Braid does get line twist that can cause problems as well. In order to minimize twist I set the rod down and pull out 30-40 yards of line across my yard. Then I reel the line back in between my fingers. I do this before every trip and it really helps. I have no issues and sometimes my fishing partners are swearing up a storm about line tangles. Try it, you’ll like it.

If you're fishing in a boat, snip your terminal tackle off and trail your line behind the moving boat. I sometimes troll salmon with fairly heavy mono and line twist is a problem (Spinning tackle is so much easier for kids and women when battling a big King, but then you have to deal with line twist.)

More visible, great for fishing at night with a blacklight head lamp..can pull in 40lb rays & 30lb stripers no issues (a couple of rods have broken but line held). Yes braid is more sensitive and I can get two seasons out of it but I hate untangling it, it will cut you, it's tough on your line guides, and knots are less secure if you aren't very careful. And of course it is less resistant to abrasion. And then there is the sound..after a short time I get tired of hearing it..anyone else hate that sound?

OK first off good video and thank you for posting it. But I gotta say i'm in the other camp of not using braid (I know very unpopular opinion). Here's why for me. A. Wind Knots B. Spool knots. C. frays D. Knot Strength. I lost more lures in the 3 years i ran nothing but braid whether it was a slight knick I didn't see in the braid and I sent the lure sailing into the depths of the lake. The rock or metal (I fish alot of rock quarries) I didn't see the braid rub up against and all of a sudden there's nothing there (lures gone) I lost a couple rod tips to the braid wrapping around the top eye and me snapping the tip off (in 57 years I had never done that til braid) 99% of the time I am fishing shoreline and the heaviest line I use spinning rod wise is 12lb (State record bass is 10lbs our average fish is 2-3 lbs on a good day) I can work every bit of shoreline using various line weights and never need to "Bomb" a cast out there and if I do I drop down in line size to 6-8. My costs have completely nose dived since I am not going through so much braid. I get 1000 yd spools of Sufix as an example for 9.99 each. My braid averaged $15.00 per 150 yards. in the last 2 plus years of no braid I have lost 1 lure and that was because I tied to an eye on a lure that I saw that was knicked and went against my better judgement and tied on anyways. I do think braid has it's good points and uses but for me and my setups it's an uneeded cost. Also alot of the old wives tales about mono stretch and coils is recycled from 20+ years ago from when mono was pretty bad i'd have to admit. Mono and flouro have evolved as well with the years. Also you soak your mono before using it and closing the bail with your hand eliminates 90% of the issues people complain about in mono. and no need for leader tying most of the time. Thanks again and sorry for the long reply keep the videos coming!

Man that's wild. I've used 15lb power pro for multiple seasons, dragging it around rocks and pylons with barnacles and oysters on them. I've rarely had the line just get cut. As for wind knots, I found that happens far less often when you stay on the smaller size line per your setup ...IE: rod and reel want 10-20 lb braid, use the 10 and stay to the heavier side on lures. Similar to fly fishing, you need a higher contrast between the terminal tackle and the weight of the line, or the line doesn't get "pulled" through the air by the lure.

@Socalfisher8513 күн бұрын
Thank you for this video. I still use mono because I don't need a leader with mono (most of the time at least) and the stretch gives me the needed delay when setting the hook. And the stretch of mono keep me from tearing the hook off of soft-mouthed fish. Don't get me wrong, I use braid on my baitcasters, but I still use mono on some and on my spinning reels. To each his own.

Great information!! I have braid on most my spinning reels (besides my UL setup for trout). Alot of spinning reels now have braid ready spools so why not use it. Braid works really well for carp and catfishing on hair rigs as well because it sets the hook easier and doesn't require me to have the drag on the reels set super strong.
@mch.l.trecords9169 Жыл бұрын
I agree with the points in this video and I do a similar thing I use 30 lb test braid on all my spinning reels and just use different lb test leader lines. I see a lot of people advocate for 65 lb test braid all the way up 100 lb test braid for monster sized fish. But the reality is even for monster-sized fish you'll never need more than 30 lb test braid if you set your drag right. I know guys that have used 30 lb test braid to catch 200 lb sharks deep sea fishing just by adjusting their drag to 15 lb test. So anything over 30 lb test is overkill for any fish you'll ever catch ever but to each their own. Also I personally like to use reaction tackle 4 strand high vis green braided fishing line.

