You don't have to use backing with braid. Tie the braid on the spool with a modified uni knot. Then use your hand to turn the spool until you have 10 feet of line on the spool. Then the braid won't spin on the spool when you start reeling. I've done this many times with both baitcasters and spinning reels.

Hey man how's it going. I just shared this video with my coworker. Me my co-worker and a couple of my Buddy's we went on a 24 Mile fishing and camping kayak trip this weekend. My coworkers line got tangled up in a knot. Got a nice half an hour break of watching him fixing it. We were finally back to kayaking. I hope he learned something from it. But it was a good trip haven't kayaked in a long time. Felt good to get out the truck for a minute and not worry about getting call for a load. Happy Father's Day to you brother. Take it easy man.

@@southernsalt yes I did man it was a blast. The weather was nice hot but nice. It rain for like a 15 min to cool things down a little bit but we still kept kayaking. I caught a lot of bass and it was nice to sit in a different seat that was not filled with air for a change."LOL"

You are spot on about flouro on a spinning reel! I tried it once on my Shimano and I had an explosion birds nest. It was awful. I stripped that line off and spooled on Sufix 832 the next day and it was a night and day difference! BTW I've watched several of your videos and you are doing a fantastic job with your channel. I know it's a lot of work syncing multiple cameras and having to crank out content. Keep them coming!

This was great, thank you. I use a 4000 size spool for popping corks and bottom fishing applications, not excited to see the bill to fill it with 8 strand!

Yeah good 8 strand isn’t cheap but it’s definitely worth if you throw a lot of artificial lures.

Great vid. Something I might add....doe of the biggest downfalls for me with braid is the fact that when/if you backlash on a baitcaster, good luck picking that one out.
@southernsalt4 жыл бұрын
Very true. Braid is definitely a little harder to get the back lashes out of.

On most of my bass fishing set ups I use different sizes of fluorocarbon line. Your video brought up some good points. Main one that stuck out to me was casting difference may have to change a reel or two so I can try it out.

Still watching, but wanted to comment on the fluorocarbon line. Yes, terrible on a spinning reel and better underwater invisibility. The two other benefits of it are better abrasion resistance vs mono as well as for those reels that get a lot of sun time, UV has little effect on it. The worst characteristic it has is the inability to handle a really hard strike. It has less shock absorption and stretches less vs mono. But, that's another video as it affects more offshore fishing. And this video is inshore my friend! Great job!
@c0b1a694 жыл бұрын
and with the leader discussion, you covered part of it. ;)
@southernsalt4 жыл бұрын
Great points brother! I’ll be honest with you I never really gave fluorocarbon it’s due diligence because by the time I made the much needed swap to bait casters I was full on committed to braid for inshore fishing. Never really thought about the UV deterioration of the line but definitely something to consider. Thanks for all your support man!

I've been using spinning tackle with monofilament line since the 1950's. From then, until now, I've *never* seen a "wind knot" come off a spinning reel with monofilament line.

For bass go with 10 pound test. For crappie use 4pound test. I don’t feel that line color maters a whole lot

Another great video, I’m guilty of using the fluorocarbon line for a leader 😅 i also didn’t know the 8strand was thinner than the 4strand love the power pro

I did have a question about the leaders is there a certain time you want to use fluoro or mono leader or do you use fluoro all the time? I’ve heard mono floats and use it for topwater and fluoro sinks?
@southernsalt4 жыл бұрын
For me I always use flouro leaders unless I’m using top waters and in that case I just go straight braid to the lure.

I’ve been running 30 pound PP on my 40 series reel this past year and have caught tons of big freshwater fish. I used a 20 pound seagar leader. Heading onto the Florida canals in a few weeks. I ordered a fin nor LT40 and figure I’ll use the same size line set up for what ever bites. How much mon backing should I use? Wish I had a line counter.lol

I make sure to put several revolutions on the spool maybe 20-30 yards.

Nice video. What fishing line size do you prefer for Flounder?
@southernsalt4 жыл бұрын
Hey man! It really just depends on how I plan to target flounder. If I’m fishing marsh 10 pound is plenty but if I’m fishing bridges or docks 20 pound is more appropriate to pull the fish out from the structure.

Just picked up a new 2500 spinning reel for inshore in north FL. I got some 15 lb trilene 100% fluoro. You think I’ll have problems casting with it? Can you recommend a better line for 2500? Not trying to hunt monsters, don’t need it to be invisible with our dirty water, but still want some abrasion resistance. Thank you!
@southernsalt2 жыл бұрын
Don’t use flouro on a spinning reel. It has to much line memory. Use 10 pound braid.
@CRCFISHIN3 жыл бұрын
or with braid you can buy a penn and it comes standard with a superline spool. i run strait braid no backing. i use a flouro leader with a uni knot for abraision restistance and invisibility
@southernsalt3 жыл бұрын
Yeah some reels come with that but I’ve also heard of people using a little bit of electrical tape on the spool yo get the braid to grab but I still error on the side of caution and put backing on everything.
@rufinogonzalez60203 жыл бұрын
Would you say fifteen pound braid is considered light tackle
@MichaelGarcia-gd9gs3 жыл бұрын
No that’s considered pretty heavy tackle. Light tackle is considered 150 pound test and more hope that helps!
@ludwig63322 жыл бұрын
yeah I would say at the top of light , especially braid, always tougher in braid. 14-15 # braid is all around throw lures fresh or surf.

My baitcaster reel can put about 135 of 12 lb. Mono. How much of that 135 should I use for backing before braid? Should I use the same diameter braid as the mono? If I'm doing a carolina rig do I put the weight and bead on braid and then a swivel with fluorocarbon leader?
@southernsalt2 жыл бұрын
Yeas that’s how I would do the Carolina rig. I use 10 pound on all my backing about 30 feet or so then braid.

Make your video and keep us watching you!

@ETuss7132 жыл бұрын
Love your channel so please dont take this as a disrespectful argument... What evidence do you have fluro is invisible or less detected by fish in water over mono? I would say this is marketing. 8 would say the only benefit to fluro over mono is its not hygroscopic and less stretch. Otherwise they are the same underwater and fluro is less abrasion resistant.
@itzzjoeyson2 жыл бұрын
Instead of backing with mono you can also just put a little electrical tape on the reel before you spoil your braid.
