite and very low nitrate levels over the line, I only do water changes because I don't know what else might accumulate in the water over time.

100% agree with the sentiment that we should educate, not hate. Some experienced aquarists seem to forget that they were once beginners too, and probably made tons of mistakes. When I started this hobby at about 13 years old, I kept 2 fancy goldfish in a 5 gallon *cringe*. Miraculously, they did survive until I got a bigger tank, but that could've ended much differently. I think most people just aren't aware of the proper care guidelines for fish, or they're overwhelmed by the expenses of upgrading their setup. If we can provide people with resources to meet the fish's needs in a budget friendly way, we'll do a lot more good than if we were to just call someone a fish abuser.

I always put my fish in first. I put the fish in, and then the substrate, and then the hardscape, and then the plants, and then the birthday cake, and then some sparkly rocks which are colours not found in nature, and then I wash all the the materials in Clorox, and finally I put the chlorinated water straight in from the tap so it will be as fresh as possible. Doing it this way, I know my fish are digging around happily in the substrate for decades! No fishing out dead fish corpses or anything! As far as I can tell, they are still living quite happily underneath the substrate. I know that they are not unhappy because I never see them leaving the substrate to swim around. It's the perfect setup, except for the fact that the Clorox tends to kill the plants. But it's the fish that count, right?

As far as I know, "1 gallon/1 inch fish" (or what I used to see as 1 liter/1 cm fish) is not about how much space you're fish need. It's more like how much water you're fish "use" (for pooping, breathing, etc.). It's working fine with little fish, like up to 10 cm. But that calculation thing gets more and more inaccurate with bigger fish. So it's fine to use this to calculate your tetra school water load, but not okey to a monster fish tank.

fish math is a valid starting point. the problem is like you say, it's not just black and white, it's a starting point. meant to give you an estimate. you then need to consider other factors like the manner they swim, if they are a slow or still fish vrs a highly active fish, schooling, solo etc etc. It's not meant to be a complete picture, but a minimal picture to start then you adjust calculations based on fish type. Far more imporantly is the scape as well. heavily planted is always better and so on.

Aquariuim products? A big ol 5 gallon bucket from the hardware store to do water changes. Also a stainless steel doggie bucket (for aquariums only!), a gravel vac, and a kitchen dipper (the cup on a handle you'd use to dip water out of a bucket): so when you pour new water in the tank, you pour it into the dipper (on the surface), not directly into the plants and gravel and such stirring everything up. FTR might be my favorite aquarium accessory tho....

i generally try to stay away from a lot of fake decor, the brighter the colors the less likely i'll use it. not just because i personally think its ugly, that's my opinion, but MOST of those kinds of decors DO leach toxins into the water slowly poisoning the fish over time. some decors from places like walmart especially even if not bright are more likely to do this so i just avoid it all together. same with a lot of colorful gravel, its painted and a lot of that paint chips off over time and with some its not actually aquarium safe, but because its not bad enough to instantly kill your fish they don't bother to make it safe, just " eh good enough " kind of mentality which i don't agree with. some fake decors are fine, even bright ones, but imo better safe than sorry when its so hard to tell which are and aren't bad, i just avoid all of it and don't personally recommend it just because its not a chance worth taking. *shrug*

One of the pet stores I did my work experience in has very knowledgeable staff who bring in weird stuff. We had about ten half banded eels of different colours when I was there. They are very cute and funny but quite hard to look after as you have to make sure they have enough oxygen and that food falls down for them to catch, they only eat live and frozen. But they do get to 30-40cm depending on species. The staff told me they still only need about 200-250 litres since they move so little, unlike some other eel species that swim alot.

I use it in the first few days of new fish quarantine and if I have an injured fish and water changes aren't enough I will use it as a bath to help clean up mild infections, it's also great at ensuring my corydoras eggs don't get fungus on them. It's safe for most fish though not recommended for invertebrates like shrimp. (but also it will dye sillicone blue, there's always a down side!)

Favorite product is Aquarium Co-Op Easy Iron. Had my plants babies turning white because they had no chlorophyll in them. Had no idea that was a classic sign of iron deficiency. 😂 Now, my plants are wild and need trimming constantly.

As far as the inch per gallon rule, I’ve noticed how smaller, schooling fish can actually fit more per gallon. For example you could probably have like 25-30 neon tetras in a 20 gallon planter, because they swim so close together and prefer that proximity to each other. Meanwhile a big mean cichlid is gonna need a lot more space

8:01 I have those fish rn and ended up with 2 males and 1 female I suspect as they all appeared about the same age at purchase but the 'female' is Much fatter. They did fine in my 40, they are very territorial but didn't harm each other even when 1 was much smaller, but that means you need to make sure they all get food. In my 75 they're chasing seems more natural as it doesn't happen much so it seems fine. But the bottom is like a forest and there are many places for them to call home. They love meaty foods and mine will not touch anything that's not at least frozen but that's at least 80% of what I feed anyway so you may be able to get them on dry foods idk. But they absolutely LOVE digging in the sand so if you do get any Please have sand for them. They would leave fish alone, even ricefish fry as far as you can tell. They go nuts over small worms tho. Also they can be very personable. 1 guy has one that likes to sit in his hand and be pet, mine know me and will come up to me.

So I have a question. I've found a huge, tank sized jar. Like 10 gallon jar. Well 9 1/2. My son wants to turn it into an ecosphere. I'm worried about heat. Is there a way to increase the heat in the jar without opening it and could it support very small fish?

