The fly fishing, for big rainbow trout, in this backcountry river is pretty incredible. We sight fished for and landed a bunch of solid trout. Fly fishing with a dry dropper rig did most of the work but we did get a couple nymphing as well.

The eels are attracted by the vibrations of the hooked fish's panic and thrashing about. They hang around after due to the smell and are still looking for the fish. The big eels are all girls and when they get big like that are in the 10-20 year age group. If you are a bit slow landing a fish (especially in the evening) they will grab it off your line. One of the fish you caught had a scar around the cloaca and is most probably where she was grabbed during spawning by an eel. A good trip thanks for sharing.

I was literally thinking the EXACT opposite! While some care was taken, a lot more can be done. For example, I don't think the fish appreciates being dragged up stream with the rod or being let go before they're fully recovered.

@@largewoollybugger This is certainly true what you write but if I compare this handling of fish demonstrated in the video and compare it to the terrible and disrespectful treatment of fish I have observed from other "sportsmen" during my long career as a fisherman, this certainly is a good start, in my opinion!

Such a very well maintained waterway. Allowing nature to course freely without encroachment to foul it up. Respects for those that leave no trespasses against everyone's stewardship. Those are some healthy fish. That first trout looked to be a 3 year old but got fast on plenty of good forage. Beautiful place to relax and enjoy in between the rush of the next fish on! 👍 cheers

Nice river and nice environment to fish in. You guys landed some lovely fish even if you missed a few. I've been fly fishing since 1988 and never had anyone spotting for me, though I often fish with friends. Very rarely a friend or another angler nets some of my bigger fish. It's just a different type of fishing here. Sometimes I'd fish within 20 meters up and down the river and catch fish there for hours. Rarely do I actually see the fish I'm about to catch. You guys look for fish and "hunt" for individual prey.
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
It's indeed different on many rivers here, especially in the south island but we do also have river that we fish without spotting the fish, especially in winter in the North Island. The sight fishing is much easier as a team effort as it's often impossible to see the fish once you get down to river level. It's definitely like hunting and results in catching bigger fish on average because the small ones are hard to see.

Hi Johan, thanks for the demonstration of handling the fish in the water and not in the air. I think that is the message we need to get out there as it’s not much point in putting the fish back for it to die because of our miss handling. Love that stretch of water and am glad to see those magnificent eels are still there. I could never understand why the pakeha are so scared of eels. Its not as if they were dangerous to us, not like fishing in Australia! Cheers mate. Harera
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
Indeed, Pawel raised a very good point about the handling and we are making a concerted effort to improve our own handlings skills too. We have a pretty good system for quick handling and releases now and will keep raising it in videos. I love those eels, they are awsome. Can't really understand why anyone would be scared of them. They could probably give you a bit if you stick a hand out carelessly but that would be on you. Lovely creatures. Tight lines.

Great video guys! Best 20 mins in my life! I think the background music is good and I see nothing wrong about it. Your river system is extremely different from the rivers here in PEI, Canada. Im also wondering what size and patterns of nymphs you were using? Good video guys! Keep it up!
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much, that's really good to hear. We generally fishing size 14 flies under a dropper and sometimes 12 or 16 on either side but rarely smaller or bigger. Personally I use mainly pheasant tail nymphs and hare and coppers in various weights from uweighted through to as heavy as a 3mm bead. Just depends on the depth of the water and how deep the fish are holding. These fish were a bit shy but if presented well they weren't fussy and would eat any pattern. In the South Island they can be easily spooked and fussy. Let me know if you need any more info.

