Tristan I have similar taste in rod flex for the same reasons you mention. For me It takes more thought and effort to present flies how I want with stiffer rods. And keep fish on. Like you, I like to almost forget about the rod and just put the fly where I want. That makes a very enjoyable day for me anyways. I'm looking forward to possibly seeing you trying some of the newer shorter rods coming out now, that are aimed at tighter situations. It'll be a good few months + before my leg heals enough to wet a line, so my wife and I are vicariously fishing through you haha!! Thanks a ton for sharing with us all! Enjoy your day!

Tristan, you’ve been at this for a while now, and I for one would like to see how you’ve evolved in your overall approach to tenkara fishing. I know you used a Yonah pack at one point, then a vest - how do you carry your stuff now? And the lines, of course, including how you store them for carry. I’ve tried several different line spools and don’t like any of them, so I’m curious where you ended up. I enjoy your fishing videos so much; it’s time to go behind the scenes and show us what happens before you make the first cast of the day. Thanks for the many hours of entertainment you have given us; I’m sure I’m not the only one who looks forward to your Saturday videos!

Wow, these cutthroat were just beautiful, and that last one was a beast! I've been fishing with a spinning reel my entire life, even fishing for trout in Colorado as a kid. I remember catching cutthroat in the streams that feed into north fork reservoir, and thinking how beautiful they were compared to the rainbows. Watching your videos has made me want to try Tenkara, and maybe get back to Colorado again to fish for some trout. Cheers!

Hi Tristan. Great video again. Really enjoyed it. I hooked and landed a 15 inch smallmouth bass today with my Nissin Kawashi 360 after an epic fight. Those smallmouth's pull hard. The 2 Temu "temkara" rods arrived yesterday. They are marketed as "Bamboo" rods/ 46%carbon. The 270 model arrived broken.. The 360 model is like spaghetti.. LOL. Oh well. I also have a pretty stiff tenkara and I find that using a "tapered style" leader works way better on it than a level line. .45mm to .35mm to .30mm.

You should fish the upper Entiat the next time you're in WA. I fished it during the Plain 100 Endurance Race, beautiful creek with beautiful fish. Water so clear you could watch them rocket from the bottom of 8' deep pools to hit my fly. Talk about suspense!
@michaelcapurso

Amazing how much experiences/opinions vary. Small streams, especially tight small streams I prefer a somewhat stiff rod, helps landing larger fish and getting a solid hook set with little movement, even on small fish. A rod (foxfire) that is too soft in my opinion requires an exaggerated hook set, and could get you in trouble with vegetation. I also find very soft rods that are supposed to enhance the feeling of small fish do just the opposite. The rod is so soft that you never truly feel the fish as it doesn't bend enough to get to the backbone where the sensitivity transfers feel to the hand.

@@RequiosWoW My favorites are the Wasatch Darth Quattro 5:5 or 6:4. 6:4 if the water is really tight, and will mainly be bow & arrow casting. The other is the Dragontail Mizuchi if the water opens up in spots.

Fun! I love fishing small streams. I'm in W. WA so the Cutthroat that are in virtually every creek/river are some part of the population of Sea-run Cutts. Most go to sea, but they might just decide to remain resident, which keeps fishing fun 'cause you never know what you might run into The juvenile trout are almost identical to the adult form of the Westslope. For me though, I think the Rocky Mountain Spotted Cutthroat is the most gorgeous of the group. If you've never chased Redbands in the small creeks of NE OR, I highly recommend it.

I’ve fished a lot of those mountain creeks in Washington. I’ve never heard of brown trout being in any of them. There are some brookies, bulls and rainbows along with the cutties, but browns generally need more fertile streams to survive. And that 12 incher at the end there is an absolute hog for those type of streams from my experience.

The first time I went fishing in Washington the first fish I caught in a creek like you were fishing was a cutthroat. The rest were rainbows. When I compared the picture of the cutthroat I caught to the ones you were catching it was definitely a cutthroat. I thought it may have been a cuttbow.

I fish mainly warm water and the bluegill and bass both tend to bulldog for cover. I prefer softer, read 6:4, rods but could use something stiffer to play them with. I have a Nissin pro square two way that I Honestly worry about when the bass hit. It's held up nicely though every time!

All tenkara rods are robust enough for travel, IMO. And access to cheap spare parts is never a bad thing in general, but on a trip like this it doesn't matter so much because I have about a million rods with me.

I would be very interested in how you setup your level lines. In particular what size level line you prefer, the knots you like to use and If you use tippet rings what size? You could also include your opinion on level lines vs furled lines. In perfect conditions I prefer the casting feel of level lines but find the furled lines especially dragon tails Katana and Tachi furled lines perform better in windy conditions. As I’m sure you know in the western high country we rarely get a windless day and even the nice days can be filled with gusty winds out of nowhere so more and more I find myself going to the furled line just for its versatility.

Thinking seriosly about picking up the Foxfire or the Wildwater Shorty Zoom for a couple of tiny overgrown creeks . Probably will be using size 20 or 22 flies for very small bluegills .
