Hey Steve. Interesting concept. Now, without sponsorship backing, you would have to finish in the 10k range on very derby just to make a small profit at the end of the year. And making a profit and making a living are two different things. This shows why having a good stable of sponsorships is so important. Sometimes small, like owning a phenix boat and winning their at the end of a derby is so important. Also sharing accommodations would help cut cost. Slitting it 2,3 or 4 ways can make a big difference. It would be interesting to see what a low level, mid level and top level pro makes each season. Jacob Foust does his cost analysis at the end of each derby. But I do not believe he put in sponsorship dollars into his all out tournament spending/ cost. Now I know their sponsorship deals are a private matter, but it would still be interesting. To make a living without sponsors I believe you would have to top 10 every derby. Thats without even winning one. That would probably win you a AOY worth 100K and a Classic spot worth a Minimum of 10k I believe. Well good luck with that 😆 Tight lines. Once again hope you and your family are safe and doing well. 🙏 Regards, Steven.

Boat gas $300.00 per event ? That is one day running long distances during an event. A 90 mile run one way is a 350 - 400 dollar day with a second fill-up on the water. That's Plattsburgh- ticonderoga and back. On average, you will spend 750 - 1500 bucks per event. Some events might be around 2k. Tackle $ 50 bucks ? That's like 6 bags of sencos and a chatterbait. To fish as a pro it would take a minimum of 50k in tackle to get started. Your fist season as a pro you will get a discount on tackle but you still have to buy it. You also forgot Tolls and Boat ramp fees. Boat ramp fees here are now $25 Per day and tolls are up also. I've been told by most pros I've known personally it's 100k to fish the tour and 125k to do it right and not eat like shit or cut corners. This is ridiculous and it's also why I say let's open the field up to 200 guys so it can be profitable. Double the guys = double the payouts. But the traveling "pros" are scared to fish against the best local sticks. So it's kept as a private club for millionaires.

In 2005 I won the Federation National Championship and with that came a thing called Fishing a Dream. I qualified for the Elites all entry fees paid, got a retainer for expenses and the use of a wrapped boat and truck for a year. Essential I qualified to fish the 11 Elite events for free. At the time I had young kids and my wife didn’t work so our income and insurance were from my NJ construction job. I chose to keep the substantial winnings from the National, Classic and Bush Shootout and not fish. ESPN owned BASS at the time and I tried to negotiate another 100K to do the deal, lol. Nightmares are dreams too.

Most major sports leagues, like the NFL or NBA, do not require athletes to pay to participate. Removing entry fees would further legitimize bass fishing as a professional sport. 2. Financial Burden: Entry fees for the Elite Series are steep (around $40,000 annually), creating a significant financial barrier, especially for up-and-coming anglers who may struggle with sponsorships. 3. Growth of the Sport: By reducing the financial strain on anglers, more people may be encouraged to pursue a professional bass fishing career, promoting inclusivity and expanding the talent pool. 4. Sponsorship-Driven Model: As a top-tier league, the Bassmaster Elite Series could shift towards a model where sponsors and broadcasting deals cover costs, similar to other sports leagues.

I think you underestimated quite a lot. A 2500 GMC diesel is 85k, assume you put 35 down, 50k at 4% for 60 months is a $920 payment. I think the expenses are probably in the 85-90k range. If that’s the case you need to earn a minimum of 200k per year between winnings and sponsors dollars to survive out there for any length of time. At that rate you’re making 115k. You better have a spouse that has a decent job with insurance too because there might be some LEAN years otherwise.

We must not forget, these Elite anglers want to compete in this club at any cost. Each angler has the dream to one day hoist above their head a big Blue BASS trophy at either a season event or the Classic. These Elite anglers will spend anything for this one in a life time opportunity. I personally don’t care about all the difficulties these Elite anglers face. These Elite anglers are chasing their dreams. When a mountain climber travels to Nepal to climb Mount Everest, the expenses and time invested is large. There is no monetary return. The sad thing about this is it just proves for the most part this is a rich mans game. I know some of the guys, very few, can pull this off with just winnings but for the rest you better have some damn good sponsors or you just have a lot of money and you can pay it out of your pocket. For a league to be able to pay its anglers without an entry fee it would take a pretty penny. I did a work sheet on a league with 50 anglers once and it was interesting to see what it would take. I won't get into all the specifics cause I would be writing a book here but the jest of it would be every angler would get a salary with ways of getting bonuses and raises. After the plan was made I came out with a figure of $8 million dollars. That's just for the anglers, that's not for operational cost of the league. Sounds like a lot but when you think about it that is pay for one year for one half decent NFL player.

