Slippy Limpets

Күн бұрын

I finally ignored the lure fishing tackle and headed to the beach fishing for cod, with the hope of landing a fish or two. Conditions weren't what I'd normally go out in and, according to my experience, the tides were all wrong for the beach I'd chosen to fish on.
Tackle-
Beach Rod- Any Fish Any Where GB FS Pro, 14ft, 120-200g
Reel- Penn Battle III 8000 LC
Braid- Daiwa J-Braid, 79lb
Rig- Pennel Paternoster
Bait- Yellow Tail Lug Worm
Tackle Trayz- bit.ly/Tackletrayz
Follow me on Instagram- bit.ly/slippyi...
Affiliate Links-
Waterhaul Sunglasses-
Cornish polarised sunglasses made from ghost fishing gear washed up on the shore- 15% off anything on the site- waterhaul.co/s...

I try to match the hatch and this beach has no mussel on it. I have used mussel but normally on rock marks. It's a great fixie, loads of cranking power for a fixed spool, perfect for the ground I fish but the the reel gave up early and I'm hoping it was just a glitch. Eyup Nathan. It looks like deepest darkest Northumberland is a place to be just now. I'm glad you got some decent fish - I might change my plans and put some bigger baited hooks on to see what happens. I saw a bloke bag a 10lb Bass just below Bangor Pier in just about ankle deep water last month. Alright then - eight feet. Ruddy fishing on the internet - it's torture! I'm going fishing soon and I'll sithi after. Dave.
@SlippyLimpets

Alreet Dave, it looks that way although the average size isn't what we're used to. Hopefully next session might show a slightly bigger fish. Aye, one thing I've learned is not to chase the bite, those online catch reports and videos are only good for that day, but at least they give a location to try- North Wales has some great fishing. I'm seeing what I can sort out for December but will get back to you soon.

Nice going to get your winter started, good to see a few around down your way in less than ideal conditions. One wee tip would be to stop using bait elastic on your blow lug. Cod baits in dirty winter conditions rely on scent trail,the more the merrier. You will be losing a huge amount of blood per bait by the time you are done with the elastic and it slows you down a bit which can cost fish if they are moving through in short bursts. A good check of fluid loss for any baits/presentation method is making them up over a white plastic container or sheet of newspaper if worms wrapped in it and seeing how much you lose. It will surprise you and it's a good way too see which baits/methods are fine for double patting and those that are best done straight before casting. It won't make much difference when there are plenty fish around but it can be the difference between a blank and a few fish or a big one on the hard nights.
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip Rab👍Loss of scent is why I don't pre bait rigs buy will skip the elastic next time out and see how u get on. Hope your bass season was canny!
@robertgallacher7214
@robertgallacher7214 2 жыл бұрын
@@SlippyLimpets It was ok apart from one to haunt the memory that straightened some hooks,lol. It's defo worth trying without elastic and even putting just the last one on from a baiting needle if you can get it right down the middle. Quick scent drop from the ones threaded on the hook, slow leak by water pressure from the one that came off baiting needle.

Thats a good catch from that beach, by God it was dark, and your reel is why most use multipliers for heavy fishing, in my humble opinion fixed spools generally are not up to the job on our coast.

nearly everyone on the north east coast uses fixed spools and braid for heavy ground fishing now
@davidoldboy5425
@davidoldboy5425 2 жыл бұрын
@@davedelaney4290 Yes I've noticed, I think they are wrong but just my opinion mate, use what you want. Nothing wrong off sandy beaches, but the strain on the bale arm and gearing too much on heavy ground. Not room to do it here but anyone with engineering knowledge would agree due to the way the forces are applied.
@davedelaney4290
@davedelaney4290 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidoldboy5425 fixed spools have come on loads in the last few years, i've been using them for heavy ground fishing for about 8 years now with no issues, agree some are not up to the job but some are more than capable and strong enough, i've actually trashed more multi's (usually drive shafts) fishing heavy ground than i have fixed spools, look for metal bodied reels and you wont go far wrong, too much flex in foot and rotor if not metal, i think nath has just been unlucky with his reel as penns are usually quite robust tho i wasn't a fan of the battle 3 for the type of fishing i used it for as i found it had too much flex in the foot and rotor with not being metal bodied.
@davidoldboy5425
@davidoldboy5425 2 жыл бұрын
@@davedelaney4290 That's interesting, I never trashed a multi but smashed two fixed spool, both funnily enough at the same spot, in 2 months once, put me off. I agree some of the modern reels are well made compared to the past, but they ain't cheap are they?
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
@David OldBoy54 @Dave Delaney, I used to fish with militias and braid but moved over to modern fixed spools for the ease of fishing. I get the point about multipliers being more robust, but non of the fixed spools I've knacked have been on the bail arm/foot, it's been the winding gear. This Penn has got some cranking power and, after seeing some of the huge fish they handle abroad, have no doubt they can handle our type of fishing. Think I've just been unlucky with this one🤞

Good grief Nat that Penn really let you down. For years I used the 525 mags from Penn and they are solid reels. I'm not sure if you're a multiplier Guy or not. Nice to see some autumn coddling showing up. Cool man.

@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
I used to be a multiplier guy but used Daiwa Saltist's, decided to try fixed spools and they're no where near as robust. Thankfully Penn's service has been as good as their multi's and had a replacement handle in 2 days

@@SlippyLimpets that's a good service. Have you ever used a 7ht from diawa? such a easy reel to set up and cast. Original 7ht that is.

No, never given it a go only the saltist and Slosh 30. I think using braid has more benefits than using a multi, hence the reason why I started on the fixies.

On the first cast did I see you wrap the line a couple of times around the casting cannon ?I've seen that or even thought of it but i think I may try it next time out. What would you say are the benifits of doing it please ?
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
I usually wrap it 3-4 times, mainly because the braid can still move freely through the cannon if wrapped once, so when casting all of the force generated is applied to the spool of the reel. Wrapping it a few times transfers some/most of that force to the cannon, hopefully saving my reel a bit of wear and maybe giving me an extra yard or two casting distance since the spools can sometimes slip during a cast with 7oz lead.

Aberdeenshire has some amazing fishing, from the rocks and the beach. I started out with a Ron Thompson Axellerator and a Daiwa Sealine 'slosh' 30 and it covered the beaches and rock marks well.

Whats the difference between a pulley and a patternosta?
@SlippyLimpets
@SlippyLimpets 2 жыл бұрын
A pulley has a sliding system that uses the weight of a fish to bring the lead in line with the main line to help stop it catching on structure during the retrieve. A paternoster has a fixed length of line to the lead so has the potential of snagging when retrieving a fish and therefore more chance of snagging. Pulley doesn't have as good bit detection as a paternoster. Hope this helps
