Your video brought back many great memories of fishing Yosemite for over 60 years. I am now a quadriplegic, so no more fly fishing. My biggest trout ever was a 7 1/2 pound brown trout taken from the Merced in the valley in around 1995. I'm not sure of the year, because we went 2 or 3 times a year. There was a huge submerged tree trunk in a bend in the river on its side, making a great place for it to hide. I wasted many years fishing, but rarely catching, using spinners. That changed when I watched two young military men with fly rigs get their limits in about an hour after I had spent a few hours using spinners unsuccessfully.

What flies are good out there? I'm 14 and just started fly fishing , would make my year if I could hook a big brown.
@harleyeckles

That was many years ago. i only remember I used floating line and flies. The flies I used had a little bit of red in the wing feathers. There was a store in Curry Village that had fly fishing equipment. One of the guys working in the store gave me good advice on which flies to purchase for the season and weather..they did work. He was very secretive about where HE fished. Although I caught the big brown trout near the upper part of the Merced in the valley, I caught the most fish at the west part of the valley.

Small panther martins are successful trout lures but they only catch the most aggressive fish and from personal experience you only get so many chances in a pool to fool one on a spinner before they loose interest. Flies and natural baits will keep them interested but in some cases a panther martin catches me the biggest trout of the day while other times it is a fly.

This sure brings back memories for me. I lived and worked there for 6 years and lived on the meadow and when I opened my front door Half Dome was my view. I used to fish all the time during the summer when I was there. When the road opens to the east side my favorite lake was Saddlebag and I always caught 10-30 every time. Catch and release unless someone from the valley asked me to bring them some. It’s only a few months window to fish the high country lakes and streams and I took full advantage of it. Thank you for sharing!!

Brings back great memories of when I lived in CA. In this video you called catching the three trout species the "trifecta". Next time you are in CA if you have time to hike into the John Muir Wilderness you can try your luck at what is called the "Grand Slam" of the Sierras (Rainbow, Brook, Brown, and Golden). I backpacked a LOT of miles in the John Muir and caught all 4 species, but never from the same creek or lake (although I know guys who were better fishermen than me that did). I don't miss much about CA but I do miss the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains. A true national treasure.

Spent a week camping and fly fishing in Yosemite a couple years ago and it was amazing. Caught 30 Brookes in several hours working Wolf Creek by the closed campground that shares its name. First day there I got a Yosemite grand slam, brownie, Brooke, rainbow and a bear that came up to me while I was fishing a little pool. Luckily he was on the other side of the small stream but he could smell all the fish on me from my great day. In the altitude you won't find much size but some of the most colorful trout. I am dreaming of when I can make it back.

i spent two weeks this summer in the yosemite backcountry. i hiked into the merced lake highcamp and base camped. from there you can do day hikes to washburn, babcock, and emeric lakes. the fishing is incredible there. tons of brooks in the lakes especially washburn lake which is the easiest to get too had the most fish and there are wild rainbows in the merced creek between washburn and merced lakes. you can access merced lake via several trail heads but i reccomend starting at tenaya lake and dropping down via echo canyon to merced and then exit via happy isles in yosemite. you can take a shuttle back to your car at tenaya lake.

I have packed into many of the lakes in Yosemite. The best was in an area called Pleasant Valley. It takes a good day of hard hiking to get there and there are several excellent lakes there. One on the top of a mountain has the remains of a WWII bomber scattered across the mountain and the lake did not show on my map. The fishing there was absolutely fantastic and I could catch 20--30 fish with no problem. One warning is that along the river and rocky outcrops there are many diamond back rattlers. The river has formed many bathside holes in the rocks and makes it very nice for a place to get cleaned up and soap awhile. The Touleme River also has some nice fish but mostly in the 6-10" size.

G'Day, Always enjoy your videos. Beautiful water. Such crystal clear water. Some of those large spotted rainbows were interesting. I've caught similar looking trout here in OZ and wondered if they have been rainbow/brown trout hybrids. Whatever trout get up to in the privacy of their own stream is their own business! Glad to see that you are free to get out and fish. Here in Victoria, OZ the streams are closed for trout fishing until early September and we have had another strict lockdown imposed on us--hopefully it will be lifted before the start of the new season. If not, I'll continue to enjoy your fishing. Thanks for that. Cheers, Steve.

Always amazing to see fish in YNP rivers/streams. Back in the early 90’s I watched fish and game walk the Merced upriver through the valley counting fish. Hundreds. Some of the back country streams had a limit of 11 per person, just needed a shiny hook with limit caught in 20 minutes. Mostly fryers however 20 miles in great eating.