You're analysis is spot on. If BASS (or MLF) was truly a professional tour 2 things would be different. 1. There would be no entry fee. Professionals don't play for their own money (football, baseball, golf, tennis, bowling, et. al.). 2. Anybody who is in "the major leagues" and is playing for miney (PGA. tennis, etc.) has contracts with sponsors that more than pay their traveling expenses. Bass fishing is where golf was in the 50's and tennis in the 60's. Guys couldn't make a living just on tournament winnings. Hopefully some organization will find away to convince sponsors it is worth the money for the sponsor to pay the entire purse (plus some for the organization). Until then, bass fishing is not truly a "professional sport."

Your tackle estimates are way to high. You probably have all the tackle you'll need already. All you need on Lake St. Clair for example is a spinning rod spooled with 20 pound braid, some drop shot weights, some leader line, and some drop shot baits like a flat worm or Z-Too. You most likely already have all that or something that will work. If you have some Jigs, Chatterbaits, Spinnerbaits,Senkos, Crankbaits, hooks, sinkers, baitcasrters, spinning rods, a spool of braid, mono, and flurocarbon, and last but not least FFS you should be able to catch fish anywhere. Forget about buying the baits that the others are using. You have more success fish the way that works for you. And remeber a bass is a bass is a bass.

Anglers are now starting to preach this. I can only believe it was highly discouraged in the past.... This sport is a money pit. Always has been. There's only an opportunity for a few to really make $ without sponsorships, or having other sources of income, or being independently wealthy. If you fished the Elite trail (Any trail) and cashed a check in every tourney.... you would be well within the classic cut, possible TV footage and pod cast invites (hint)… and would be living your life at or below the poverty level without any top 15 finishes. Think about that... this could be broken down in many categories. That said... getting ready to leave to gas up the boat and truck to pre-fish for a weekend tourney.

You mentioned Jacob Foutz. He can fish, but he needs to brush up on his people skills. He lacks there for sure.

I can not come up with any good reason to become a tournament angler, regardless of where you live, Tournament anglers hurt Sport fishing for Sportsmen,

You could use a car to haul a kayak. 😂

Yes you can. Paddling a kayak against the pros with engines might make a fun tournament. Cheers and thank you!!

Are the Elites elite? Yes! Are they the best fishermen in the world? No! It’s like snow skiing or tennis, it is an exclusive sport that only a select few are able to participate. A professional fisherman has to either be rich or willing to take a huge financial chance. Most really good fishermen I know probably could compete but have jobs, families, responsibilities, etc. that prohibit them from participating. I’m not hating, I enjoy the elites and realize many of them have sacrificed a lot to chance the dream. It’s just not feasible for most people.

Can you deduct all of this on your taxes if you're a bonified "Pro Bass Fisherman?" What steps do you have to take to prove that you're a "Pro Fisherman" on your tax filings? One of the reasons I decided NOT to go full time into a KZbin content creator of fishing related videos was because I knew that if I did this, I would grow to hate fishing. I think I'd grow to hate bass fishing if were to become a "Pro Bass Fisherman." Not that I could ever do that. It's the fact that I can't go fishing any time I want to that makes me love fishing. This video gave a roundabout explanation about why we periodically hear about those "Pro Bass Fishermen" that get caught cheating. If the love of money is the root of all evil, then the hatred of paying bills must be Evil's nagging wife.

I believe you can. It is like being self employed. I mean really most people that work factory, construction, transportation jobs have that ability to write off portions of their expenses. Now guides can for sure. I have buddies that are guides and they do in fact write off costs. I would like to see if this what they do as pro's and to what extent.

Just be glad you don’t have to travel to Commiefornia where I live because your expenses would be at least double. The good news is you only have to be here a week😂

Don’t you have to MAKE money at fishing to call yourself a “professional”? Otherwise, you’re just paying for a stress-filled fishing adventure.

Risky choice to be a pro angler. Add in insurance and saving for retirement yikes. Pro bass tournaments need to add revenue streams to make it like a true pro sport where you get paid to play not pay to play.
