Fishing the Gorgeous Gros Ventre River, Wyoming

The Gros Ventre River is an amazingly scenic tributary to Wyoming's Snake River. It flows thru large tracks of public land and has a good population of cutthroat trout, some of which grow large. There are sections that have easy access and other sections that can only be reached with a long drive over a rough road and beyond that are even more remote reaches seldom fished by anyone.

That is cool that you found a place remote enough (by the Cow Creek trailhead) where you were able to have success with spinners. But I take it that you would recommend fly fishing almost everywhere else in that general area? Like in most of the snake river watershed?

Yes. Because of the pressure and education of the fish flies imitating the local bugs are best.

Nice video! I drive a somewhat high-clearance 2016 Nissan Rogue. It's a mid-size SUV. Do you think that would be good enough to get upstream of Crystal Creek Campground?

I don't want to make that call, but I will say that any vehicle will have to be driven with skill. It is good to have a camera on the back of the vehicle so you can back out in case you decide it is too dangerous.

Just fished this river but went up the road ways and hiked down to the river. Were these more easily accessible closer to Jackson/Kelly or up more?

The film starts downstream and gradually progresses upstream.

The Gros Ventre is clearly a river that rewards the angler's effort. The fish populations are the same per mile above Crystal Creek as they are down below Lower Slide Lake. However, upstream has 1/3 to 1/4 the water volume and the fish see much less fishing pressure high up. Therefore, the fishing is much more productive the higher upstream you go.

In the lower section with the deeper water I was wearing Cabelas waist high breathable stocking foot waders. In the upper section with the shallower water and 4 mile hike I opted for the Cabelas stocking foot hip waders, non-breathable, and unfortunately they recently stopped making that type.
