The Daiwa Presso 4-piece Travel Ultralight is a fantastic rod which I have been using for quite a while now. I have hooked and landed tons of fish (tiny, big, and everything in between) so I wanted to document my thoughts on this rod in a video.

The main thing I like about the Daiwa Presso Travel Ultralight is how well it fishes for being a 4-piece rod. When you fish with it, it is hard to notice that it isn't a standard one-piece rod. It is light, sensitive, and comfortable to fish with yet you get the versatility of being able to take it with you wherever you go.

Quick tip for multi piece rod assembly. They often don't have markers to align the rod. Put it together, use a paint marker and draw a colored dot to mark alignment

If you don't want to ruin your rod with a marker, use a sticker a small sticker is good. The sticker is good for just in case you don't like the rod and want to resell.

I have been looking replace it but other than Eagle Claw nothing is written on it. But now thanks to you I will try to find one of those daiwa's. Thank you for the video and the heads up on the rod.

Thought I recognized that lake! My dad took me there when I was like 10 years old and we caught 2 14 inch yellow perch somewhere like a few hundred feet south of where you're standing, which still holds the record for the largest perch I've ever caught to date! Ahh the memories. On another note, if you find yourself in the area in April (or around there), try bringing your canoe/yak out on the southern most launch. If memory serves correctly, straight out and to the left slightly there is a fairly deep (8 ft?) area with a bunch of weeds and lily pads sprouting, you can kind of see if on Google Maps if you look close enough. Throw some minnows on a bobber in there a few feet down and you can catch yourself a bunch of pretty good sized pike really fast. You'll likely find that you're the only one out there as well. The park gets crowded in the summer months, but in early/mid spring it's empty as can be.

Man I know what you mean by being cold cuz I froze my toes off for last week. My toes were so Frozen in my flip-flops cuz I had to stand outside for a half an hour trying to put fuel in my truck 🚛 early in the morning in 32 Degree temperatures. I had to put the heat on the floor to keep my toes warm. I wish my toes wasn't so wide & being straight across. Maybe I could find a shoe to wear for the winter so I clearly understand about the coldness. But I'm glad you still got out there and fish even though it's cold & you still got some fish so that made a good cold day.

I have this rod and really enjoy it. I am not sure why bait fisherman think the rod has to be single or at most two piece to have performance. Almost all of Flyfishing rods are multiple piece, 4 to 6 piece, and are higher performance then spinning rod. Diawa did a very good job with this rod.

I liked my first so much I just received my second of the 6'6" version. I normally go with two-piece rods, but I like the action of this in four pieces so much with the balance paired with a Lew's TLC2000 that I went for two. I'd rate it as a light more than an ultralight - but that's fine with 8# braid with a 6# fluro. leader. One for jigs and one with a swivel for spinners/micro plugs and I figure I'll be in kayak heaven for smallmouth and perch.

Thinking about getting this rod in a 6' UL...any preference on it vs the Daiwa Procyon 5'6" UL. Want something that makes fishing Bluegill and small bass more fun. I prefer using braid to leader and heard you say in Procyon video that you probably shouldn't use braid with that rod...just curious. Also, any reel pairing suggestion you like lately for either rod?
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 4 күн бұрын
The Procyon is so much faster than this stick. This is more versatile and will work well for a variety of lures/species, whereas the Procyon will primarily be a jig rod. I would go with a size 1000 Daiwa or Shimano reel.

Since I live in the UK all of my fishing in the USA is done on vacation. So all of my kit has to be small enough to fit into a suitcase with clothes etc and light enough not to cause weight issues. Everything is a compromise and each item is considered by size, weight, how essential it is and whether my good lady will go nuts when she sees that I've only brought fishing gear and no 'nice' clothes! @FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
If you go spinmatic, definitely go on the shorter side because the rod gets a little noodly and too thick in the longer lengths. I hope you can find a Presso because it is a dynamite rod. I liked the 5'6 but a 6' would be great too.

I suggest you look at the reel's weight also. I find that proper balance is crucial to my experience. I put a 500 on a 6-6 rod, and the combo was tip-heavy. That same 500 on a different rod was superb. There is also a fair bit of variance among reel manufacturers when it comes to assigning numbers to various reel models.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
Good points! I tend to like the 1000 because of the shallower spool that is wider. I find that smaller spools lead to a lot more line issues so I’ve been very pleased with 1000. Additionally, they seem to balance most of my rods very comfortably. Been meaning to try a few 500 reels though.

I have owned a 13 Defy Silver 5-6 for about a month. Could not be happier. It is very light and sensitive, with great "feel" in my hands, and has surprising backbone for an ultralight. The Defy and my Celilo 6-6 were purchased based largely on Ethan's reviews. I'm new to UL, but have fished light tackle for a very long time. I found Ethan's reviews of those two rods to be very informative, and in my experience so far, quite accurate.

Hey man I check you site and you don’t have that tackle box on there. Is it for sell?

That thing caught my eye too the first time I saw it. I think it is simply a third-party fly box with a Mule sticker on it. Looks like a great way to store them, though.
@FishAnything

Yeah it is just a cheap fly box from Cabelas that I slapped a sticker on. I would like to sell a box someday but have yet to figure out the best design (or have enough money to invest into the project).

Hi :) I recently bought a 6' Daiwa Presso rod, can u recommend me a good reel for it ? (I was thinking about Daiwa Revros LT 1000 or Daiwa Legalis 1000)

I am debating on getting the 7 foot or 6' 6' 4 piece version. The only thing I see is that I notice a few people saying that it is stiff and has a lot of backbone for a ultralight. Have you tried these sizes or have you noticed a difference in backbone from travel rod to 2 piece rod.
@FishAnything
@FishAnything 3 жыл бұрын
I used to have the 2pc 7-foot model and I didn't particularly like it. I would personally go for the 6'6 4pc out of those two options!

I have an upcoming vacation to yellowstone and need a travel rod.. I'm having a hard time deciding since I can only bring one... I just wanna do some trout fishing and have something that can fit in my hiking pack.. Should I go ultralight or light? I keep getting conflicting recommendations from buddy's lol
@FishAnything
@FishAnything Жыл бұрын
I would say it depends on the size of the fish you think you'll be catching. If the trout are 8-12" or so, the UL will be perfect. But if you think there is a chance of catching more fish in the 15-18" range, you might want to step it up to a L.
@jtmarshall

@Fish Anything I ended up grabbing a 5 piece diawa carbon case kit in 5 foot 6 light.. I might grab a ultralight presso too.. I got 1.5 months of fishing before my vacation so it'll give me time to try both out..
