Great session. A couple of good feeds there. Whiting are one of the best but the Flathead beats it in my opinion. Love flathead. When the weather is settled I take my boat out about 3 miles in the same area as you were and there is a great spot for flathead. Just have to pick through the small one that go back. Also leave the big females behind. 35 - 40cm are the best tasting anyway.

Hi David thanks for sharing your knowledge and insights regarding fishing. Really beneficial to compare your techniques with little bit that I know about fishing,while watching your videos how catch beach worms I will definitely try master technique here by us in South Africa. What I wanted ask you regarding the worms;"here by us they call them wonder worms"dont know if you have ever heard about them and are they same species? Just waiting for the lockdown to ease as soon as I manage pull my first worm will definitely let you know,thanks very much for being so unselfish by sharing your valuable skills with everyone.Regards Roderick Wakefield

Hi Roderick, thank you for your comment thats nice to hear and I'm more than happy to share fishy things I have learnt over the years. My fishing has slowed down a lot especially through summer time, I breed and supply maggots for fishing bait they are a very good bait for smaller fish, lots of fish eat them. The worms you mention I have never heard of them before I have seen a species of worm over in South Africa on another channel called the moon worm it had a head just like the worm I'm catching but was much shorter only 20cm-30cm and that fellow was pumping them as well as other worms. I'm sure in the comment he said the moon worm responded to splashing the smell of pilchards around, i can attract the worms i catch over hear doing the same thing. Its all very interesting and looking forward to hear what you can catch down on your beach, try catching like myself also a bait pump if necessary. All the best Roderick....Cheers David

any thoughts on flathead fishing mate..locations, baits etc
@davidsheldonfishing97265 жыл бұрын
Hi Mark. Thoughts on flathead, firstly very much a ambush predator lying in wait for dinner and capable of great speed when striking, so when chasing flathead it is good to move around targeting edges of sand bars low tide and on top at high, also sandy locations around rocks and ribbon weed and at the back of them little rips you can find along our non surf beaches. A bait moved more often then not works a treat the sinker kicking up a bit of sand attracts there attention. Bait like small strip of squid or small strip of mullet and beach worm with your hook of choice maybe size 1 or 2 fished with a running sinker rig 12lb trace line casted around likely looking areas or start one end of a beach and start walking and casting. Also as you know there are heaps of lures to choose from. Flathead can be found just about any where around our coastline. in this video I'm near Normanville, I have caught quite a few at Maslins beach from the car park down to the non nudist end also try South Port, Port Willunga, O'sullivans Beach, Sellics Beach and lots of other places. burley also works well for flathead, I have caught quit a few fishing for other fish on a few different baits. Hope thats helpfull and I haven't gone on too much.

Hi Bob, these lovely whiting are over near Normanville, I shall be doing some more whiting fishing after Christmas when able with my new camera, the picture quality is very nice. Yellowfin Whiting use to be very plentiful all along that coast line I could zip out catch a couple of worms and more times than not always catch a feed of them, but now it is a lot harder. Fisheries are starting to realise that fish stocks are depleting so there is hope for the future i hope.

Hi Bryan, the rod I'm using is a called a flick stick fast tapered fine tip and around 9 and a half feet long 1 piece, I have two I got them around 1983 and they are Awesome . My son in law bought a Daiwa sea jigger 10 feet long 4 to 8kg 2 piece and it is very close to my rod and very nice you might like to check out one of them. All the best rod hunting Bryan Cheers David

Thanks for that David, I just bought a 3.6m 3 piece Diawa Surf 4 to 6 kg, but yours seems to have that fine tip that really makes strikes to be easily seen/ felt and even though my new one is ok I just wish it was a bit lighter in the tip. The more I fish the lighter I’m going with rods/ line etc. Love your vids, easy to watch. Take care and good fishing.

@davidsheldonfishing97263 жыл бұрын
@@phillipja2010 yes thats a good thing to do some pre burley prior to fishing and over time it will work a treat, these spots where I use to always catch a feed of whiting are loaded with bass yabbies, there are still plenty of mullet and tommies, garfish also some flathead but for the last few years the whiting have been very scarce a friend of mine who can't catch the beach worms gave up buying them for whiting because most of the time there was no whiting to catch. due to over professional fishing netting, fisheries miss management I think, something shall have to be done about it soon. when I get chance to have a fish I do hope I can see some also catch a couple.... Good fishing to you too Phillip...Cheers mate.

@grapet4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. Hoping to head there next weekend. Two newbie questions: why not 'dispatch' the fish when caught instead of dropping into your bag still alive? and I watched you letting some line out of your reel as the fish got closer before you eventually landed then. Reason?
@grapet4 жыл бұрын
And, what about the run out tide?
@davidsheldonfishing97264 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter I was a bit slack not dispatching my fish that day I normally do, I think the excitement of actually catching a few whiting got the better of me because they are getting quite rare and Pirsa and fisheries don't seem to be concerned. I was pulling line of my drag to adjust the length of line as I pulled the fish in towards me while lifting my fishing rod so I could get hold of the fish, and yes the run out is good too. hope you can catch a few whiting, there are mullet showing up now and still garfish around.

What other sort of bait can you use
@davidsheldonfishing97264 жыл бұрын
Hi Jessica, for the yellowfin whiting which can be very fussy the best other bait would be Bass yabbies, I have a video showing how to pump them, also seaweed worms found underneath rotting sea weed at the top of beaches and other marine worms. One day I hopefully will do a video about them. cockles are also ok they will catch a lot of fish and tenderised squid used in small pieces can also be good. Flathead will eat everything mentioned above and fish fillet, white bait, pilchard, pilchard fillet also lures. Moving your bait regularly tempts fish to bite and don't forget the burley I have a video about making burley.Good fishing and hope that helps Jessica......David

Gday mate thank you. The last 2 to 3 summers have been very poor down my way for yellowfin whiting fishing, 'very sad' but this year have showed up in medium numbers 'happy'. I think fishing pressure has been taking its toll. Maybe your yellowfins are suffering the same fate. I'me south of Adelaide the Yellowfin whiting down my way generally hang around till late April maybe some May and a place near home has a few during winter. @@davidsheldonfishing9726 Hi CJ, just like to point out that the yellowfin whiting in SA are a different species to the sand whiting of the east coast, and whilst very similar there are some differences so what may be working for you over Sydney way might not necessarily be working here. For example here there aren't really any true estuary systems, the whiting are caught predominately on low energy beach flats (lots of shallow coastal waters).
