Great info! I've never seen those before. I checked out conservation site here in the Midwest & we do have them around. The color of the fish AYO caught, per the conservation page, says "spawning coloration".

You have found the secret. Small creeks and streams require light line, small baits and light action spinning tackle. I love wade fishing and never used anything heavier than 6lb test mono, 5'-6" - 6"6" light or ultra light rods and small soft plastic craws, Zoom tiny brush hogs, and Zoom small curly tail worms. Green Pumpkin, Watermelon/Red flake and June Bug. 3" or 4" grubs are a great choice as well. Take a 2" mini tube jig and put a 2" grub or craw trailer behind it. Smallmouth will crush it. In fact, everything in the creek will smoke it.