Heck I fish more stained water with a fairy wand and I’ll use 20 lb Camo braid without a leader. @@GFWoodchuck yes, in fact I did read what was said and tontobb does have a point. A bright green braided line won't work well in clear, almost translucent water, as it will in murky water. Personally I can get nearly 100 yard casts with a spinning reel using braid and my trick to achieving this is simple I use a very thin diameter braid no bigger than 30 lb braid ( 8 lb mono equivalent ). And large spinning reels along with very long rods of at least 8 ft long. And my formula for this is 3,000 size reels for 15 lb braid, 4000 size reels for 20 lb braid, and 6,000 size reels for 30 lb braid and a ton of backing. And the reason for these bigger reels and thinner braid is that the bigger reel will create less friction as the thinner braid comes off the spool allowing you to cast farther. And the longer rod will give you more leverage to whip your line out farther as well.

832 is a great line. Got a question on a new rod reel combo wanna build for lipless crank baits for walleye and possibly live bait jigging. just started fishing for them this year. I prefer a spinning combo and tend to fish small lakes in the fingerlakes. Got any suggestions?
@nathanquincefishing7122 Жыл бұрын
To be honest I don’t fish for walleye much but I imagine any 7 foot medium spinning rod with a 2500 size reel would work!

Braid has sawed through my tip eyes too many times. If its not sawing into the tip eye, it makes me think that person fishes only 3 times a year. I agree with you. Mono or Floro for sure. And I dont understand putting on 15 to 30lb. braid then putting on a 10lb leader. Braid also digs into its self on the spool, even on long stroke spools ""made for braid"". Ill never waste my $$$$ again.
@TojiZenin39566 ай бұрын
Definitely agree. Those of us who fish regularly knows braid cut thru the guides especially when you fight the big ones.

When I first read the title and it sounded like you were advocating for all braid, and only braid all the time, I thought you opened Pandora's Box! I thought you were opening yourself up for a lot of discussion. But, when you mentioned Fluorocarbon leaders, that made more sense. Having said that, when I first started using braid, it was without a leader of any sort. Something really crazy happened one Winter while I was jerk bait fishing. I had just bought my first Megabass jerk bait and told myself I wasn't losing it so, I used straight braid. For some reason, I've caught the majority of jerk bait fish on straight braid. Can you explain this? I think the action with no stretch makes for more prominent twitches.

Interesting I cannot explain it! Fish are weird sometimes!

But the fish can see the bright color braids I live in Fla and the fish will run from bright color braids even with a 10 ft leader. Once the Fla bass sees the line they know something is off and will not bite I have tried this before

Are you building your own rods now? I've been waiting since August on a north fork c602 x ray blank to start building my own. Supposedly its coming soon...supposedly. I need to pick up a couple mhx elite blanks to fill in the voids in my spinning gear.

Hey I just picked up a big spool of 10lb braid for fishing the Indian River Lagoon. I’ve tried a few different brands but really hard to know what it will really be like till trying myself. Sounds like you settled on the 832? Is it still your choice or have you tried anything else out of curiosity? First my neighbor gave me a rod and reel with nanofil but I don’t think you can get it anymore. I really liked that line and very thin don’t know what # test. Then had some 30lb braid for the beach but it wouldn’t cast far enough and don’t need that heavy anyways. Went to 20 pound spider wire regular and it worked pretty good getting fish but it’s starting to fray and the coating coming off it making me a little disappointed. I used a 10lb j-braid x4 and I could cast amazingly far with it but broke my reel in transport. So now I’m in with the reaction tackle 1500 yard spool that should last a long time and not too much money. Used 30lb and 20lb mono for leaders. No issues with the 30 lb but I think 20lb would get more bites but have to check it after catching a toothy guy. So I’ll try the 15# p-line floroclear next for a leader soon. This is part of the fun.

Tangles and wind knots ( and twist issues) are far worse on light braid than on nylon monofilament or fluorocarbon in my substantial experience.And once you've got a knot to untangle it's an absolute nightmare in braid but usually achievable with nylon.
@kevinbeaudean704 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Nathan. Do you go braid to leader on baitcasters? Seems the benefit would also be good for a pitching set-up. I do use braid to leader on my spinning reels but hate the weakness of connection knots and the knot banging the guides. All connection knots weaken the line test by 30%or more. That's alot when your talking 6 and 8lb test. I guess until someone comes up with something better that's the set-up. I had a good year with swim jigs, any tips to improve on my favorite technique would be appreciated. I cannot get bit on shad colored swim jigs only bluegill.

Just got a new pack of 15lb Hi vis yellow braid. Can’t wait to fish a wacky or floating worm. Good points on why braid is better than mono. My only issue is managing when braid gets wrapped around the rod tip or eyes.

Yea that happens sometimes!

If you fish a lot, braid will saw through the tip eye. Now you have to replace the tip eye on your nice rod you payed good money for.
