In terms of straylining, how would you use a fixed spool reel without the baitfeeder option? Would you keep the bail arm open, or have no drag then tighten the drag when a fish has the bait?

+astonifyed When possible I would fish with the bail arm open and hold the line between your thumb and index finger. If you are using the rod holder (big bait out the back, sorting stuff out etc.) then go with the option of drag backed off. If you get a run with the drag backed off option, rather than tightening the drag before striking the fish, just grab the spool, set the hook and then proceed to tighten the drag whilst maintaining spool pressure with your hand. Hope that helps! Cheers.
