Awesome trip! Buddy you need to invest in a fish fighting belt. I was cringing in pain watching the placement and your struggle with the rod and fish! I did that one time! Hurt for a week down there! Consider bigger conventional reels like th3 Shimano TLD II 30. It's a 30 size wirh two speed gearing. Nor only do they hold more line, they crank in more line per turn. Just push to go to granny low gear to crank and winch the fish. I used to go fishing on the multi day charters from San Diego to Baja for yellow fin, yellow tail, albacore, etc. Use a thigh plate and a kidney belt to lower your rod butt and higher leverage to pull. The kidney belt has snaps to snap onto your reel so you don't lose your rear when you get tired and your hand slips. Offshore fishing guys use Calstar Grafighter or Seeker Black Steel rods. They are graphite glass blended with strong backbone, full Aftco roller guides, gimbaled butt to snap into your plate to lock the rod from twisting. You look like you're using a 8 footer. Try less than 7 for more leverage. You're off in the oil rigs. For tuna or AJs, you will need a stouter rod and stouter reel. You never know what you're going to get. Also not too safe to go fishing offshore by yourself. It's like scuba diving by yourself. Having a buddy is much safer.

I've never fished the Gulf but I've fished the Pacific. It's been my experience when around structure, jigging, or alive babe. It's best to fish one pole. However that changes if you are trolling. I think you would have had way better luck concentrating with just the one pole. Just a thought. Wish I was fishing with you. 🤜💥🤛

this is my experience as well- you can fish with two rods, try to squeeze in some jigging, but when you are on the fish, the second you drop that livebait, get ready to reel. BTW, how long of a drive is it to this rig from venice marina? About an hour?

If you can’t correctly identify the fish you shouldn’t keep it. You misidentified all but the one real snapper. Every angler is welcome to participate but on a level legal playing field. Also as a professional mariner, I highly recommend you get a personal locator beacon if you are going into the gulf in this boat. Please be safe and legal.

Not being a party pooper BUT I am willing to pass along info. I am new to saltwater myself. There is a LOT to learn. Those are red snapper you caught. Not sure what month you fished in but judging from the weather I would say you were out of season on those. Might want to read up next time. Red snapper have a VERY strict season. 😂 I hear the ticket is pretty large. You are also required by law to have a deflator on board to take care of the air bladder issue. (Yes I know they may die any way) I didn’t make the law.

@jeremypeterson73849 ай бұрын
not at all, I just went last weekend. the only downside is if they are unmanned platforms , they beep this extremely loud alarm every 45 seconds. it's a warning for ships to know there's a rig. but other than that when guys are working they love watching us catch em... honestly I think they get a lil jealous lolol