I can't really respond to the question of the week. I don't have a fish tank yet. I'm doing my research and figuring out what size of tank, where I'm going to place it in my house, what additional equipment I might need, etc... I'm pretty sure I want to do a soil base layer under the substrate and have live plants etc. I know I would like some shrimp, maybe cherry shrimp, maybe an amano or two. I like Chili Raspora, maybe a Betta in there. Probably at least 20 gallons, maybe more. I do live in Oregon on the coast so there is loads of interesting wood and stones to collect and add. I'm also been thinking about putting in a smallish backyard pond, which is a totally different beast. Love the content!

The simple fact that this tiktoker is familiar with all these plants yet fails to understand the incredibly basic idea that bettas don't belong in jars... "Do not underestimate the amount of space fish need" Preach! So many articles online, even by 'experts', claim that *10 gallons* is a good size for sooo many fish just because their small (even though some get like three inches or so) "Take everything off, and clean clean clean!" ... (adding to that, even though it's good that they have an actual tank for the fish... that is a TON of goldfish, a pleco that's not even fully grown, and a baby turtle. And they're getting rid of all the bacteria that tries to grow so that tank is probably more ammonia than it is water) "Not a fish abuser here" ...So you know what you're doing is considered fish abuse but do it anyways? I expected him to give an "update" version of them in a proper tank at first

6:40 my kids won 3 goldfish from the fair 3 yrs ago. Unfortunately two of them died, but one is still doing well. I did, and am still doing, research to know how to take care of it and the other two replacement goldfish we got. I actually just got a bigger tank for them! It's cycling as we speak. I definitely learned NOT to wash everything in the tank!

Funny story!! When I was little (like 13 years ago) my parents got me some goldies because I was always so interested in fishies when we went past pet stores. However no one in the pet stores ever told my mom how to properly take care of a tank and yk back then info on the internet wasn’t so abundant… so my mom would clean out the entire tank and scrub the algae off of the gravel and stones just like the people in the video. 😭 Fast-forward to 6 months ago when I finally decided to purchase a tank and start my own planted aquarium my mom went: ”Just so you know I ain’t cleaning that out every other week”. I had to sit her down and explain to her about the natural filtration cycle, small water changes and all the stuff out there: the fertilizers and water conditioners(the whole process). At first she was so skeptical and thought it was nearly impossible but after around a month and a half of only water changes and proper, minimal care with the water being crystal clear as always, she gave in and congratulated me on the great purchase and good decision.😆 Now I even catch her observing my neons swimming around the tank!😊

My favourite product in my fish tank is my fish. In the one which has Kame-san in it, my favourite is my turtle, Kame. Yeh, not very original. So kill me. At least it took a hair bit more than people who call their dog "Dog". Kame is a good boy, so leave him alone. He has pet guppies, otocinclus, and corys in his 40 gallon tank with him, and he hasn't made a move on one of them. He cares only about eating turtle pellets and Bug Bites, and burying himself in the sand. I guess my second favourite product is the fish tanks themselves, since none of the rest of it would really be possible without them. They aren't anything fancy like an ADA tank. Those are out of my budget. The ones I have are just rimless glass tanks which look decent when I remember to clean scrape the algae off of the glass. I also prize my canister filters. If you have a turtle, a canister filter is almost a "must have". It's the same thing with a turtle as with fish. Always cycle both filter and tank before adding turtle and fish. Those beneficial bacteria help break down turtle waste too, even if it's a big boy like Kame, who is about as big around as a desert plate.

I hate when people give correct advice but then blow it. He says "you will definitely kill the fish if you don't let the tank cycle" which isn't true at all, there's a whole school of (psycho) thought called "Fish-in cycling"; most likely your fish will not die, they will just suffer unduly. So then anyone who has done this, and thinks they are rright, sees this guys tips and thinks "Ha, what a moron, he is wrong. I know better, and I'm gonna keep it up"

I want to get and keep Brine Shrimp (aka sea monkeys / aqua dragons) in my 3 gallon tanks (just meant for the Brine Shrimp, nothing else), but I had to get fake "realistic looking" plants - unfortunately, the salt that the Brine Shrimp need will kill fresh water plants.. The only common plant that I have access to that really thrives and grows in the salt is algae, and that's great, because algae is a major food source for the Shrimp as it is a part of their diet. ☺

Rule of thumb about any Jar ecospheres. Never put anything bigger than then a fingernail in there, as the space allowed just... isn't there. For aquatic, safely can put snails, maybe a couple of shrimp but i'd say no to the shrimp. For solid scapes, anything bigger then a centipede is just going to make life miserable for the inhabitants. That and moss. Lots of moss...

Personally, I don't bother buying branded dechlorinators if my tanks are already cycled (mostly just buy them for the live bacteria). I use Sodium Thiosulfate instead since it's tons cheaper and lasts far longer than any branded dechlorinator products out there (it's the active ingredient in dechlorinators). It breaks down chlorine into chloride ions thus neutralizing them. There is a caveat though and that's that it breaks the chlorine-ammonia bond of chloramine, so it leaves behind ammonia. That's why it's important that the tank is already cycled.

My mother is working her way toward getting a stand and some materials to set up the 75 gallon tank weve got downstairs. I told her to wash the ever living hell out of it before using it, but not use heavy chemicals. But she was to move from the 25 gallon she has right now and switch to that 75 for her mollies. My plan was to help her find sources for good plants and such for her tank and aqua soil. The goal is to make fish heaven haha 😂 We also will need a divider for the middle due to the mixture of males and females 😭 She is realizing her mistake too late but yeah, she learned how fast mollies reproduce. If i get the chance ill share the comparisons of the old vs new tank.

Why spend so much on plants n fish just to put it in cheap dollar store jar? Buy the 5gallon+ tank first then buy everything else if it's too expensive at once I use a 27 gallon storage tub its black with yellow lid (i dont use the lid) it's very sturdy n at least has lots of room makes nice mini pond .