We tend to swing streamers downstream on sinking or with skagit lines. So keep an eye out for some streamer content in future. At the moment it is big rainbow trout time with them running up from Lake Taupo to spawn like steelhead so do apologize for a bit of euro nymphing overload but I will have streamer stuff coming. Hey mate, with winter coming up, what are your favorite techniques for trout fishing, do you essentially just swap out the dry on a dry dropper rig for an indicator?
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
It does depend on what kind of water I am fishing. If it's one of the Rotorua or Taupo lake tributaries where the fish are running up in numbers only for spawning, I will fish that differently from now onward. I tend to nymph those rivers with tandem rigs, a heavy natural like a big hare and copper or a rubber legged stone fly pattern. The later it gets in the season the more likely I will go for an egg pattern as the point fly but early season, especially if the water is clear I will start with a small nymph on point. If there is any colour in the water I will go for an egg patter and a bright natural say an orange bead hare and copper. In winter the most important thing is getting down to the fish. They hold on the bottom and in fast strong currents it can take a very heavy fly or splitshot to get down to them. If you aren't bumping or hooking the bottom regularly you aren't deep enough. If the water is deep a longer leader really helps, 12 to 15ft to your first fly is good. Hope that makes sense. If I'm euro nymphing i just go heavier and deeper and my dropper is often either an egg pattern or squirmy worm. I use the cleadrift soft eggs a lot and have already had success with them on a recent trip to one of the Rotorua tribs. They wanted nothing but a 4mm tekapo orange cleardrift egg. While the normal streams and rivers are still open until the end of June I don't do anything different on those as they are resident fish and not so intent on the spawning thing. An orange bead fly can still work magic sometimes.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Awesome, I was talking to my friend and he mentioned the fish stop looking up in winter, though we both agreed we tend do hang up our boots and gaters for most of the winter, with the occasional spin on some of the Waikato spring creaks and waipa tributaries that allow it. We have been getting into fly fishing a bit more recently and were not really sure what we should try. So thanks for the detailed reply :)

We'll I would definitely not be hanging up my boots over winter. There is some fishing madness to be had in the Taupo rivers. All the ones on the easter side of the lake from June onward especially after it rains. Have a look at some of my videos from late last year and you will see what I mean. I had a few really good trips late last winter just before covid. Nymphing and euro nymphing both worked a treat

In this video, I was using the new streamer pro line from I Love Fly Fishing, but that was not what I should have been using here, which is why I didn't mention it. It still worked, but I was intending to test it on the Tongariro, not here. What I normally use is a Stone Creek Perfect Taper line. I tend to over line with a 7wt, so it will load better for shorter casts. I have also just bought an ILFF Performance line that I want to test out. I think it will be pretty good, but I'll only know once I use it.

@@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Thx mate. Actually I was referring to the kinda small hip pack / belt bag that you (I belive) uses at the at the beginning (apron 2:00 min) of the film. The one attached to the wading belt, wearing on side. I am unable to spot the label. Sorry for "nagging", but one must try to learn from the "pro´s". Thx again
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing

Ah ok I normally get asked about Pawel's fishpond one that's why I kinda assumed that may be the one. My one is actually a modified chestpack from which I cut the straps. It happend to have a suitable belt hole in the back where my wading belt could go through. Its since broken and I haven't been able to find it again. The shop now sells a new version that does not have the belt hole. Have not seen anything else similar again. I'm now using an OPST hip pack similar to Pawels but roll to so I can fit my camera in.

Hi, what do you wear as waders? A neoprene tights and then shorts over it? If so, what brand ect? Thanks!
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing Жыл бұрын
In summer I don't wear waders, just thermals under shorts with wading boots and neoprene wading socks or sometimes long quickdry pants instead of thermals. In winter or when it is cold I wear breathable waders. Simms, Patagonia, Orvis and Aquaz are all good brands with options for different budgets. Good affordable wading boots are harder to find. Wading boots wear down very quick with a lot of fishing. Simms, Orvis, Patagonia and Korkers are all known to make some good boots but they can be pricey. Hope that helps. Tight lines

Are you allowed to keep the fish or strictly catch an release? Jw
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing
@CrazyAboutFlyFishing 2 жыл бұрын
You are allowed to keep fish within the bag and size limits which vary from river to river. Most fly fishers tend to catch and release in backcountry rivers like this one due to the low numbers of large resident fish. I do keep fish regularly from rivers that have a lake based fish population. They tend to taste better and keeping them is sustainable. A fresh lake run fish can be really nice. I find these river fish often taste muddy. Hope that makes sense.
