Fishing for Cod in Deep Water Off the Rocks | Sea Fishing UK

Conditions weren't great for a beach fishing session with because the water was clear and the swells & tides were tiny, so decided to opt for a deep water mark and chose Dunstanburgh Castle. It's a bit of hike but the sea fishing can be good and there's always a possibility of a few different species being caught, but my target was cod.

Yep, ticked that off and quite gappy if I don't get another. It has been unseasonably warm, although that doesn't seem to have put the fish off too much. We're still waiting for a decent NE storm to get things stirred up a bit over here, and a frost to get rid of the crabs!

I’ve never really fished with yellow tail but might be next weekend because of the tide size and that might be all that’s available. I bottom fish a rock mark near Pwllheli and some of the coves around there look awesome for your type of lure fishing

A lot of the worm beds have been dug out up here, so worms can hard to come by. I actually prefer using yellows over blacks, not as good against crab attack but give out loads of scent, just as long as tou can get them out before they pop. Ive fished a few marks down that way and you're right, the coves can be great with a lure, headlands are canny too.

My God you missed some bites Nathan, that walk must have tired you out? I never found that place very good which surprised me, lots of crabs and it's seal heaven. I was also put off when coming back in the dark one night and there was a sound of hooves and a herd of curious cattle surrounded me, they were a bit rough but luckily didn't knock me over. I laugh at your recordings as almost every time you move near the camera you get a bite don't you? Great as usual, you're a star.

Haha yeah I missed a few and they always seem to be when I'm doing something other than fishing- hopefully they were from smaller fish. Sounds a bit scary, I don't like walking through cattle during the day let alone at night. I tend to walk in from the Embleton side, means I miss the cattle and the walks a bit shorter, although the hill into the castle is a bit of killer. As always, thanks for watching David!!👍🎣

Great session, whiting are aggressive feeders and can strip your baits in minutes. You're lucky to catch that one. As Alex said, if you're buying your worms, it can cost a fortune dealing with Whiting and crabs at the same time.

Nice session. Incredible - I can't believe that is your first ever whiting, or sea pigeons as we call them. It has been like whiting soup here - some of them pushing 40cm so not tiny - makes it difficult to get through to the cod.

That's the impression I get from watching videos down on the south coast- like a plague! Funnily enough, I was out fishing last night and I got my 2nd one. We do get them up this way but mainly in or near the Tyne estuary, but rarely fish there.

Here in Danmark we catch some big cod/codling very close in and in shallow water....even fly-fishermen catch some Nice cod close in on mixed ground. Most big fish (over 3kg) are caught on lures day and night. Small cod 0.5 to 1kg) eat worms etc. Cod are active Hunters and can move fast...you might be surprized at what you can catch at a short 25m cast.

Congrats on the first whiting. Strange you think we could catch the same fish all over the UK. We get plagues of whiting in Wales, but yet I never even seen let alone caught a coalfish. If it wasn't for your channel they would be like some sort of mythical creature to me lol

Coalfish are like our dog fish, can be a pain but make a good blank saver. Apart from taking part in the Pembs Bass tournament this year, all of my Welsh fishing has been in North Wales. Got to admit that the fishing in South Wales does look great, shame it's an 8 hour drive for me!

Eyup Nathan. I don't know where everyone else is with their cold weather gear knowledge but I know I could do with some advice from someone who knows about clothing for keeping drier and warmer by the sea. I've been looking just recently and it's a mind boggling array of stuff. Where on Earth do I even start? Give me one fish and a star to see her by and that'll do for today however cold I am. You're in luck Dave, cold weather clothing is my forte! Basically anything that works well on a mountain will work well by the sea, we just need warmer mid/insulating layers because we're more static than mountaineers. Layering is king and you can't go wrong with a merino base layer, primaloft topped with pretex insulating layer and a Gore tex/ eVent outer waterproof and windproof shell. Paramo are also worth a look as an outer layer since theu are warmer than a gtx layer and still waterproof and can be washed easily. Wind is the sapper of warmth, so whatever you have as a shell needs to be windproof to give your insulating layer the best chance of keeping you warm. Hope this helps and tight lines 👍🎣

You can go through the castle gates but I park at Embleton and walk up the hill at the back of the castle. Not quite as far to walk than parking at Craster

I can't believe that's the first whiting you have ever caught but I assume its because you use big hooks and big baits for cod but still that's almost unbelievable. You must be spending a fortune on bait or do you dig it/pump it yourself? I fish 2 or 3 times a week, I use squid for almost all my fishing and I catch a lot of fish. I tend to put a whole squid on at distance or live bait a small whiting. My second rod is normally 2 hooks short to medium range with 2 smaller squid baits. A few days a ago I was catching codling and bass on the same session (yes the bass are still here) Maybe try a session using squid and see how you get on. I used to spend loads on worms and then I realised it was unnecessary and my catch rate didn't decrease. Just get decent quality squid and good bait presentation and it works well.

@@SlippyLimpets Hi, I sometimes use cart but not often, mostly I use squid on its own, sometimes mackerel and squid cocktails. I have full confidence in using squid for all my fishing - it catches everything from whiting, flatties, bass, cod, coal fish and Pollock. I'm near Scarborough North Yorkshire, but I tend to travel up to an hour and fish the surrounding area. Depending on what I've got planned I tend to use 1 or 2 bags of squid per session at £4 a bag. I keep it on ice and put left overs back in the freezer.

@@DavidTYork Hi, I have caught codling on cart and that's about it. I don't think its worth the extra money to be honest. I concentrate more on where I'm fishing and predicting where I think the fish will be rather than what I think is the best bait. I've used squid consistently for the last 3 years now and I've done well with it. Before that I always had to use worms and peeler every time. I'm not saying squid is a better bait - but it definitely works well for those of us that fish a lot and don't want to spend a fortune every trip. I would rather spend the saved money on lures and braid ect.

@@SlippyLimpets All fleets of pots are shot north & south with the tide, never across it. The small pellet (float) tells you which way the tide is flowing. A flooding tide travels south & the ebb travels north. The dan is always last in line so whichever side the dan is to the pellet, that's the way the tide is flowing. I've worked the pots for years mate.
